4 Towards leadership in digital platforms for industry Different types of platforms Organisational, technology, operational Open vs. proprietary Sector-specific (vertical) vs. cross-cutting (horizontal) Value creation: "with" the platform and/or "on" the platform Scale: from "niche" platform to broad consumer platforms Platforms on which value is created on and across levels: Well-being, home, cars (user perspective) Analytics, design & simulation Cloud and web applications (free from vendor-lock-in) Middleware: embedded OSs, IoT, autonomous systems building blocks, Systems of Systems, security frameworks, Scale-up our efforts by pan-european collaboration ICT PPPs: ICT Platforms + large scale demonstrators (IoT, ECSEL, FoF, ) Platforms for the manufacturing sector from cradle to grave Platform interoperability & standards in Digital Single Market package Platforms supported and adopted across MSs and regions 4

5 EU became world leader in highly reliable safety-critical systems Strategic programme effort of ARTEMIS and WP (>> 100M ) Creating a business ecosystem around the Cesar tool platform for professional systems design Now in CRYSTAL: industrialisation, large scale take-up Some detailed successes: AUTOSAR embedded ICT platform for the car used by all EU, most US, many other manufacturers TTTech (growing beyond SME size) Time triggered technologies used worldwide in avionics, SYSGO (bought by Thales to protect EU assets) 25% growth/yr based on their real-time Operating System ESTEREL (now ANSYS) SCADA suite used by 230 companies in 27 countries Three most successful SMEs (total ): Revenue growth: 13 M /yr 65M /yr (average growth 17.5%/yr) Jobs: employees EU investment in FP7: ~13M in total 5

7 FIWARE Platform Components FIWARE is a set of 37 software components essential for developing any kind of innovative Internet services. They are package in 10 groups for easy use by developers. Prime sectors are smart cities, creative industry, health manufacturing or agrifood. All of FIWARE is open source and royalty free available today to anyone on The FIWARE ecosystem and community provides all what is needed for users, developers and public sectors actors to start using FIWARE

How important is interoperability between platforms and standardisation? What are the 1 5 key platforms EU industry should agree on? What should we (= industry) agree and co-operate on what should we compete on? How could we organise ourselves? What additional role should public institutions play? How should Europe and its actors position themselves vis-à-vis initiatives like the Industrial Internet Consortium? 12
