The Department takes an active role in MOBBIG (Communication Network of Heads of Department of ) in Turkey and work in good collaboration with the Chamber of Architects in both TRNC and Turkey.
3 About the Program The renewed four year integrative curriculum of the Department has been designed with an understanding that it gives opportunities to students to evaluate the built environment, design, and build in modern project studios. The department offers a flexible and frequently updated timetable which enables the students to take elective courses from different departments. The main focus of the educational approach is on the architectural design studio augmented by professional theory courses. The interactive studio, as the proper arena for critical thinking, provides a milieu for addressing social, technical and environmental issues around an architectural project, through the re-creation and discussion of the spatial dimension of the built environment. The department continuously pursues opportunities for national and international accreditation and has applied for MIAK and NAAB accreditations. Career Opportunities and Graduates Graduates of the Department of who have the privilege of being a graduate of an institution with EAAE membership find opportunities for work in public or private institutions, or work as freelance architects. Some get into the type of work concerning a wide range of functions from designing shop-windows or fair stands, to more implementation oriented work in construction firms. 4 Faculty of Teaching / Learning The aim of the program is to provide different sectors of industry with creative, multi-dimensional, entrepreneur and leader industrial designers who have a strong technological background, high managerial skills, knowledge of manufacturing and marketing techniques, and sensitive to environmental issues. The program of the department is a student-centered program with a multi-disciplinary nature which allows students to develop themselves in their own fields of interest through various elective courses. The main philosophy of education in the department is to create a friendly and warm environment where students have a chance to learn to design through firsthand experience. Active collaboration with industry through common projects is another important feature of the program. The Faculty offers a common Freshmen year program for all departments which gives the students an opportunity of internal transfer between different departments. Industrial Design Undergraduate Program Industrial Design is a rapidly developing profession. Our program is at international standards and has been designed in such a way that students are given the opportunity to improve their skills and specific talents. Today the role of skillful Industrial designers in development of different fields of industry is undeniable. Department of Industrial Design, which offers an array of elective courses and various technical facilities, brings the opportunity for young people to be part of the challenging world of design and work in different branches of industry. Departmental Facilities Besides the modern design studios, there are three wellequipped CAD labs, one material, one environmental, one model making, one ceramics and one photo lab, available to all students in the Faculty. In addition, a very well equipped manufacturing techniques lab and a materials lab at other faculties of the University are available for the Industrial Design students. Besides the rich collection of books and periodicals about various subjects related to design in the central library of the University, students can use an archive of printed materials on design available in the Faculty. Activities / Major Accomplishments Students of the Department are encouraged to participate actively in national and international design competitions. This is believed to be a very important issue in the professional development and motivation of the students. Our students have demonstrated success in some of these competitions. An example of these is the awards won by students in national student design competitions organized by BOSCH Company and ETMK in two successive years (2007 and 2008). Active collaborations with the industry and technical trips not only raise the educational standards at our department but also ensure that our students are ready for the professional world. The Department establishes close relationships with the national industries and design centers and organizes technical trips to let students to contact various companies, designers in the market and design studios.
5 About the Program All students of the Faculty of take common courses during their first year of study. After this foundation year, they begin their professionoriented education. Industrial Design studio courses are the backbone of our education. In these courses students learn to create solutions to various industrial design problems. Research is an indispensable part of this process. The theoretical courses in the curriculum create a strong support for these studio courses. Various courses on computer assisted design courses and presentation skills equip the students with specific skills regarding industrial design. Elective courses are another group of courses in the program allowing students to specialize in various fields of industrial design according to their own choices. Career Opportunities and Graduates The curriculum is designed to cover a wide range of disciplines related to industrial design. Graduates can work as designers in design offices or companies, RD centers, etc., as academicians at universities, at national planning institutes, and also as design or production managers in industry. Department helps its graduates in finding jobs through its close connections with different sectors. As industrial design covers a very wide range of subjects, many of our graduates prefer to continue their education to a higher level and specialize in a specific area either at the Faculty of or at different national or international institutions.
