3 Why hold an Elementary Science, Engineering, and Technology Fair? Provides opportunity for development of science skills and processes as outlined in the VSC Promotes understanding of Scientific/Engineering concepts as outlined on the VSC
4 Provides an opportunity for authentic (real-world) hands-on research and learning Promotes development of practical communication and problem-solving skills Leads to long-lasting interest in Science and Engineering
5 Example of VSC Indicators and Objectives Scientific Inquiry Indicator Statement 3. Recognize the elements of a simple welldesigned investigation. Applications of Science Indicator Statement 4. Evaluate and modify designs and products based on performance.
6 How Will Student Achievement Be Assessed? Questions will be included in the end of year Science Assessment. Projects/racers will be assessed at the fair by specific rubrics.

12 What are the schools responsibilities? Hold a school level competition by April 21, 2004 Identify one 3 rd Gr. Team and one 4 th and one 5 th grade student to represent the school Send registration forms to the Office of Science PreK-12 no later than April 23, 2004
13 What are the teachers responsibilities? provide class time & instruction teach concepts & skills needed communicate expectations to parents provide feedback and support
14 What are the students responsibilities? complete the project, either in class or at home follow the guidelines provided

19 Student Participation Recognition All Science Fair and Safe Racer participants will receive a certificate of participation.
20 Science Fair Awards Grand Prize Content Area and Special Awards First Place, Second Place, Third Place, and Honorable Mention Ribbons
21 Safe Racer Awards Prizes for the Safe Racer Engineering Challenge have not yet been determined, but will probably include, First, Second, and Third Place recognition.
22 Presentation of Awards Science Fair awards will be presented at 4:00 p.m. on the day of the Fair. Safe Racer Engineering Challenge awards will be presented after competition is concluded.
