9 ECSEL Austria: Common Fields of Interest 1. Sensors Modules Highly integrated sensor modules you do not see them, feel them, smell them, but they are there to generate data. They are operating in a self sufficient way and just forward the information securely that they are generating. Miniaturization and ideal 3 dimensional packages are keen. 2. Materials in Electronics Ideal combination of different materials used for electronic components are challenging further miniaturization of electronics and/or are influencing reliability. Decent knowledge about material and material combination, surfaces and interfaces are keen to proceed development in the upcoming years. Current standards and solutions have to be challenged and redefined. 9
10 ECSEL Austria: Common Fields of Interest 3. Power Electronics Energy consumption of electronic devices are currently limiting their use. New high energy efficient electronic modules with high power density are required for devices in vehicles, energy supply, etc. in future 4. High Frequency Electronics High frequency communication for Smart Systems from 5 GHz onwards including low power high frequency communication. 10
11 ECSEL Austria: Common Fields of Interest 5. Automated/Autonomous Vehicles Enhanced automation of vehicles (trains, cars, trucks, ships, airplanes etc.) will be one major enabler to master the Grand Societal Challenges (CO2 reduction, aging society, traffic safety & throughput) Disruptive technology: impact on markets, people s style of life, allowing to totally change transportation and connect different transport modes to optimize cost, time and reduce environmental impact. NOT ONLY CARS!! 6. Embedded Intelligence and Software Creates the added value for everyday applications! Integration into infrastructure, Connectivity Service oriented approach, Safety & Security Local and global optimization within SoS 11
12 Example Autonomous Driving Including all common fields of interest: Seminconductor HW, Smart System Integration, Cyber-Physical Systems, Intelligence and SW, Infrastructure Integration Environment Sensing - complex sensor processing (computer vision, radar, coverage of all critical scenes), data fusion and control functions Car2-X Communication communication protocols, delays / degradation / intrusions / localization / privacy violation Scene Understanding - situation interpretation, model based reasoning Planning and Control - decision making, complex & heterogeneous behaviour Adaptivity and Learning - unforseeable behaviour modification 12
