3 Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) What is it? Use computers to solve the equations which predict the fluid dynamics in an environment. Over the past 30 years CFD techniques have been extensively and successfully applied in advanced technology, such as the nuclear and the aerospace industries. Recently the concept of tailoring CFD software, specifically for data center heating and ventilation applications, has made it possible to apply these methods to provide fast and accurate results to designers under severe time and budgetary constraints. 3
4 CFD Modeling Services EcoPOD AHU Design Optimization Superdome Unit Building Level Exterior CFD Modeling Data Center Level Equipment Level (PCA, server, rack, AHU) HP POD Heat Pipe Thermal Analysis 4
5 CFD Modeling Equipment Modeling can examine: Examine heat transfer and fluid flow behavior of IC packages, printed circuit boards and complete electronic systems Helps design teams to perform easy validation of design modifications before building any physical prototypes. Data Center CFD Modeling can examine: The thermodynamic characteristics of the entire Data Center Room/plenum pressure, airflow distribution and temperature gradients Effective placement of air conditioning units Monitoring of air conditioning performance (provisioning) Impact of obstructions to both under-floor and above-floor airflows Placement and cooling potential of perforated airflow tiles or grilles Power consumption and thermal load of individual racks 5
6 CFD Modeling Exterior CFD Modeling: Uses the same tools for internal CFD modeling taking into consideration wind direction, velocity profiles and temperature in relation to the building exteriors, air inlets, air outlets and generators exhaust Benefits: Determine optimum Data Center building orientation in regards to wind direction; validate the exterior building design to mitigate hot air recirculation. Conceptual Design Validation: Development of new data center designs based on industry best practices, relevant standards (ASHRAE, TIA, IEEE, NFPA, etc.) and HP s experience Use of CFD tools to model the proposed design or validate existing designs Generate requirements, technical specifications and/or recommendations for the successful development of the new data center. 6
