1 Department: CSMTLGY Subject: Student Learning Outcomes I N I T I A T I V E Course: CSMTLGY111 Freshman Students will be able to perform basic hair design concepts, demonstrate manicure techniques, practice hair sculpting procedures and identify and practice Industry Safety and Sanitation Standards. 97% of the students assessed were above or at entry level. In addition, the two morning and evening classes are working in harmony with established curriculum and state performance criteria. Observation: many students struggling with the current mannequins stands. More communication between all instructors working at this level. Shared information and instructional hand-outs and procedure sheets. Shared grading procedures and policies. The department needs to purchase tripods to address students struggling with sculpting procedures. None required. Critical thinking, practical skills and comprehension are all required elements for this assessment. Maintain safety and sanitation required by the State Board. 2 Course: CSMTLGY121 Junior Salon II Student will be able to demonstrate the proper procedures for waxing facial areas, applying masks, packs, scrubs and dermal lights for different skin types. Students will be able to perform thermal textures procedures utilizing the pressing comb, Marcel and electrical irons, plus applications for nail wraps and tips. 93% of the students were at or above entry level. 100% safety and sanitation. Students need more "hands on" classes dealing with pressing and curling. DVD that only relate to Pressing and Curling techniques. Purchase a series of DVD's that relate to techniques, products, and tools. Purchase more human hair wefts for practice. None required. Course: CSMTLGY131 Tinting 1 The students will be able to apply the law of color in identifying and demonstrating the applications of basic and intermediate hair coloring, bleaching, and toning techniques. Students need improvement in Double Draping procedure. Tucking the towels to hold the upper towel. SMA table set-up - what does on the SMA and what goes off the SMA. Standardized method of teaching state board procedures for all instructors at LATTC. Standardized DVDs of LATTC state board procedures for students to review. Label list for all state board classes. The department needs to receive the finished DVDs. The department needs resources to film more standardized DVDs for all state board procedures Review double draping DVD and table set-up. 3 Course: CSMTLGY141 Senior Salon I Students will complete all final preparations and procedures for customer services and licensure of the State Board Examination in haircutting, hair designing, chemical services, hair coloring and skin care. 98% of students assessed passed the practical examination for licensure. Students would benefit if they were provided kits already assembled from the cosmetology lab. Currently, students prepare their own kits for testing and many items are missing and there is no room around their stations to keep their individual kits neat and organized. The current process wastes too much time and the practical State Board test is timed. The department needs to purchase implements needed to properly prepare kits that are complete and ready for students to check out from the lab for Mock State Board testing. Currently, rubric mirrors the rubric utilized by the California State Board of testing examiners. Competency required by the California State Licensing Board and core competency for critical thinking, practical applications, and licensure for employment. Page 3 of 7

4 Course: CSMTLGY142 Senior Salon II Students will be able to demonstrate industry standard business practices including customer rapport, service planning, professional communication, client retention, referral and marking, cooperation with co-workers, building a portfolio and passing the State Board licensing exam. 90% of the students assessed passed the practical examination for licensure. Students would benefit if they were provided kits already assembled from the cosmetology lab. Currently, students prepare their own kits for testing and many items are missing and there is no room around their stations to keep their individual kits neat and organized. The current process wastes too much time and all testing is timed. The department needs to purchase implements needed to properly prepare kits that are complete and ready for students to check out from the lab for Mock State Board testing. 5 Course: CSMTLGY211 Intimidate Hair Coloring and Styling Students will be able to identify and demonstrate the skills required for mixing and applying demi-permanent, permanent hair coloring and bleaching compounds. 100% of the students were at or above entry level. Course: CSMTLGY214 Advanced Hair Coloring and Styling Students will be able to identify and demonstrate the skills required for special effects applications of hair color and bleach, while employment color correction techniques needed for industry. 98% of the students were at or above entry level. 6 Course: CSMTLGY215 Contemporary Styling Techniques Students will be able to analyze and create contemporary hair designs utilizing wet and thermal styling techniques required by industry. 98% of the students were at or above entry level. Some had problems with applying techniques for this Students need more "hands on" classes. More instructional materials. Course: CSMTLGY222 Introduction to Special Effects Makeup Techniques Students will be able to mix and apply makeup compounds creating a variety of special effects applications. 99% of the class was at or above entry level standards. Because this is an introductory class, I strongly advised the students to repeat the class to re-enforce their understand of chemical compounds and professional applications for employment requirements. I highly suggest that the department create the second component to the Special Effects Makeup industry requirements: live casting, mold making, rubber and foaming appliances. Curriculum will have to be written and additional supplies, compounds and equipment for this second phase purchased. Additional supplies for the second phase of the special effects classes will have to be obtained. Additional compound, bandages, plasters, concretes, alginates, mixers, scales and an oven. 7 Course: CSMTLGY36 Skin Therapy II Stu3ents will be able to operate equipment used for electrotherapy skin treatments on clients. 93% of the class was at entry level proficiency. I recommend instructors reinforce electrotherapy in Skin Therapy III. I also highly suggest the department develop a course to introduce students to other industry entry level electrotherapy treatments such as Microdermabrasion and Hydrofacials. More multifunction machines in the therapy room and Hydro and Microdermabrasion Machines. None Basic technical, practical and critical thinking skills are applied all of which are required for entry level employment. Course: CSMTLGY38 Skin Therapy IV Students will complete all final preparations and procedures for customer services and licensure of the State Board Examination in safety and sanitation, predisposition test, dermal light, scrub, waxing, tweezing, makeup, individual eyelashes and strip lashes. 90% of the students assessed passed the practical examination for licensure. I highly suggest developing an environment (mockboard examination room) that mirrors the State Board of Barbering and for esthetician and cosmetology students here at Trade Tech. Currently students have very little room around their stations to set up neatly and organized. A room, stations, all purpose chairs, manicure tables, shampoo bowls, station for thermal hairstyling, dermal light and a station with simulated product. Currently, rubric mirrors that rubric utilized by the California State Board of Barbering and testing exam for Estheticians. Competency required by the California State Licensing Board and core competency for critical thinking, practical applications, and licensure for employment. Page 7 of 7
