3 GRADUATION MASTER THESIS Title Language Supervisor Thesis Summary Paperworks Filosofie e progetti per indagare le potenzialità del cartone in architettura Prof. Alessandra Zanelli A technology for the construction of temporary buildings with low environmental impact, costs and construction efforts, which can be used as modular architectures in emergency situations. The innovative idea is that the materials used for roof, walls and floor is the corrugated and honeycomb cardboard. Both products result from a recycling process and are themselves recyclable and biodegradable. Cardboard panels used like a building component are not a new idea, but it is the way of applying and using it that is new. In fact, the assemblage of the modules can be done without any additives or particular fixing materials and the strength of the structure can be due to its form. Small buildings can be easily built without constraints in the spaces characteristics, allow energy comfort performances, don t need any particular foundations, and the materials transportation presents more advantage. Moreover, the cardboard could be colored initially or even colored patched after construction. The research has been completed with a prototype project using multilayered honeycomb panels. The temporary structure has been planned for a design competition for a pavilion that needed to optimize phases of assembly and disassembly of structure. The result is a packable structure as if it were an object of packaging design. The new proposed technology opens new perspectives for the management of natural catastrophic problems too (earthquake, floods...). The honeycombshaped structure, fire retardant and hydrorepellent, allows thinking in an innovative way the understanding of house for emergency residence. In a renewed post-fordism period, architects have to rethink how to choose products that make up the building and to revise the entire design process. Thanks to software tools that facilitate the interface between designers and companies building products, it is possible to build homes with a wise choice of items in the catalog. The design of a building with limited complexity as the dwelling-house becomes the best location where you can control levels of quality, interfaces and performance, and you never have to defer these orders of choices in a next phase of project development. In this work contemporary examples are followed by technical reports on products and component, so the reader can understand relationships between project documentation and technical information.
