3 OVERVIEW Introduction Overview At a glance The Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (DLLR), Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing, State Board of Cosmetologists (Board) licenses and regulates individuals who practice the trade of cosmetology in the State of Maryland. The Board has contracted with Prometric Inc. to conduct its cosmetology licensing examination program. The Board examination is designed to test a candidate s knowledge, skills and abilities to practice and to determine whether a candidate is prepared to assume responsibility for the safety and welfare of the public. This bulletin is your guide to taking the Maryland Cosmetologist, Senior Cosmetologist, Esthetician and Nail Technician Examinations. Follow these main steps if you are interested in obtaining a license from the DLLR. To obtain your license 1 Once you receive your letter of eligibility, complete and submit the exam application form, fee(s) and any required documentation to Prometric. 2 Schedule your exam following the procedures outlined in this bulletin Page 4. 4 UNDERSTANDING LICENSE REQUIREMENTS Understanding license requirements To be eligible to take an exam, you must meet the following training requirements, and fill out the appropriate section(s) of the exam application form. Incomplete application packages will not be processed and will be returned to you. Cosmetologist Students-theory only. If you wish to take the Cosmetologist theory exam, you must: Complete 1,380 hours of instruction; and Complete the exam application form (on Page 19), including the Student Training section. Students-practical only. If you passed the theory exam at 1,380 hours and now wish to take the Cosmetologist practical exam, you must: Complete 1,500 hours of instruction; Complete the exam application form (on Page 19); and Have the director or instructor of the school you attended complete the Student Training section of the exam application form and notarize the form with the school seal or notary seal to provide proof that you completed the required hours of training in a Cosmetology school approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission or the Maryland State Department of Education. Students-theory and practical. If you wish to take the Cosmetologist theory and practical exam at the same time, you must: Complete 1,500 hours of instruction; Complete the exam application form (on Page 19); and Have the director or instructor of the school you attended complete the Student Training section of the exam application form and notarize the form with the school seal or notary seal. Note This notarized form provides proof that you completed the required hours of training in a Cosmetology school approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission or the Maryland State Department of Education. Apprentices. If you have worked as registered apprentice in a licensed salon for 24 months and wish to take the Cosmetologist exams, you must: Submit your final monthly hour reports to the state (you will receive a letter of eligibility from the state that verifies you may test); Have your licensed supervisor complete the Apprentice Training Certification section of the exam application form; and Mail both the application form and the original letter of eligibility to Prometric. Barbers who wish to take the Cosmetologist exams must: Complete 750 hours of instruction in a Cosmetology school approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission or the Maryland State Department of Education; Complete the exam application form (on Page 19); Have the director or instructor of the school you attended complete the Student Training section of the exam application form and notarize the form with the school seal or notary seal; and 2
5 SENIOR COSMETOLOGIST Senior Cosmetologist Esthetician Attach a copy of your current barber license to the exam application form and mail to Prometric. If you wish to take the Senior Cosmetologist exam, you must: Complete the exam application form (on Page 19); Submit the letter of approval from the Board that states you have two years of licensed experience; Have the owner or licensed supervisor of the licensed salon or shop where you work complete the Senior Cosmetologist Experience Verification section of the exam application form (on Page 20); and Include a copy of your current Cosmetologist license with the exam application form and mail to Prometric. Students. If you wish to take the Esthetician exams, you must: Complete 600 hours of instruction; Complete the exam application form (on Page 19); and Have the director or instructor of the school you attended complete the Student Training section of the exam application form and notarize the form with the school seal or notary seal. Note This notarized form provides proof that you completed the required hours of training in a Cosmetology school approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission or the Maryland State Department of Education. Nail Technician Apprentices. If you have worked as a registered apprentice in a licensed salon for a minimum of 30 hours per week for a period of six months and wish to take the Esthetician exams, you must: Submit your final monthly hour reports to the state (you will receive a letter of eligibility from the state that verifies you may test); Have your licensed supervisor complete the Apprentice Training Certification section of the exam application form; and Mail both the application form and the original letter of eligibility to Prometric. Students. If you wish to take the Nail Technician exams, you must: Complete 250 hours of instruction; Complete the exam application form (on Page 19); and Have the director or instructor of the school you attended complete the Student Training section of the exam application form and notarize the form with the school seal or notary seal. Note This notarized form provides proof that you completed the required hours of training in a Cosmetology school approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission or the Maryland State Department of Education. Apprentices. If you have worked as a registered apprentice in a licensed salon for 24 months and wish to take the Nail Technician exams, you must: Submit your final monthly hour reports to the state (you will receive a letter of eligibility from the state that verifies you may test); Have your licensed supervisor complete the Apprentice Training Certification section of the exam application form; and 3
6 REGISTERING AND SCHEDULING YOUR EXAMS Out-of-State Candidates Mail both the application form and the original letter of eligibility to Prometric. If you completed your training outside of Maryland, or you are licensed and practice in another state, you must obtain a letter of eligibility from the State of Maryland to sit for these exams. To obtain a letter of eligibility, you must submit a certification letter from your State Board to the State of Maryland for consideration. The certification letter must have the out-of-state Board seal, and it must demonstrate that you have completed equal training to the State of Maryland or that you have tested and have a current license in that state. Upon approval, a letter of eligibility will be mailed to you. Complete the exam application form and mail both the application and original letter of eligibility to Prometric. Important If you take an exam without prior approval from the State of Maryland, your test scores will be invalidated and you will not receive a license. If you take an exam unnecessarily or before you have been approved, the exam fee will not be refunded. Foreign Trained If you trained abroad, you must obtain a letter of eligibility to sit for the Maryland licensure exams. To obtain a letter of eligibility, you must submit to the State of Maryland: A letter of certification; A sworn affidavit of training; A notarized letter of work experience; and A copy of your current license. Any foreign credentials must be translated into English and notarized. Upon approval, a letter of eligibility will be mailed to you. You may then complete the exam application form and mail it, credentials from your country, and the letter of eligibility to Prometric. Registering and scheduling your exams Registering for exams Follow the instructions in this section to register and schedule an appointment to take your exam. Before you can test, you must: 1 Mail the completed exam application form on Page 19, along with all fees, to Prometric. If required, be sure to include the original letter of eligibility that you received from the state. 2 Approximately 10 days after mailing your exam application materials and fees, contact Prometric to schedule an appointment. Note All first-time test takers should apply to take both the theory exam and the practical exam. Accommodations. If you require ADA accommodation or ESL consideration, see Special test considerations on Page 6 before registering. 4
7 SCHEDULING YOUR EXAMS Scheduling your exams After you mail your application materials, please allow 10 days for Prometric to receive and process it. Once Prometric has received and processed your exam application form, you will need to schedule an appointment to take your exam. You are encouraged to schedule your exam using the Prometric Internet scheduling system. Scheduling is also available by phone. To schedule an exam online 1 Access 2 Click on Continue in the Do More box and follow the prompts. To schedule an exam by phone 1 Call between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. (Eastern Time), Monday through Friday. You must schedule your practical exam at least 10 business days prior to the date you wish to test. 2 At the end of the call, you will be given a number confirming your appointment. Record and keep this confirmation number for your records. Holidays. Testing generally does not occur on the following holidays: New Year s Day Martin Luther King Jr. Day Presidents Day Independence Day Labor Day Thanksgiving Day Memorial Day Christmas Day Additional state holidays may be observed in the state where you schedule your exam appointment. Test centers The theory exam is given on a computer. You may take your theory exam at any Prometric test center in the United States. A complete list of test center locations may be found by going to and clicking on the Do More button. Alternatively, you may call The practical exam consists of actual demonstrations. Practical exams are given only at the test sites listed below. Test Sites Baltimore Area 2505 Lord Baltimore Drive, Suite D-E Baltimore, MD Bethesda, MD 8120 Woodmont Avenue Bethesda, MD Directions From the South: Take I-695 north to Security Blvd. and turn left. Take Security Blvd. to Lord Baltimore Dr. and turn right. The test center is on the righthand side of the street. Take 495 to exit 34. Follow 355 south past National Institute of Health. Bear right onto Woodmont Avenue, second traffic light turn right into Public parking garage. Bring quarters for meters. Test center locations are subject to change. Be sure to verify the address of and directions to your destination before you leave for your exam. 5
