2 History and Medical Overview The East Anglian region covers a vast area, much of it rural. With more than 5,000 square miles, or 11% of the total area of England, it contains some of the country s most isolated terrain. The west side of the region is most densely populated, and includes the city of Cambridge and its University Hospital and major trauma centre. In the east, Norwich University Hospital is a centre of excellence. Our two helicopter operations are based close to these hospitals at Cambridge and Norwich Airports. The majority of our call-outs are for major trauma cases, but there has been an increasing trend to attend medical incidents, particularly cardiac arrests. We now take patients to cardiac centres at Papworth, Norfolk and Norwich, Harefield and Basildon for PCI. Secondary emergency transfers, although currently not a major part of the workload, are expected to increase, as integration of services across the region improves. The Charity was founded in 2000, and covers counties of Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire. The service started in January 2001, operating one day a week; the current service operates two helicopters 365 days a year, including night operations from the Cambridge base, covering a population of 2.9 million people. The service works in association with the East of England Ambulance Service Trust, who provide Critical Care Paramedics to the Charity. We currently operate two EC135 aircraft, provided by Bond Aviation Service and we are awaiting delivery of an EC145T2 by the end of The basic crew configuration includes pilot, critical care paramedic and doctor. Alastair Wilson joined the Charity as Medical Director in March 2014 and is supported by two senior consultants (Pam Chrispin and Jeremy Mauger). The Charity s clinical lead is Dr Tom Hurst and lead for research is Professor Tim Harris. We have a number of highly experienced associate doctors who regularly work with us, and we are part of the PHEM training programme, appointing pre-hospital emergency medicine trainees on an annual basis. 3 Pre-hospital Emergency Medicine Physician 1) Information & Duties of the Post Anaesthetic, Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine Consultants will be considered. Essential and desirable qualifications are outlined in the Person Specification appended. Posts are available with East Anglia Air Ambulance at Cambridge and Norwich Airports. Successful applicant will be attached to both bases, but will work from one base predominantly. All posts provide pre-hospital experience in the care of major trauma and medical emergencies. Accreditation Successful applicants must have a CCST in their principal specialty, as well as a recognised Pre-hospital care diploma. Successful candidates will also be expected to have at least six months previous helicopter medical experience in the UK. Duties Provide pre-hospital emergency care at consultant level via the helicopter or rapid response vehicles, working with critical care paramedics. Participate in the rota for prehospital operations for both aircraft and rapid response vehicles at both bases (including night duties from Cambridge). Undertake research and audit. Regular training and case review. Attend monthly Clinical Governance Day and associated meetings. Participate in clinical governance, clinical effectiveness programme. Maintain the clinical databases (Hemsbase) and assist with trauma scoring and outcome measurement analysis. Participate in the clinical governance programme. Follow up of all patients on shared Database with CUH. Maintain and develop SOPs Ensure incident forms are completed and submitted. Participate in Risk Management across the organisation Assist in the development of the regional trauma system. Development of clinical and non clinical SOPs. Review existing SOPs. Maintain currency and excellence with medical skills and procedures. Maintain regular statutory training, and CPD, Yearly appraisal and revalidation with GMC Teach medical and non-medical staff within and outside the Air Ambulance / NHS trust. Teach medical staff and paramedics. Liaise with our partner trusts (EHAAT, EEAST and Magpas) Provide teaching and training for medical students on special study modules and electives. Liaise with other agencies outwith the Trust Participate in fund raising Regular fitness training. Management of major trauma in prehospital arena.

This will be coordinated with the employing hospital. (These rates are subject to amendment from time to time by national agreement.) Due to the nature of the work in this post, it is exempt from the provision of section 4 (2) of the Rehabilitation of offenders Act 1974, by virtue of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exemption Order 1975).
