6 History of CyberPatriot In 2005, the CIAS and the AFA held a one-day high-school level competition In 2008, the AFA Aerospace Education Council formed a partnership: SAIC General Dynamics CIAS USAF

7 History of CyberPatriot Pilot event held in 2009 with 8 teams Over half the participants indicated they were more likely to attend college after participation Initially limited to AFJROTC and CAP teams Allowed for controlled growth Built-in communication and coordination Program expanded in 2010 to 170 teams

8 Multi-round competition How CyberPatriot works Qualifying rounds are virtual and teams compete simultaneously Teams download VMware images and attempt to secure them over a given period of time Teams connected to centralized scoring platform Teams graded against known solution sets Finals held in Orlando and Washington DC 1 day on-site events Scripted Red Team activity Scholarships for top teams

9 How CyberPatriot works Competition makes extensive use of CyberNEXS platform from SAIC Provides agent on virtual machines Tracks scoring for all teams simultaneously Tracks what is corrected by the teams and when it is corrected Allows use of Windows and UNIX targets in competition Preparation materials provided for coaches and students CyberPatriot linked to Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition

10 How CyberPatriot works Competitors must be at least 13 years old and in grades 9-12 (or equivalent if home schooled/in a school that does not make this distinction) as of September 2011 Teams must have between 2 and 5 members Only 1 team per school per division Teams must have an adult coach verified by their school or CAP unit

11 CyberPatriot III Registration for Season 3 open now Two divisions, 500 team limit in each: Open: Any high school team Service: JROTC and CAP Practice rounds start Aug/Sept Registration deadline Oct 8, 2010 (or 500 teams) $350 team fee for Open division