8 REGISTERING AND SCHEDULING YOUR EXAMS Rescheduling your appointment Important You must pass both the theory and the practical exams within 12 months to be eligible for licensure with the Board. Retaking an exam If you allowed your exam registration to expire or did not pass your exam, you must re-register using one of the methods above. Another exam registration fee is required. To avoid an additional fee, you must contact Prometric to reschedule an exam at least three full business days before the day of your originally scheduled theory exam appointment, and at least 10 full business days before the day of your originally scheduled practical exam appointment. Rescheduling fees are as follows: No fee if you reschedule your theory exam on or before the fourth business day prior to your appointment date. No fee if you reschedule your practical exam on or before the 11th business day prior to your appointment date. $40 fee if you reschedule your theory exam less than three days before your exam. $40 fee if you reschedule your practical exam less than 10 days before your exam. Note This schedule does not include holidays since holidays are not business days. You will need to call earlier if a holiday is involved. You may pay any additional fee with Visa or MasterCard and reschedule your appointment online or by calling Prometric at If absent or late for your appointment If you miss your appointment or arrive late and are not allowed to test, you must pay a $40 rescheduling fee before choosing another appointment. This fee will allow you to use your original exam registration. If you are unable to attend your scheduled exam due to illness or emergency, call Prometric. Under certain circumstances, the fee to reschedule may be waived. Prometric reserves the right to request documentation to support any illness or emergency claim. Emergency closings Severe weather or an emergency could require canceling scheduled exams. If this occurs, Prometric will attempt to contact you by phone or ; however, you may check for testing site closures by calling Prometric. If the site is closed, your exam will be rescheduled without a rescheduling fee. If a testing center is open for testing and you choose not to appear for testing, your fee will be forfeited and you will need to pay another application fee and another full exam fee. Special test considerations ADA accommodation. If you require testing accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), please call Prometric at to obtain an accommodation request form. Reasonable testing accommodations are provided to 6
9 WHAT TO BRING TO THE EXAM allow candidates with documented disabilities recognized under the ADA an opportunity to demonstrate their skills and knowledge. Submit professional documentation of your disability to help us determine the necessary testing arrangements. Thirty days advance notice is required for all special testing arrangements. There is no additional charge for accommodations. ESL accommodation. If English is your second language, and you require a wordto-word translation dictionary for the theory exam, contact Prometric at Taking your exam Knowing what to expect when taking your exam may help you prepare for it. This section contains: What to bring to the exam A list of what to bring to the exam. An overview of the theory exam. An overview of the practical exam. Regulations that will be enforced at the test center. A guide to understanding your exam results. Information about appeals. Arrival. You should arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled exam appointment. This will allow time to verify your identification, have your photo taken and sign in. Identification required. You must present a valid form of identification before you can test. That identification document must: Be government-issued (e.g., driver s license, state-issued identification card or military identification card). Contain both a current photo and your signature. Have a name that exactly matches the name used to register for the exam (including designations such as Jr. and III ). Important If you do not provide correct identification at the time of the exam, it is considered a missed appointment. You will be required to pay a rescheduling fee before choosing another appointment. If you cannot provide the identification listed above, contact Prometric before scheduling your appointment to arrange an alternative way to meet this requirement. Theory exam overview Practical exam additional items. Besides the identification listed above, if you are taking a practical exam, you must bring the following with you to the exam site: Your Candidate admission letter. Beauty supply/equipment kit with enough supplies to complete all exam services (see supply lists beginning on Page 17). Model and mannequin (see specific requirements on Page 8). Your theory exam will be given by computer at a Prometric test center. Before you start the exam, you will receive a personalized introduction to the testing system. You can also take an introductory lesson on the computer. 7
