INTERNET OF THINGS EUROPE Internet of Things 2010 Conference 29-1 Nov/Dez 2010, Tokyo Workshop Session: From the INTRAnet of Things to the INTERnet of Things Establishing a common architecture for the IoT

INTERNET OF THINGS EUROPE Overview 1. Introduction, Presentation IoT-A / IoT-I, Sebastian Lange, VDI/VDE-IT 2. IERC Cluster, Peter Friess, European Commission 3. Noboru Koshizuka, YRP UNL, University of Tokyo 4. Stephan Haller, SAP 5. Niko Hossain, Fraunhofer IML

VISIONS OF THE FUTURE IoT can contribute to 3

A SMART HOME A smart Home where no energy is wasted, where lighting is efficient, where interactive walls are able to display useful information, as well as pictures or art, videos of far-away friends or relatives; A home environment that suits ones needs, whether one is reading a book or watching a movie; where all household appliances talk to each other and help solving problems, instead of creating new ones. 4

AN INTELLIGENT TRANSPORT SYSTEM An intelligent Transport system where public transport and traffic flow is seamless, where private and public vehicles interact, choose the best path avoiding congestion and preserving the environment, and where multimodal transport is smooth and easy; where parking is not a problem any longer and where alternative means of transport are convenient. 5

A PRODUCTIVE BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT A productive Business environment where offices become smart and interactive and where factories relay production related data in real-time; where remote face-to face meetings are established through holograms, where documents are no longer just paper, but are fully integrated in the work flow, can be traced and automatically linked with additional online information. 6

AN EFFICIENT LOGISTICS AND RETAIL ENVIRONMENT An efficient Logistics and Retail environment where safety and environmental concerns are ubiquitously embedded in all the processes; consumers are supported to have a healthy and convenient shopping experience; where traceability of products is a given standard with access to all relevant product information including quality and sustainability measures. 7

A SAFE HEALTH MONITORING SYSTEM A safe Health-Monitoring system, always connected, making use of non-intrusive techniques such as sweat and breath analysis, preventing serious illnesses by adapting the environment and by selecting appropriate drugs and diet; where fitness is tailored to one s needs automatically in order to achieve the desired target without injuries and in accordance with one s mood and environment. 8

Internet of Things Architecture Current status Fragmented architectures, no coherent unifying concepts, solutions exist only for application silos No coherent approaches to implement the IoT have been proposed, yet 9 Establishing a common architecture for the Folie IoT 9

Internet of Things Architecture Current status Many island solutions do exist (RFID, Sensor nets, etc.) Little cross-sectorial re-use of technology and exchange of knowledge In essence, there are only INTRAnets of Things existing Sport & Leisure Industry & Production Mobility Home & Health 10 Establishing a common architecture for Folie the IoT 10

Some efforts to establish IoT implementations??? Where is the commonality? How to become interoperable? How to make use of it? 11

IoT-A the EU FP7 IoT flagship project strives to establish and evolve a federating architectural reference model for the Future Internet of Things 12

Project Duration: (3 Years) Project EC Contribution: 12 Mio. EUR Consortium: 19 Partners from 8 European countries Contact: / 13

IoT-A Objectives Establishing the necessary foundation for realising global Internet of Things principles, Providing guidelines for the technical design of its protocols, interfaces, and algorithms, Building the enabling architectural framework for the IoT, Federating heterogeneous IoT technologies into a homogeneous IoT fabric 14 Establishing a common architecture for Folie the IoT 14

IoT-A Objectives Removing the barriers of deployment and widescale acceptance of the IoT Demonstrating the usability of the IoT architecture in different domains and the added benefit of cross domain interaction ; 15 Establishing a common architecture for Folie the IoT 15

Means of implementation 1. Setting up of an architectural reference model for the interoperability of Internet-of-Things systems, 2. Outlining principles and guidelines for the technical design of its protocols, interfaces, and algorithms 3. Establishing corresponding mechanism for its efficient integration into the service layer of the FI 16 Establishing a common architecture for Folie the IoT 16

Means of implementation 4. Providing a protocol suite based on open protocols centred around a narrow waste 5. Defining a novel resolution infrastructure, allowing scalable look up and discovery of Internet-of-Things resources, entities of the real world, and their associations; 6. Building novel device platform components; 7. Implementing real-life use cases demonstrating the benefits of the developed architecture. 17 Establishing a common architecture for Folie the IoT 17

The challenge: the IoT hourglass How does the IoT Hourglass look like? The Internet hourglass 18

Spiral Development IERC Projects Requirements Stakeholder Group DRAFT architecture reference model UPDATED architecture reference model FINAL architecture reference model Stakeholder Group FI Architecture Group MANA Development Validation 19

Become part of it Want to get involved and contribute to IoT-A? The IoT-A partners need you! Become a IoT-A stakholder! Help define the requirements for the architectural reference model! Contribute to the assessment and validation of the architecture! Participate in the setup of use-cases! Participate in 4 to 5 workshops! 20

Become part of it How to become a stakeholder? 1. Apply on the IoT-A website 2. Applicants will be informed upon selection by the board 3. Join the IoT-A partners and make IoT happen! 21

IoT-A is looking for Stakeholders from Health / Wellbeing Transport / Automotive Industrial / Manufacturing / Maintenance Smart Buildings / Facility Management / Asset Management Security Entertainment 22

IoT-i - The Internet of Things Initiative Federating the IoT community in Europe and world wide Elaborating the next Roadmaps Facilitating R&D coordination Improoving governance of IoT Higher level perspective than IoT-A 23

How to get involved Affiliation is the process by which YOU can be part of the IOT-I community Open to all, but Expected are Commitment Active contribution to IOT-I work and objectives Answering on-line questionnaire to get in the IOT Community Data Base Register at 24
