The demands placed on the passive equipment in FTTH netws are far higherthananypreviouslydeployedoptical infrastructure. These netws must be more flexible and dynamic. This document presents Corning Cable Systems generic system solution outside plant which has been developed specifically to meet this demanding application. This product set will deliver a high quality optical netw whilst enabling low operations costs. Corning Cable Systems Evolant Outside Plant (OSP) Solution FTTH Netws is specifically designed to meet the challenges faced by Netw Operators rolling out large-scale FTTH applications. Our proven pre-connectorised OSP solutions enable Netw Operators to keep pace with the increased magnitude in broadband access demand and connect customers faster. Corning Evolant FTTH Outside Plant Solution comprises comprehensive product sets designed to enable Netw Operators to significantly reduce the costs of netw build and operation, speed up deployment as well as increase customer satisfaction. Based on a typical brownfield FTTH netw configuration, netw roll-outs deploying this advanced product portfolio can benefit from a significant reduction in total roll-out costs by: employing less skilled labour achieving more connections per day addressing the churn factor often experienced by today s Netw Operators. The Pre-connectorised OSP Solution FTTH Netws and its Value Proposition Pre-connectorised products can reduce the labour burden of FTTH rollouts and provide a lower overall installed cost compared to conventional spliced solutions. Significant savings can also be realised through lower operation and maintenance costs. Our solution has been developed specifically high volume national FTTH rollouts in an overlay build scenario. However, these products are just as applicable to smaller projects, including full provision of fiber in greenfield builds. The pre-connectorised solution enables individual customer connections to be made using staff with minimal optical plant experience and without any specialised installation equipment. In fact, greenfield builds it would be possible the customer installation to be completed by the same field resource deployed to install the other utilities. The basic principle of the value proposition is that although the pre-connectorised components may initially cost slightly more than conventional equipment, the cost difference is more than outweighed by the saving in installation and operational costs which can be achieved in the field. The key advantages of the pre-connectorised solution are: - Fast, low cost installation - Low skill installation, in particular the customer drop - Modular netw build - High reliability. Fiber jointing is carried out in quality controlled factory environment. All preassembled components are supplied fully tested - Lower operations costs. Easier netw configuration and fast access to optical netw testing and maintenance purposes - Easy swap out of components future netw upgrades 2
Corning OSP Solutions FTTH Netws An Evolant Solution Replace these with this simply plug one cable into another cable, wall box or multiport... Financial Benefits Corning has carried out extensive modelling of conventional spliced netws compared with preconnectorised solutions. These have been confirmed by operational experience in the field. In any modelling w it is important to clearly define what is and what is not included in the analysis to ensure that a fair comparison can be made. The majority of the saving is derived from the customer connections. Below we will clarify the differences in the customer installation process both pre-connectorised and conventional spiced scenarios Conventional Spliced : i) Fusion splice drop cable at the Netw Access Point end ii) Fusion splice pigtail inside customer premises iii) Fusion splice the next available splitter leg at the Local Convergence point The saving is directly proportional to the take rate (the number of customers who accept the service) the greater the customer take rate the greater the saving. For both single & multi fiber pre-connectorised solutions at the homes-passed stage the pre-connectorised solution has a slightly higher cost than a conventional solution. This would be expected as there is a lot more functionality built into the netw. The break-even take rate is below 10%. Assuming a typical take rate at maturity of 40%,the installed cost comparison is shown here. Note that these figures are representative and will vary according to individual scenarios. Costs include Outside Plant materials and installation costs, but exclude civils, duct and electronics: Pre-Connectorised : i) Connect pre-connectorised drop cable at the Netw Access Point ii) Fit Field Installable OptiSnap connector at the customer premises iii) Connect the next available splitter leg at the Local Convergence Point The time taken will be significantly less the preconnectorised scenario and this can be achieved by installation crews with a similar skill level to CATV installers. The above graph is a typical example a single fiber solution. -
