2 Mentors Mentors are an important factor in the success of a student taking an online AP Course. FC BOCES is developing a list of district approved, potential mentors. Are there administrators, teachers, or professionals in your district who may be interested? Please contact Fremont County BOCES and let us know if there are. In-School Mentors a Key Component A pioneer in online learning, Apex Learning was the first to develop a distance learning model that linked the student to both an online teacher and an in-school mentor. Our program is also specifically designed to foster communication among the teacher and the student, the student and the mentor, and very critically, between the mentor and the online teacher. With six years experience working with schools in developing effective online learning programs, we have determined the best mentor is a teacher or administrator in the student's own school. An in-school mentor can see the student during the school day and meet with him or her regularly face-to-face. As a member of the school staff, the in-school mentor is in the best position to help the students solve problems. Sometimes mentors are needed to handle logistical matters such as getting access to school computers, arranging course schedules, or securing needed books or materials. Sometimes mentors play a critical role in understanding personal issues students are facing and work collaboratively with the online teacher to adapt the online course program so a specially challenged student can succeed. Because the mentor role is an important component of our distance learning model, Apex Learning has a number of programs in place that support mentor success and involvement FC BOCES and Apex will provide orientation and training for prospective mentors. Apex will facilitate collaboration between the Apex teacher, student and mentor.
3 Curriculum Time-Tested Pedagogical Principles Comprehensive, Standards Based Instructional Content Apex Learning is committed to publishing high quality online instructional content to meet the academic requirements of secondary education in the core subjects - math, science, English, social studies, and world languages - and in Advanced Placement*. Our online courses are based on time-tested pedagogical principles. The overall model is straightforward: a) create an anticipatory set for the student; b) provide focused instruction using varied teaching strategies such as guided-inquiry and/or direct instruction; c) engage students in practice and application exercises in which students clarify and deepen conceptual understanding and mastery of skills; d) assess student progress throughout the instructional phase with formative assessments that provide feedback to students and teachers; e) remediate where necessary; and f ) provide summative assessment with both open-ended (teacherscored) and objective (computer-scored) instruments at the end of each unit and semester. This basic design for learning is enhanced by attention to the multiple representations of information (text, images, sound tracks, animations, short movies, manipulable charts, graphs, and equations) that support students' multiple learning styles. In each subject area, our instructional content is based on relevant national standards, the Standards for Success, and key state standards. Correlations to specific state standards are available on request. Information is presented in small, manageable segments that require students to make decisions as they navigate through it. Prompts and interactive exercises give students frequent opportunities to check their understanding and apply what they learn as they progress through a course. Rollover vocabulary provides important assistance to students who may otherwise be held back in their learning due to their reading level. Manipulables provide hands-on opportunities for students to master difficult concepts. They will function well using other browsers, but ther may be occasional visual anomalies. Netscape 6 is not supported. Some activities within AP Macroeconomics, AP Microeconomics, and AP Statistics courses may not function properly with Netscape 7. The AOL browser doesn't always perform satisfactorily. AOL users should use AOL to connect to the Internet and then use Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator to access our online learning products. Internet Explorer for Mac OS 9 is not supported. The Mozilla Firefox browser has not been formally tested. Installing Software The Apex Learning System Check-Up examines your computer configuration and helps install plug-in software. Go to and run the system check up before accessing our products. For More Information about hardware, software, network security, or bandwidth, please contact the Apex Learning Support Team at support@apexlearning.com or Note: Apex Learning products link to external educational web sites developed and controlled by third parties. We regularly review these sites for subject matter that would be inappropriate for our customers and for proper function. However, we cannot guarantee that such sites will work flawlessly on systems configured as indicated here. * Newer versions of operating systems and other software are also supported. ** Word processors should fully support the display of RTF documents. The 'HTML, Dynamic HTML, and Scripting' course also requires a basic text editor for HTML (NotePad, WordPad or TextEdit), WinZip (PC) or StuffIt (Mac), and an FTP client. 1 Previous versions of these operating systems have been verified to work with all Apex Learning products. Mac OS is the current version of Mac OS 9 and should only be used when Mac OS X is not available. The only web browser tested for Mac OS 9 is Internet Explorer which is no longer actively supported by Microsoft. Microsoft Windows 95 and NT are obsolete and no longer supported by Microsoft.

This program is part of the Title IID Competitive Grant recently awareded to the consortium. Delivery of the courses is via the Internet through a contract with APEX Learning.
