Course Title: Leadership and management in Nursing Practice II. Semester Credit Hours: 4 III. Course Description: Focus is on the concepts of leadership and management, and their implications for delivery of professional nursing care. Assessment and analysis of a real work problem, assessment of the work environment, and development of a proposed solution, as well as principles of client education are included. Prerequisite: NURS 302 and enrolled in NURS 301. IV. Course Delivery Method(s): Blended with a combination of classroom and online classes V. Required Textbooks/Resources: Nursing Leadership & Management: Theories, Processes, and Practice. Author: R.A.Jones. VI. Student Learning Outcomes: After completion of this course, the students should be able to: Assess real work problems and evaluate real or potential outcomes relative to quality of care and cost effectiveness. Analyze organizational design, governance, culture and health policy of the work environment, with emphasis upon decentralization, shared governance, case management and managed care. Analyze the process of quality monitoring and risk management. Analyze the process and measurement tools for performance appraisal.

2 Demonstrate communication and delegation strategies to manage the practice of other individuals, groups, and teams. Exercise critical thinking in budgeting and fiscal management, staffing and allocation of resources. Discuss strategies for effectively managing change. Demonstrate professional behaviors and accountability as a nurse leader, and as a manager of effective health care delivery. Successful achievement of these objectives will be demonstrated by a grade of 70 percent or better on the lecture exams. VII. A&M Texarkana Address: Upon application to Texas A&M University Texarkana an individual will be assigned an A&M Texarkana account. Faculty and students are required to utilize the university account when communicating about coursework. XV. 6 Drop Policy: University Drop Policy: To drop this course after the 12th class day, a student must complete the Drop/Withdrawal Request Form, located on the University website from classes.html) or obtained in the Registrar s Office. The student must submit the signed and completed form to the instructor of each course indicated on the form to be dropped for his/her signature. The signature is not an approval to drop, but rather confirmation that the student has discussed the drop/withdrawal with the faculty member. The form must be submitted to the Registrar s office for processing in person, Registrar@tamut.edu, mail (P. O. Box 5518, Texarkana, TX 75505) or fax ( ). Drop/withdraw forms missing any of the required information will not be accepted by the Registrar s Office for processing. It is the student s responsibility to ensure that the form is completed properly before submission. If a student stops participating in class (attending and submitting assignments) but does not complete and submit the drop/withdrawal form, a final grade based on work completed as outlined in the syllabus will be assigned. LATE WORK: Work submitted after midnight of the due date will be subject to a 10% per day grade reduction unless arrangements are made with the course faculty.