The pre-connectorised OSP solution is a well established product set already widely in use in FTTH builds. Pre-connectorisation is employed in the Local Convergence Point (LCP), in the Netw Access Point (NAP) and at the Customer Premise. (Refer to diagram page1/2) The pre-connectorised solution Single Family Units (SFUs) allows individual customer connections to be made quickly and easily as customers subscribe to services. The NAPs use Multiport Terminals which carry OptiTip TM, environmentally hardened connector adaptors. The drop cables are supplied pre-terminated with OptiTip TM connectors both at the NAP end and a field terminated OptiSnap TM connector is fitted at the customer end. With this system, SFU customer connections can be achieved without the need skilled labour which gives significant operational cost savings over the lifetime of the netw. At the heart of this system lies the IP68 rated OptiTip TM connector which is based on an SC/APC connector but housed inside an environmentally hardened, rugged connector body. This patented design is the first and only optical connector to be used in volume in the external netw and is already proven with over 11 million OptiTip TM ports now installed worldwide in FTTH netws by mid This system is the only FTTH solution where the customer drop can be achieved with a simple plug-and-play approach. Some other pre-connectorised FTTH drop solutions are based on standard indoor connectors which must be mounted inside conventional closures. In this alternative method no splicing is needed to make the drop cable connection to the Netw Access Point, the closure must be opened and the drop cable sealed into the closure each customer connection which takes longer and raises potential reliability concerns. The use of environmentally hardened connectors enables a very clear demarcation between the netw construction and customer connection labour resources which provides operational benefits in the field. Other specialised solutions are available using preferrulised fiber and minicables, but these require specialised installation techniques using skilled labour and costly installation equipment. All single connector designs use APC connectors. Even when current transmission equipment does not require the improved return loss, we believe it is advisable to specify APC connectors to cover future applications. Multi fiber connector designs use the MT technology. Rollout Speed and Skilled Labour Benefits As the size of any FTTH rollout increases, the constraint in the speed of the rollout will focus on the availability of skilled labour. This has been proven to be the case in a number of markets where large FTTH deployments have taken place. Like any resource which is in demand, the cost of that skilled labour will inevitably increase. One key advantage of the pre-connectorised solution is that fewer field based skilled installers with splice capability are required. 4

These are the most common cable construction found in external fiber netws. The construction is well established with hundreds of thousand of km already deployed worldwide. The construction uses a glass reinced central element around which are stranded individual tubes each containing 12 fibers. Each fiber and each tube is individually coloured ease of identification. The cable uses dry core technology where the tubes are surrounded by a water swellable tape which stops water penetration along the core of the cable. The cable is jacketed with Polyethylene, and is marked with industry standard optical fiber coding and metre marks. Accessories base variants: Side walls, product description 6

Distribution Netw The distribution netw covers the links between the LCPs and the MDU buildings or the Netw Access Points (NAP s) Single Family Homes. Again standard, stranded loose tube cables or more specialised cables can be used. Where necessary, UCNCP joint closures are used to enable branching of distribution cables. FRECAP with Evolant MAX Fiber Routing System An Evolant Solutions Product Application The UCNP (product family of Universal Closures) is designed to protect splices and to store excess buffer tube lengths inline to fiber optic cables. The closures are useable with all netw types such as aerial, duct or direct buried netws as well as in all netw levels such as interconnection, branching, distribution or access levels. With Corning s FRECAP closure the installation is faster, easier and more comtable than with all other existing systems. The cable entry is based on a reusable gel-sealing material with independent segments. Additionally the Evolant MAX fiber routing and management system is designed to easily handle bare fibers and provide the optimum flexibility within interconnection, branching, distribution or access levels. Single Circuit and Single Element Management Recommended FTTX Netws Optimized the usage of optical splitter IP 68 Can be used in various environments Direct buried Ducts and manholes Aerial and poles The Evolant MAX is the new Corning Cable Systems standard fiber routing end-management and is commonly used closures, wall boxes, ODFs and cabinets. Features The FRECAP Dome Closure is designed to give the maximum protection the installed netw against environmental influences. FRECAP closures provide the following features: Fast, easy and comtable installation 6 independent segments of cable entries Reusable gel-sealing material Wide range of different cable diameters, 6-25mm Wide range of different cable types No special tools required Up to 720 fibers FREECAP Closure 12
Corning OSP Solutions FTTH Netws An Evolant Solution Close End Cap With our new FRECAP closure, the installation is faster, easier and more comtable than with all other existing systems. The FRECAP has 6 independent segments of cable entries with a reusable gel-sealing material. A wide range of different cable diameters and cable types can be installed, without additional accessories. During the installation of new cables and replacement of installed cables the wing times are dramatically reduced - hence providing a significant CAPEX/OPEX cost saving. Additionally the FRECAP provides the MAX System with increased security. By successfully combining both systems with modern materials, you will get a product with the highest security standards available today. Provides the unique possibility to open single cable-entries without any impact on the cables that are already installed. This combination is unique. No special tools or heating are required installation; dramatically reducing costs and improving safety. Splice Trays The Evolant MAX system can be used with either single circuit (SC) or single element (SE) trays or a mixture of both, in accordance with the netw requirements. Corning recommends the usage of SC trays. The splice trays provide a complete fiber management system with overlength storage, bending control and the possibility of changing the fiber direction. Splice trays can be equipped with numbered and coloured rings; thus providing fast and secure access. Evolant MAX Fiber Routing and Management System The Evolant MAX Fiber routing and management system is built with an aluminum frame and pre-assembled with sixfold guiding units the splice trays. These guiding units are on both sides of the frame or individually stacked with extensive buffer tube storage. When the buffer storage is removed, it is easy to snap in the guiding units to enlarge the splice tray capacity. The fiber itself is guided from the fixed cable end through distribution channels and threaded into the trays directly through the rotation point of the splice tray hinge. Theree it is not necessary to guide the fibers behind the splice trays in order to avoid any crossings outside the splice trays. This patented method guarantees no stress on the fibers and will prevent any attenuation increases in case of future tray access. Splice trays adjust by themselves in the upper position eleminating the need to use additional fixing devices. A minimum bending radius of 30 mm is guaranteed. In a Single Element (SE) Netw, the fibers from one buffer tube are always stored in one single splice tray. Most netw operators are still using 12 fibers per tube. In addition the fibers from up to 6 individual customer drop cables are also guided to one single splice tray. In this case, if maintenance is later required then all the fibers must be taken out of the splice tray. Even though the maintenance w may only involve one customer, the maintenance could affect the other 5 customers connections too. With SC Systems this entire risk is eliminated by only using 1 customer per splice tray. One raster unit is required the SC tray and two are required the SE tray. Two SC trays can be replaced by one SE tray or vice versa. Additional trays optical splitters, water sensors or mechanical splices are available. -

Corning OSP Solutions FTTH Netws An Evolant Solution Multi Fiber Solutions Using pre-connectorised solutions enables fully flexible netws to be built with the minimum of skills and enables rapid correction of customers when required. Application Options Using Only Multi Fiber Products For multi fiber builds utlilising a mixture of all the available pre-connectorised solutions will enable the netw from Central Office all the way to the customer connection to be installed with no or very little splicing. The above diagram shows a number of options building connectivity using only multi fiber connectors having up to 4 fibers per home. Only one product, the OptiSheath MF Sealed Terminal requires splicing. All other products are preconnectorised and installation is by plug n play. For the connection at the customer premise either a pre-connectorised wall box can be used or cables passed through the wall into the customer premise where connection can be by splicing or mechanical connectors. -
Even more flexibility is possible when using a mixture of single and multi fiber pre-connectorised products. Application Options Using Single and Multi Fiber Products In the above diagram you can see it is possible to extend the build possiblities with variations that include both single fiber customer connectivity, combined with the options to deliver higher fiber counts to specific buildings such as small MDUs. All elements are accommodated including the provision of splitters when building a PON netw. Our design engineers are available to discuss all types of netw build. These products are not limited to duct builds (as identified above) but may also be used directly buried and on overhead lines. The opportunities builds on overhead lines may be particularly relevant rural and small installations reducing complexity and the cost involved in civil infrastructure. 16
Corning OSP Solutions FTTH Netws An Evolant Solution Netw Access Point The next part of the connectivity journey takes place via the Netw Access Point. This is the position at the outside plant where Corning Evolant products provide a means to connect the customer drop cables into the netw. Three different pre-connectorised solutions are offered the Netw Access Point : - OptiSheath UCAO Series Sealed Terminals + Multiport - OptiSheath FlexNAP - OptiSheath UltraNAP All solutions are available with both single & multi fiber options. NAP Solution 1 OptiSheath UCAO Series Multiport Terminal and Sealed Terminal The Multiport and sealed terminals provide the interconnection point between the drop cable and the netw. These use the OptiTap environmentally hardened connectors which enable a fast and low skill customer installation to be achieved. The Multiport terminals are supplied with the stub cable pre-installed. The only installation process involved is to install the remote end of the stub cable at the LCP or within a distribution joint. The UCAO OptiSheath closure can be installed onto a high fiber count distribution cable using a loop-through method such that the fibers which are not being dropped off can enter and leave the joint without being broken. A number of Multiport stub cables can also be spliced in the UCAO OptiSheath closure. OptiSheath Multiport Terminals and UCAO OptiSheath closures can be mounted in underground chambers, aerially on poles or hung from messenger wires, mounted on the façade of buildings and even directly buried. Multiport stub cables can be installed in self supporting aerial, duct, façade and direct buried applications. NAP Solution 2 - FlexNAP FlexNAP is a unique and revolutionary solution to the demands of volume FTTH deployments. FlexNAP consists of distribution