Lyon is located in the department, Rhône and the region, Rhône-Alpes ESDES = École supérieure pour le développement économique et social ESDES is The Business School of Catholic University in Lyon UCLy = Université Catholique de Lyon Top Tips Bring a plug adaptor Can you use your Electrical appliances as soon as you arrive in Lyon? The voltage is 220 volts and we have two-pin plugs in France so don t forget to buy a plug adaptor if the voltage is 110 volts in your country or you do not use a two-pin plug system as in the photo. Water Tap water is safe in France. You don t need to buy mineral water Temperature in Lyon Semester 1 September and October: average temperature between 10 C / 50.0 F and 20 C / 68.0 F November and December: average temperatures are fairly cold (between 0 C / 32.0 F and 10 C / 50.0 F). Semester 2 January, February, and March: average temperatures are fairly cold (between 0 C / 32.0 F and 10 C / 50.0 F). In March temperatures start to increase slightly. April, May and June: average temperatures are pleasant 10 C / 50.0 F and 20 C / 68.0 F. Exchanging money to Euros The nearest bureau de change to ESDES is located at: Global Cash 67 rue Victor Hugo LYON France Website: We advise students not to bring large quantities of cash with them to France but to bring enough cash to live off for the first couple of days until they have set up a French bank account. 2 Prepare yourself! ESDES International Office organizes cultural activities for you during your stay in Lyon. Here is a list of examples from the past; - Wine tasting - Visit of the castles - French cooking class - International dinner - And many more You, as an international student at ESDES, will participate at the International Dinner and Global Village and will represent your country. Don t forget to bring anything that will help you to decorate your stand/table, ingredients for cooking your national dish, flags, pins, etc anything that is typically from your country. Getting to Lyon: Travel 1. From Lyon St Exupery airport to city centre St Exupery airport is the nearest airport to Lyon. Lyon has a high speed tram service between the city and the airport called Rhonexpress. You can purchase your ticket online at: For students arriving by train, Perrache station is closest to ESDES. 2. From Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport to Lyon (by train) There are direct trains from the TGV station at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport to Lyon La Part-Dieu Station (but not to Lyon-Perrache). Alternatively you can take the RER suburban metro to Chatelet, change into the train going towards Boissy St Léger and get off at the Gare de Lyon station. High speed TGV trains run frequently from the Gare de Lyon to either the Lyon-La Part Dieu or Lyon- Perrache Station. You can purchase your ticket online at: ESDES Lyon Business School has moved to a brand new building in July 2015 so we will be welcoming you at the new campus in January Leave the train station towards cours Charlemagne (not Place Carnot which will put you on the other side of the station). 3 Lyon Public Transport: Lyon public transport is easy to use. You can check the website of TCL (see apps page 5) Information is available in French, English, Spanish, Italian and German. You can check the metro and bus times and routes as well as plan your journey etc There are different types of tickets you can purchase to use the public transportation system. Single Use ticket A «Ticket à l'unité» costs around 1.70 (or 2 if you buy it directly from the driver on the bus). With this ticket you can travel via bus, tram and metro for up to one hour after you first use it. Purchase ten tickets at once If you are not going to buy a monthly pass, it is cheaper to buy a «Carnet de 10 tickets - étudiants et scolaires» which costs if you are under 28 years old. And if you are over 28 years, it is cheaper to buy a «Carnet de 10 tickets - tariff normal» which costs Monthly Pass You can buy a monthly pass which gives you unlimited use of the bus, tram and metro. The ticket is valid from the first of the month until the end of the month. There are two different prices: 1. If you are under 28 years old, the monthly pass for you is called «Campus» and costs per month. 2. If you are over 28 years, the monthly pass for you is called «Pass partout» and costs per month or if paid by direct debit. 3 P a g e

4 To get a Pass you will need: 1. Certificat de scolarité (certificate of enrolment) given to you when you register at ESDES 2. ID card or Passport 3. Certificat de logement (housing certificate) given to you by your residence 4. Passport sized photograph 5. 5 for Técély card You can get the Pass at any major metro station like Perrache,Bellecour, Part-Dieu or Grange Blanche Hiring a bike in Lyon: Vélo v There are a number of Vélo v bike stations throughout Lyon where students can hire a bike to get around the city. You can hire a bicycle at any Vélo'v station in Lyon, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. All you need is a long-term subscription or a short-term ticket. Hiring an eco-friendly electric car: Bluely There is a possibility to hire a car in Lyon for couple of hours or even just short transfers. More information: Taxis in Lyon When arriving in Lyon we strongly recommend taking a taxi if you have a lot of luggage. The trip from Lyon St Exupéry Airport to the city centre cost between If you are taking a taxi from a train station or the airport in France, there is an extra service fee of a few euros. Each bag also costs extra. ESDES International Student Club A group of 40 voluntary students from the ESDES business school are available to help all International Business Programme students to have the time of their life in Lyon. The association helps you during your arrival in France. During check-in, Club IBP will be present to provide advice about banking, help with any administration duties, set up your transport cards and help you to discover Lyon and meet other IBP students Club IBP also helps students to settle into the French student life by organizing events all semester long including parties, international dinners, photo contests and cultural visits. Playoff ESDES This association is about gathering all the sports associations together to allow students to discover different sports such as squash and paintball in the first semester and boxing, ice skating, and American football in the second semester. 6 P a g e

7 IBP students can also participate in competitions with the football, basketball, volleyball and handball teams. Contact: Equinox Equinox is a humanitarian association which helps disabled people in the Balkans. All year the association collects materials and money to take to these people during a one week trip. Contact: Léa Courrieu, , [email protected] Hand Joy Hand Joy is a very small association with less than 10 students involved, exactly 8 last year, but this is the association s strength, because everybody shares the workload and no one has predefined roles. Hand Joy organizes two big events: the first event is a lottery for mentally handicapped people and takes place during first semester. For this event Hand Joy works with another association ALGED. This event attracts around 300 people each year. In second semester, the association organizes a child's dream for children who are hospitalized. For example last year Hand Joy organized a meeting with some soccer players for a child called Anthony. The association currently has four projects, linked with food, road safety, information technology and the recycling of books. At the end of the school year the association takes part in the Enactus France championship where the group presents the projects undertaken and the association s results in front of professionals.hope you ll help Enactus win the next one!! 8 Oxygène ESDES Oxygène ESDES is an association of 60 members which organizes some events for disadvantaged children from Lyon. Two major events take place every year: "Un Noël Glacé Mille Enfants Gâtés": An afternoon dedicated to the theme of Christmas at the ice rink, Charlemagne in Lyon children come to the event to enjoy a show (ice dancing, magic, dance...), meet Father Christmas and receive some gifts and cakes. "Enygma": A treasure hunt in Lyon for 150 children with a specific theme every year (pirate, Asterix & Obelix...). During the afternoon, the children take part in different activities and receive some gifts and cakes. Give your contact information to people at home who may need to get in touch with you 8. Carry a copy of the directions for arrival with you 9. Photocopy all important information (visa, passport, birth certificate, insurance coverage, travelers cheques, prescription medication, permanent ID/driver s license, etc) leaving a second copy at home or make a scanned copy of the above information that you can access through your 10. Make a note of your nearest consulate in case of an emergency. 11. Bring two signed copies of your learning agreements to be signed by ESDES 12. Carry several passport sized photos for administrative documents once you arrive 13. Have enough cash in Euros to get you through the first few days 14. Pack something from your home country/culture to share (e.g. costume, flag, snack, recipe, etc) 15. Learn a few words in French 16. Be ready for a cultural transition 17.