10 TAKING YOUR EXAM You do not need computer experience to use this system. You will use a computer mouse to select answers. There is no way you can damage your test by accidentally touching a wrong key. The theory exam content outlines beginning on Page 12 of this bulletin are the basis for the exams. Questions on the exam are in a multiple-choice format with one correct answer and three incorrect responses. Practical exam overview Practical exams consist of actual demonstrations. You will be given instructions before beginning each service. You will then have a specified time to set up your supplies and equipment before the timed service begins. The practical exam content outlines are shown in this bulletin beginning on Page 14. During a practical exam, you must follow all appropriate rules for client protection to ensure the health, safety and welfare of the public. This includes personal preparation and infection control, wet draping or chemical draping of your mannequin or model (Esthetician only) between each demonstration, wearing gloves for all chemical demonstrations, and being in control of your supply kit at all times. Be aware that an examiner is always rating you. The examiners will rate more than one person for each service. If for some reason your performance is not observed, you may be requested to repeat a task. Supply kit You are responsible for bringing your own supplies and equipment in sufficient quantities (see lists beginning on Page 17). All supplies and equipment must be in sanitary condition and in proper working order. All bottles, jars and containers must be labeled. All acrylic liquid products must be odorless or odor-free and in their original unopened bottles. The kit will be used during the examination as a dry sanitizer. You may not borrow from another candidate or from the test site location. Blood spill critical service As of September 23, 2010, the blood spill safety procedure is a critical client protection component of all practical exams. To successfully pass a practical exam, you must pass the blood spill safety service. If you fail the blood spill service, you will have to retake the entire practical exam. You are required to bring all first aid materials needed to safely handle a blood spill (see list on Page 17). All products used during a blood spill incident must be applied with an applicator. Every attempt must be made to ensure that articles do not come in contact with the skin or the wound. Cosmetology practical exam mannequin requirements This exam is performed using a mannequin head and a mannequin hand. You must bring a mannequin stand (clamp or tripod) for your mannequin head. You must have one mannequin hand for the manicure set up and sculptured nail service. The hand must be prepared with artificial nails (tips) prior to arriving at the test site. You may lay your mannequin hand on a prepared towel while you perform your nail services. For the sculpture nail service, all liquid and powder products must be in the original manufacturer s container and unopened. Each product must be labeled either 8
11 TEST CENTER REGULATIONS odorless or odor free. If the product does not meet these requirements, you will not be allowed to test in the sculptured nail section of the exam. General supplies. You must bring the following items with you: One mannequin head with mannequin stand (clamp or tripod). Pre-sectioned mannequin heads are prohibited. One mannequin hand with a full set of nails that is prepared prior to arriving at the test site. The nails must have a free edge no longer than ¼ inch. Nail Technician practical exam mannequin requirements You must have one mannequin hand for all of the manicure and nail enhancement services. The hand must be prepared with artificial nails (tips) prior to arriving at the test site. The manicure and polish application will be demonstrated on three fingers. On the other two fingers, you will demonstrate your sculptured nail service and nail tip. The nail wrap will be demonstrated on the same finger on which you performed the nail tip. You may lay your mannequin hand on a prepared towel while you perform your nail services. For the sculpture nail service, all liquid and powder products must be in the original manufacturer s container and unopened. Each product must be labeled either odorless or odor free. If the product does not meet these requirements, you will not be allowed to test in the sculptured nail section of the exam. General supplies. You must bring the following with you: One mannequin hand with a full set of nails that is prepared prior to