cables with factory installed tap joints. At each joint, a tether cable of 4 to 12 fibers is spliced into the main cable and the whole joint is sealed and overmoulded in the factory. A single distribution cable can have a number of tap points installed at predetermined points along its length. The FlexNAP cable is delivered complete with the tap points and tether cables wound on the cable drum. Each tether cable has a multifiber environmentally hardened OptiTip connector at its end. The tether cable can be connected directly to a Multiport Terminal in a matter of seconds, thus providing 4 to 12 single fiber connectors which can be used customer drops. The cable is deployed in the normal way in the underground duct. Each duct section is surveyed and each FlexNAP assembly is configured exactly to fit the specific installation it is designed. FlexNAP ordering is achieved using an online configurator which can be linked directly to the Netw Planning platm. NAP Solution 3 - OptiSheath UltraNAP Terminals OptiSheath UltraNAP Terminals are available in two distinct designs to meet a variety of netw applications. Branch-connected terminals (Figure 1) reduce the number of road crossings required and increase capital deferrment opportunities providing an opportunity to minimize overall installed costs. The 12-fiber OptiTip Multi-Fiber Connector stub mates the terminal to the FlexNAP System tether, while two 4-fiber OptiTip Multi-Fiber Connector ports connect to additional preconnectorised OptiSheath MultiPort Terminals. The terminal is also available as a pigtail version which allows to splice back the stub tail end into a distribution closure. -
Four OptiTap Single-Fiber Drop Cable Assembly ports allow individual customer connections. Series-connected terminals allow users to daisy-chain up to three terminals together, all fed from one 12-fiber OptiTip Multi-Fiber Connector. This provides shorter distribution cable lengths and is an ideal solution cul-de-sacs or small areas not easily reached with the primary distribution cable. Series-connected terminals feature one OptiTip Multi-Fiber Connector port (4- or 8-fiber) that feeds the subsequent series-connected terminal or OptiSheath MultiPort Terminal. Each terminal also has four OptiTap Single-Fiber Drop Cable Assembly ports individual connection to four customers. Because of their patent-pending fiber-routing scheme, OptiSheath UltraNAP Terminals offer significant cost deferment possibilities and design flexibility. With future-build situations, the user may initially connect a pre-connectorized OptiSheath MultiPort Terminal to the FlexNAP System. When additional drop connections are needed, UltraNAP Terminals replace the multiport terminal which may then be redeployed as the last leg of the newly installed UltraNAP Terminal series. Preconnectorization allows this to be a quick and easy method of future expansion. Series connected terminals Branch connected terminals FlexNAP and UltraNAP have a number of advantages over conventional solutions: - Speed of installation is significantly faster than conventional - No specialist skill set required at all in the assembly of the distribution netw - All joints made in a factory environment to a controlled quality system and supplied fully tested which assures that installed systems will w first time with no field testing. - Multiport Terminals only need to be deployed as they are needed which ensures the lowest initial installation cost. 18
Corning OSP Solutions FTTH Netws An Evolant Solution OptiSheath MultiPort Terminal An Evolant Solutions Product Product Description Description The OptiSheath MultiPort Terminal is designed use in outside plant fiber access netws. This innovative terminal provides sealed environmental protection and fast, easy incremental connection of subscriber drop cables while increasing deployment velocity. Its reliability and flexibility make it the ideal choice netw access point terminals in fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) deployments. The OptiSheath MultiPort Terminal is available in four configurations: four, six, eight and 12 OptiTap Cable Assembly connector ports. The integrated preterminated cable stub is available in increments of 25 meter and in both dielectric and toneable cable designs. 29 Corning OSP Solutions FTTH Netws An Evolant Solution OptiTip Multi Fiber Drop Cable Assembly An Evolant Solutions Product Speed of Installation The OptiTip Drop Cable design allows connections to be made much more rapidly than with traditional field termination methods, such as splicing or field connectors - up to three or four times faster per connection. That s because splicing is basically a hand-crafted operation, permed by specialists who w with system elements individually (e.g. aligning fiber cores), using expensive fusion splicers and many components, while OptiTip connections involve joining two pre-configured parts with no equipment required. The potential errors, including improper seals, misalignment and polarity issues, is eliminated because installers do not need to craft each connection onsite. Also, pinned and unpinned OptiTip connections can only be joined in one way and do not require an adapter to mate together like other connector styles. Moves and changes are easier to perm as well. Cost-effectiveness Fast field connection can help reduce costs several ways. The lack of splicing with OptiTip Drop Cables means FTTH netws can be deployed without skilled, specialised technicians - giving contractors the option of taking on additional telecommunications jobs without adding specialists or investing in additional training. End-users can use their own staff to deploy systems using OptiTip Drop Cables, thereby reducing the number of personnel required compared with conventional system installation and drastically reducing the total time required the installation.
