L-32 DURATION 3 years 180 CAMPUS Udine ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS High school graduate students are allowed to be admitted to the courses. Similar foreign qualifications will be also considered for admission. Basic scientific knowledge of mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology is required for admission. Provided that the course does not envisage enrolment restrictions, educational prerequisites will be evaluated by an entrance examination aimed at verifying the flair of candidate students to successfully undertake the course. Deficiencies in any scientific area must be recovered in due time. Details on the examination features are available on the Faculty Web site. GENERAL OUTCOMES AND EDUCATIONAL AIMS Ecosystems are complex systems under increasing ecological, social and economic pressure at different scales. On a local level, exploitation of biological resources, changes in hydrological and other environmental conditions and different stakeholder interests, are important. On a global level, sustainable management has to deal with climate change, resource degradation, and the demand for biodiversity and ecotourism. The Degree Program in Environmental Sciences is designed for students who want to take up the challenge of learning innovative methods to monitor and manage the state of the environment, and sustainable solutions to the threats facing it. The Program has its roots in natural, technological and economic sciences. It firstly aims at providing students the basic tools to recognize the elements of biosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, and the atmosphere; it also gives students insight into the causes and the characteristics of pollution and degradation of the natural environment, and the effects on human beings, other organisms and ecosystems. Using an interdisciplinary approach, students learn to develop analytical tools and models, but also technologies and economic instruments to prevent and control environmental and sustainability issues. JOB OPPORTUNITIES Graduates should find jobs in many different organizations at intermediate responsibility levels as a consultant or development worker at engineer- and consultancy bodies, governmental institutions, regional and local authorities. Professional jobs include: monitoring, classification, analysis, and management of natural and artificial ecosystems; analysis and monitoring of environmental systems and processes aimed at improving environmental quality; management of parks, recreational lands, wildlife reserves, educational sites. COURSES The standard length of the Program is three years; to obtain the degree, students must collect 180 credits. The courses are organized in semesters (October-January, March-July) during which students follow lessons, practicals, and seminars. Examinations take place in February and July-September. 3 Second Cycle (Graduate) Degree Programme in Environmental Science and Technology, Cl. LM-75 DURATION 2 years 120 CAMPUS Udine and Trieste Starting from the academic year , the Master degree in Environmental Science and Technology is offered jointly by the Universities of Udine (Faculty of Agricultural Science) and Trieste (Faculty of Sciences). The University of Udine organizes the administration of the course. The first year of the Master course is held at the University of Udine, with the participation the University of Trieste teaching staff, while during the second year the course is split into two curricula. The first (Territory Management) is given at the same University of Udine; the second (Environmental Analysis and Monitoring), is held at the University of Trieste. The Master degree is jointly provided by the two Universities. ACCESS TO THE COURSE REQUISITES To be admitted to the MsSci course a First Cycle student having a degree obtained from an Italian University should have one of the following curricular requisites: a) First Cycle (Undergraduate) Degree Program in Environmental Science, Cl. L-32 ex D.M. 270/2004, or Cl. 27 ex D.M. 509/1999. b) at least 82 credits (CFU) gained as from the following table: SSD CFU min INF/01, ING-INF/05, MAT/01 - MAT/09, SECS-S/01, SECS-S/02 9 FIS/01 - FIS/08 6 CHIM/01, CHIM/02, CHIM/03, CHIM/06 9 BIO/01, BIO/02, BIO/03, BIO/04, BIO/05, BIO/06, BIO/07, BIO/08, BIO/09, BIO/10, BIO/11, BIO/16, BIO/18, BIO/19, GEO/01, GEO/02, GEO/03, GEO/04, GEO/05, GEO/06, GEO/07, GEO/08, GEO/09, GEO/10, GEO/11, GEO/12, AGR/01, AGR/02, AGR/03, AGR/04, AGR/05, AGR/06, AGR/07, AGR/08, AGR/10, AGR/11, AGR/12, AGR/13, AGR/14, AGR/16, AGR/19, 58 AGR/20, CHIM/01, CHIM/02, CIM/03, CHIM/04, CHIM/06, CHIM/12, ICAR/06, ICAR/15, ICAR/20, IUS/01, IUS/06, IUS/09, IUS/10, IUS/13, IUS/14, M-GGR/01, M-GGR/02, M- STO/05, MED/42, SECS-P/01, SECS-P/02, SECS-P/06, SPS/08 If necessary, curricular integration should be obtained before the individual skill test. This test is aimed at evaluating the individual capabilities and knowledge in graduate students having degrees not included in the Cl. L-32 ex D.M. 270/2004, or Cl. 27 ex D.M. 509/1999. Students graduated in Environmental Sciences Courses in foreign Universities or Colleges will be examined by a Commission with the aim to test their previous skills and knowledge and to recommend required integrations in specific disciplines. GENERAL OUTCOMES AND EDUCATIONAL AIMS The MsSci degree in Environmental Science and Technology (STAT) has the main objective to communicate knowledge by providing a varied learning experience for students in a research-led environment, equipping students with a curiosity-driven and deep understanding of their subject, and a critical approach and skills relevant to their future careers. At the end of their MsSci course, professionals should be able to operate with a multidisciplinary approach on the management of complex systems aimed at their planning, monitoring and coordinating through correct and innovative techniques. The first curriculum (Territory Management) is aimed at increasing the knowledge and the management capabilities of the human use of land. Land use is continuously modified with the aim to obtain products and/or benefits obtained through land management activities carried out by humans to produce those products and benefits. Land use and land management practices have major impacts on natural resources and ecological and technological knowledge can be used to develop solutions for natural resource management issues. An excess of pressure on ecosystem leads to over-utilization of the land resources and the result has often heavy consequences on social and economic segments of the local population and destruction of the
4 same ecosystems. A long-term quality of the land for human use should be based on techniques for the planning and management of land resources that is integrated and holistic and where land users are central. This will ensure, among other goals, the conservation of ecosystems of high biodiversity value. The second curriculum (Environmental Analysis and Monitoring) is dedicated to a more specific issue, i.e. the monitoring of the environment through the analysis of its biotic and abiotic components. Environmental analysis is based on the use of analytical chemistry and other techniques to study ecosystem status and the possibility of mitigation of possible risks or damages to the environment. The purpose of the curriculum is in particular to study, monitor and control levels of degradation of the soils, atmosphere, rivers and other specific settings. The MsSci course aims at reaching its objectives adopting teaching methods based on an active didactic approach with large space to practical activities, stages and project managed by the students. JOB OPPORTUNITIES In general environmental science requires new goods and services, creating many job opportunities. Such opportunities in this field are good and MsSci graduate should be able find jobs in many different organizations at full responsibility levels as a consultant, policy maker, researcher, development worker or project manager in any part of the world. Job possibilities can be found at engineer- and consultancy bodies, NGO's, governmental institutions, universities and research institutes. In particular they should be able to work as environmental science and engineering experts, outdoor and environmental educators or parks and reserves managers, international consultants in environmental studies and assessment. COURSES The standard length of the Program is two years; to obtain the degree, students must collect 120 credits. The courses are organized in semesters (October-January, March-July) during which students follow lessons, practicals, and seminars. Examinations take place in February and July-September.