arriving at the test site. The nails must have a free edge no longer than ¼ inch. Esthetician practical exam model requirements This exam is performed using a model whom you must bring with you to the testing center. Mannequins are not permitted. The model must be at least 16 years old and appropriately dressed for examination purposes. The model s face must be clean, without make-up, free from skin disease, and have eyebrows that can be shaped and tweezed. Your model must bring a current, government-issued photo identification (e.g. driver's license) with him/her to the testing center. The model cannot be a student, current licensee or past licensee barber, master barber, cosmetologist, senior cosmetologist, nail technician or esthetician. The model may not participate in any way during your examination. For example, there is to be no talking or handing you supplies, etc. You are responsible for your model s actions. Make sure that your model reads and understands this portion of the bulletin. Your model will be required to sign a Model Affidavit. Note If your model fails to appear, arrives late, arrives without proper identification, or refuses to sign the Model Affidavit, you will not be allowed to test. Test center regulations To ensure that all candidates are tested under equally favorable conditions, the following regulations and procedures will be observed at each test center. Failure to follow any of these security procedures may result in the disqualification of your 9
12 TAKING YOUR EXAM examination. Prometric reserves the right to audiotape and videotape any examination session. References Personal items Breaks Visitors Misconduct or disruptive behavior Weapons No reference materials, papers or study materials are allowed at the test center. If you are found with these or any other aids, you will not be allowed to continue the exam and your answers will not be scored. Prometric is not responsible for items left in the reception area of the test center. While lockers are provided, it is recommended that personal items not be brought into the test center. Note the following: Electronic equipment cell phones, PDAs, pagers, cameras, tape recorders, etc. is not permitted in the testing room and must be powered off while stored in a locker. Other personal items watches, outerwear that is not being worn while testing (sweater, jacket, etc.), briefcases, purses, etc. are not permitted in the testing room. Every time you enter the test room, you will be asked to turn your pockets inside out to confirm that you have no prohibited items. The test center administrator will collect any materials that violate the rules. If you leave the testing room while an exam is in progress, you must sign out/in on the roster and you will lose exam time. You are not allowed to use any electronic devices or phones during breaks. No guests, visitors or family members are allowed at the test center. Candidates who engage in any kind of misconduct or disruptive or offensive behavior may be dismissed from the examination. Examples are: giving or receiving help, taking part in an act of impersonation, removing test materials or notes from the testing room, using rude or offensive language and behavior that delays or interrupts testing. Weapons are not allowed at the test center. Copyrighted questions. All test questions are the property of Prometric Inc. and are protected by copyright. Federal law provides severe civil and criminal penalties for the unauthorized reproduction, distribution, or exhibition of copyrighted materials. If questions arise. Test center administrators are not allowed to answer any questions pertaining to the exam content. If you do not understand a question on the examination, you should answer the question to the best of your ability. Your exam results Your score report will provide you with information regarding the next step in the licensure process. Score reports are generated differently depending on whether you are taking a computerized exam or a practical exam. Theory exam. At the end of your exam, your score will be shown on the screen and you will receive a printed score report. The report will indicate Pass or Fail and your overall percentage. A score of 75 percent or above is required to pass. Practical exam. To pass the practical exam, you must receive a score of 75 percent or above on the total exam. If you do not pass the blood spill task line, you will automatically fail and you will need to retake the entire exam. Your score report will detail if you fail as a result of not passing the blood spill line. Practical exam results will be sent to you within 10 business days of the exam date. 10
