Architectural Education in Saudi Arabia: Chronological Development, Curricula Models, Position Statements, Prepared by Ashraf Salama, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Architecture King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals KFUPM This outline highlights major developments of Architectural Education in Saudi Arabia. It acts a brief that frames the way in which architectural education in KSA was developed, offers basic information about curriculum areas, position statements, and architecture program objectives.
1. King Saud University, KSU - Riyadh College of Architecture and Planning KSU was the pioneering institution in establishing architectural education the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia 1967 The first program established was under an Architecture Engineering Department and was part of the College of Engineering 1968 The department was renamed and became Architecture Department; students had to study engineering courses for three years before enrollment in Architecture program. This was the case until /84 The department was transformed into the College of Architecture and Planning that housed two departments: Architecture and Building Science Department Planning and Urban Studies Department 2002 The Planning and Urban Studies Department was renamed and became Urban Planning Department 1983 Two graduate programs were established: Masters of Architecture and Building Science Masters of Urban Planning 2002 A Ph.D. Program in Architecture was approved 2003 Enrollment started in the Ph.D. Program The curriculum is based on the Bauhaus generated American model where students are enrolled for two years in general studies that aim at developing their basic design skills, drawing abilities, while assimilating theoretical knowledge related to the built environment disciplines. In the beginning of the third year, students start their specialized studies either in Architecture or in building science. The curriculum places emphasis on design pedagogy which is supplemented with history and theory courses. The overall program objectives are to: Provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary for the practice of architecture. Prepare graduates who are able to contribute the development and improvement of the Saudi local environment. Contribute to the knowledge building by conducting research that concerns itself with the local traditions and the heritage of the kingdom.
2. King Faisal University, KFU - Dammam College of Architecture and Planning 1975/76 The College of Architecture and Planning was established and housed three departments: Architecture Department Urban and Regional Planning Department Landscape Architecture Department 1982/83 The Interior Design Department for FEMALES was established 1984/85 The Building Science and Technology Department was established 1995/96 The Interior Design Department for MALES was established 2001/02 The Building Science and Technology Department was renamed and became Construction Engineering Department 1985 The Master of Landscape Architecture Program was established 1988 The Master of Architecture Program was established 1988 The Master of Urban and Regional Planning Program was established 2001/02 The Master of Construction Engineering Program was established 2004 The Department of Urban and Regional Planning has prepared a Ph.D. Program that was submitted to the University Council and is in the approval process The curriculum is based explicitly on the Bauhaus generated American model. College programs are divided into three stages: Introductory Stage; a one year dedicated to offering students basic science, basic design, and the development of their imagination and conceptual skills Intermediate Stage; a three year stage where students are specialized in one of the core disciplines of the college: architecture, urban and regional planning, landscape architecture, interior design, or construction engineering. Professional Stage; a one year of professional studies that include courses in professional practice, building economics, and the graduation project. The architecture program aims at: Developing students artistic and conceptual skills. Developing students awareness of different processes involved in the creation of built environments. Preparing future generations of architects who are able to propose design and planning solutions for local problems, assimilate environmental and technological factors that influence the building industry, and manage the design and execution of buildings.
3. King Abdul Aziz University, KAAU - Jeddah College of Environmental Design 1976 The School of Environmental Design was established under the College of Engineering and housed two programs: Architecture and Planning Landscape Architecture 1998 The School became independent of the Engineering College and was renamed to be College of Environmental Design consisting of three separate departments: Architecture Department Urban and Regional Planning Department Landscape Architecture Department 1996 The Department of Urban and Regional Planning has established the Master of Planning Program No Ph.D. Program is offered or under preparation The curriculum is based on a hybrid model that started with the Bauhaus generated American model, then transformed after series of developments into a unique program. There are university requirements, college requirements, and departmental requirements. Most of the university requirements are required in the first year. The architecture program has recently implemented a vertical studio system where students of different years and levels are enrolled in a studio with a team of instructors that continues with them from studio 1 up to the senior level studio. Vertical studios have themes where all projects relate to that theme (environment and development; community and society, etc.) The overall objectives of the program are to: Prepare architects who are able to take the responsibilities they are to have after their graduation. Develop the students intellectual awareness of the physical and spiritual factors constraints and their impact on the designed environment. Cope with the accelerated advancements in building tectonics with reference to Saudi Arabia and the region. Develop scientific and exploratory research with findings that contribute to the creation of local architectural and planning typologies.
4. King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, KFUPM - Dhahran College of Environmental Design 1975 The Department of Architecture Engineering was established as part of the College of Engineering 1980 The Department of Architecture Engineering became the core of the College of Environmental Design 1980 The College of Environmental Design was established and housed three departments: Architecture Engineering Department Architecture Department City and Regional Planning Department 1994 The Department of City and Regional Planning closed its undergraduate program 1984 The Construction Engineering and Management Department was established as part of the College of Environmental Design to offer two Master Programs Master of Science in Construction Engineering Management Master of Construction Engineering Management 1987 The Architecture Engineering Department established its Master Program in Architecture Engineering 1991 The City and Regional Planning Department stablished its Master Program in City and Regional Planning 2004/05 The Department of Architecture established its Master Program in Built Environment Studies and Design Computing. Program in under approval process The Construction Engineering and Management Department has prepared a Ph.D. Program in Engineering Management that was submitted to ther University Council for approval The curriculum is based on current American models with an orientation year as a first year, and then students are enrolled in the architecture program. Emphasis is placed on design studios and IT based design applications. The program was assessed by a NAAB team and went through the assessment process, similar to that of Architecture programs in the US. Instruction is in English. In 2004, the ARC department has identified the following outcomes for graduating students: An ability to conceptualize and coordinate designs, addressing social, cultural, environmental and technological aspects of architecture; An ability to recognize the dialectic relationship between people and the built environment in the region An ability to apply and integrate computer technology in design processes and products; An ability to utilize cutting edge building technology in design; An ability to apply visual and verbal communication skills at various stages of architectural design and project delivery processes An ability to critically analyze building designs; An ability to employ architectural research methods including data collection, analysis to evaluate and improve the built environment; An ability to work collaboratively with various design teams involved in the building industry An ability to recognize diversity of needs, values, behavioral norms, social patterns as they relate to the creation of the built environment.
5. Umm Al Quara University, Makkah, UQU College of Engineering and Islamic Architecture 1983 The Department of Engineering and Islamic Architecture was established as part of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences 1989 The Department was renamed and became Department of Islamic Architecture and became part of College of Engineering and Islamic Architecture No Master Program is offered or under preparation No Ph.D. Program is offered or under preparation The curriculum is based on a hybrid model influenced by the structure of architecture programs in Egypt. Emphasis is placed on Islamic architecture, Islamic cities, conservation of historic districts, etc. The program objectives are to: Prepare a generation of architects and planners who are aware of Islamic Sharia a and are able to design and shape the cities and buildings for Muslim societies.
