3 What is interior architecture? Interior architecture is a discipline rooted in the idea that the creation of interior space has an intrinsic creative allegiance to architectural thinking. It emphasizes ideas of spatial design over stylistic affinities and explores how architectural space can be artfully and practically enhanced for human use. It embraces scale, proportion, geometry, light, materials, textures and color as opportunities for improving everyday experience and for connecting with the human spirit. Standing at the nexus of architecture, interior design and environmental conservation, the practice of interior architecture is dedicated to creating innovative solutions for a sustainable future. 2 On Cover: Student Thesis Project by Pascha Goodwin

4 A Collaborative Program The Master of Interior Architecture (MIA) is a professional degree that is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation. The primary goal for the Master of Interior Architecture program is to provide an opportunity for individuals with a minimum of a bachelor s degree to pursue a rigorous program of part time study that prepares them to enter the field of interior design incorporating the highest standards of professional practice. The program particularly serves career-change students seeking to fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming interior design professionals. This program is offered collaboratively by the Department of Architecture in the 3 College of Environmental Design at the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and the Architecture and Interior Design program at the University of California, Los Angeles Extension. At Cal Poly Pomona, the program is offered through the College of the Extended University. Most of the classes are taught at UCLA Extension facilities in Westwood in Los Angeles. The MIA program requires 63 units of academic work that may be completed in four quarters of full-time study. For students with no previous study in interior architecture, up to 82 quarter units of preparatory work may be required. 7 Building a new paradigm in design There is no one best formula for producing great design. Interior architecture offers an open framework for individuals interested in both interior design and architecture to explore practical and critical issues that draw on the knowledge bases of both disciplines. Designers need to be critical, flexible, intuitive, rigorous, innovative, collaborative, analytical and playful. In a broad sense they should be committed to improving the quality of life, increasing productivity, and protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the public. 6

8 An inspiring sense of place As a global center for design innovation, Los Angeles provides a rich urban context for the study of all aspects of contemporary design. A place of daring experimentation by such early innovators as Wright, Neutra, Schindler and Eames, Los Angeles has continued to push the boundaries of modern design through the work of such internationally known practitioners as Gehry, Mayne, Meier, Gensler and Starck. From historical masterpieces and iconic landmarks to the celebrated works of many emerging firms, Los Angeles is an ideal city in which to both understand the past and glimpse the future. Most Collaborative Program classes are offered at the stunning 7 UCLA Extension facility located on Westwood Boulevard just south of the UCLA main campus in Westwood Village. In addition, students have opportunities to take some Collaborative Program classes that are held on the main campus, as well as in other locations in the Los Angeles area. The instructors are all dedicated practicing professionals, the curriculum is CIDA-accredited and first rate, and the program is uniquely suited to the needs of those who can only attend part-time. 11 The dialogue of learning Our studio instructors are all practicing design professionals who are actively engaged in producing real world equivalents to the types of projects being done in the studio classes. This fosters a sense of immediacy in the learning process which our students value greatly. It also enables many students to receive offers of internships and job placements through their instructors. 10 The amazing instructors taught me how to think as a designer and provided me with all the tools to succeed in the field, from conceptualizing spaces to smart business practices. 15 Gaining valuable experience The Collaborative Program provides a range of opportunities for internships and job placements with world class design professionals in our community. Such firms include Gensler, Moore Ruble Yudell, SOM, Hirsch-Bedner Associates, HOK, Kelly Wearstler, AC Martin Partners, Clive Wilkinson, Hatch Design, Cheryl Rowley Design and Michael S. Smith. Proximity to major showrooms at the Pacific Design Center, the Los Angeles Furniture Mart and the showrooms of West Hollywood also enables students to get valuable experience in to the trade environments. I started the UCLA Extension Architecture and Interior Design Program because of the flexibility it provides the working professional as well as classes that really push your creativity and prepare you with the necessary skills to get started in the industry. After taking a Specialization Studio in Hospitality Design with HBA/Hirsch Bedner Associates, I was offered a job upon graduation! Since then I ve been a designer on many amazing projects worldwide, including the Wynn Hotels in Las Vegas and Macau.