13 APPEALS PROCESS Applying for a license. Once you have passed both your theory and your practical exams, your results will be sent to the State of Maryland. Only the DLLR and the Board may determine your eligibility for a license. For more information regarding cosmetology-related licensing requirements, please contact the Board at the address on Page 1 or online at Retake information. If you do not pass the exam, you must re-register, reschedule and pay another full exam fee. Each time you retake an exam you will be given a different form or version of the exam. You are strongly encouraged to study prior to retaking an exam. Duplicate score report. You may call or write to Prometric to request a duplicate of your score report. The fee is $15 per score report per exam. Appeals process Our goal is to provide a quality exam and a pleasant testing experience for every candidate. If you are dissatisfied with either and believe we can correct the problem, we would like to hear from you. We provide an opportunity for general comments at the end of your exam. Our personnel will review your comments, but you will not receive a direct response. If your concern is regarding the content of the exam, or you feel your concern was not resolved at the testing center, you must mail your comments in writing to the DLLR. Your appeal letter must provide your name and identification number, the exam title, the date you tested and the details of your concern, including all relevant facts. Be sure to include your signature and return address. Mail your appeal letter to: Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation State Board of Cosmetologists 500 N. Calvert Street, Room 201 Baltimore, Maryland Faxed appeals will not be accepted because an original signature is required. DLLR will forward your appeal letter to Prometric and the two parties will arrive at resolution. You will receive a written response within 10 business days of receipt. If your concern is regarding registration, scheduling or test administration (testing site procedures, equipment, personnel, etc.), you may either mail or fax your concern to the DLLR. In your letter, include your name, your Social Security number, the name of the exam, the date you tested and a specific description of your concern and the relevant facts surrounding it. The DLLR will forward the concern to Prometric, and the two parties will arrive at a resolution. You will receive a response in writing from the Appeal Committee within 10 business days of receipt of the concern by Prometric. 11

Manicure Table Set Up And Sculptured Nail Service - 21 tasks, 28 minutes You will be rated on safety, sanitation and infection control, application, filing, appearance and any blood spills. II. III. Set up your work area for the mock eyebrow wax service and drape your mannequin. Simulate the removal of excess hair from one eyebrow, using a mock wax. Thermal Curling - 14 tasks, 10 minutes You will be observed and scored on safety, sanitation and infection control; iron testing technique; and proper draping of your mannequin. You will form four curls on the center top of the head using a Marcel curling iron: one curl that is properly placed on-base; one curl that is properly placed off-base; one curl that is properly placed half off-base; and one curl that is properly placed in a figure 8 or a two-loop curl. 14
17 EXAM CONTENT OUTLINES IV. Hair Shaping - 20 tasks, 40 minutes You will be expected to demonstrate proper cutting, draping, safety, sanitation and infection control. You must perform a 90-degree, layered haircut, using shears and razor: Remove at least 1 inch of hair throughout the entire head; and Establish a horizontal guideline by using a razor at the nape area only. The remaining hair should be no shorter than 4 inches or longer than 6 inches in length to perform the remaining services. Clean your work area after the haircut has been checked. V. Chemical Wave, Permanent Wave - 18 tasks, 15 minutes You will be observed and scored on safety, sanitation and infection control, and proper draping of your mannequin. VI. Wrap 10 rods in the center back of the head from the crown to the nape area using the proper size rods for the length of hair to be wrapped. When instructed by the rater, use water to demonstrate the application of waving lotion. Do not remove any rods or take down any sections until you are instructed to do so. Perform a test curl. Hair Lightening and Hair Coloring - 14 tasks, 20 minutes The service will be divided into two, 10-minute sections. You will be observed and scored on safety, sanitation and infection control, and proper draping of your mannequin. Standing behind your mannequin, divide the hair into four equal sections. Section #1 is the right, front section of the mannequin s head. Section #2 is the right rear section. Section #3 is the left front section. Section #4 is the left rear section. Each section is to be treated as a new client. Virgin Hair Lightening 10 minutes Demonstrate the application of a first-time (virgin), hair-lightening application to Section #1 (right front) of the head using a bowl and brush, or a bottle for application. Retouch Hair Coloring 10 minutes Demonstrate the application of a mock tint. Apply a tint retouch, going darker, to Section #2 (right rear) of the head using a bowl and brush, or bottle for application. VII. Chemical Relaxer and Relaxer Retouch - 11 tasks, 20 minutes The service will be divided into two, 10-minute sections. You will be observed and scored on safety, sanitation and infection control, and proper draping of your mannequin. Virgin Chemical Relaxer 10 minutes Demonstrate the application of a first-time (virgin), no base relaxer treatment to Section #4 (left rear) of the head, using a bowl and brush or bottle for application. Retouch Relaxer 10 minutes Demonstrate a two-inch no base retouch application to Section #3 (left front) of the head, using a bowl and brush or bottle for application. VIII. Blood Spill Safety Critical Section 7 tasks, 10 minutes For this service, you must follow Prometric s Blood Spill Procedure outlined below. The Procedure will also be posted at the exam site. 1. Stop service and put on gloves. 2. Clean injured area. 3. Apply antiseptic/styptic powder with an applicator. 4. Apply appropriate dressing to injured area. 5. Dispose of contaminated materials. 6. Clean work area and tools with an EPAapproved, broad spectrum disinfectant. 7. Candidate removes gloves and sanitizes hands. IX. Final Clean Up - 15 minutes You will have 15 minutes after the exam to clean your chair, including under the cushion and base. Leave the chair in the down position. Clean the mirror and station, and sweep around the chair. Maryland Nail Technician Practical Exam Content Outline Approximate Time: 127 minutes The content outline below lists the services you will be asked to perform; the number of tasks within each service; the time allowed for each service (including setup time); and a brief description of the service. If you do not complete the work within the time limit, you will be graded accordingly. For the sculpture nail service, all liquid and all powder products must be in the original manufacturer s container, unopened. Each product must be labeled either odorless or oder free. If the product does not meet these requirements, you will not be allowed to test in the sculpture nail section of the exam. I. Manicure and Polish Service - 19 tasks, 30 minutes You will be observed and scored on safety, sanitation, infection control, cuticle pushing, filing, massage, polish application and blood spill procedures, if necessary. You are not allowed to use nippers for this procedure. You will: II. Prepare and demonstrate a basic manicure on one mannequin hand (all five fingers), including a massage on the fingers and hand. Nail Wrap - 14 tasks, 25 minutes You will be observed and scored on safety, sanitation and infection control, application of the nail wrap, filing, and appearance of the finished nail. You will: Apply a nail wrap to the nail tip you have just finished. (Do not polish the nail wrap.) Demonstrate cutting the wrap to fit the nail to which it will be attached. You will be observed and scored on the safety, sanitation and infection control; set up of II. III. IV. your equipment and supplies; preparation of your workspace; and preparation of your model. Cleansing Skin and Face - 9 tasks, 10 minutes You will cleanse your model s skin and apply freshener, toner or astringent. You will be observed and scored on safety, sanitation and infection control, and correct cleansing procedures. Steaming the Face - 5 tasks, 10 minutes You will be observed and scored on safety, sanitation and infection control, and correct procedures and application of a steam towel. Massaging the Face - 11 tasks, 15 minutes You will be observed and scored for safety, sanitation and infection control; cream application and removal; and facial manipulations. You will: Apply the massage cream, perform facial manipulations and remove the massage cream. Demonstrate effleurage, petrissage, and tapotement. Continue to perform manipulations until you are instructed to stop. V. Mask/Pack - 11 tasks, 10 minutes You will apply a facial mask or pack and then remove it. You will be observed and scored for safety, sanitation and infection control, application of mask or pack and its removal. VI. Hair Removal, Eyebrow Arch - Tweezers - 9 tasks, 10 minutes You will be observed and scored for safety, sanitation and infection control, establishing eyebrow arch and correct removal of hair. You will remove excess hair from one eyebrow using a tweezers. A line change must be observed by the rater. VII. Hair Removal, Eyebrow Arch Mock Wax - 10 tasks, 10 minutes You will simulate the removal of excess hair from either eyebrow, using a mock wax. You will be observed and scored for safety, sanitation and infection control, application and correct removal of hair. VIII. Facial Makeup 13 tasks, 30 minutes You will demonstrate a daytime makeup application using concealer, foundation, blush, eye shadow, eyeliner, mascara, lip liner and lipstick. You may not borrow from another candidate or from the test site location. All bottles, jars and containers must be clearly marked and labeled. Handwritten labels are acceptable. The kit will be used during the examination as a dry sanitizer. You must bring simulated products for the chemical services. Examples of simulated products are cholesterol, either colored or plain; colored gel; and water. Prometric does not recommend any specific product. You may use any simulated product; however, most candidates use cholesterol for the protective cream, colored cholesterol or colored gel for the simulated hair color, water for the permanent wave lotion, and cold wax for esthetician eyebrow wax. The following are the recommended equipment and supplies for each practical exam. The Blood Spill Supply List should be brought for all exams.
