4 YOUR PATHWAY STUDY PLAN INTO PATHWAYS ST GILES FAST-TRACK PATHWAYS STAGE 1 Student applies for a St Giles/INTO University Pathway Programme via a UK/ US St Giles Centre Student applies for a (Fast-Track) University Pathway Programme at St Giles San Francisco or St Giles Vancouver STAGE 2 Student reaches required English language level at a St Giles Centre in the UK or US (International Semester Course of 24+ weeks) Qualified students receive a conditional offer from an INTO Partner University before or during their English course* Student reaches required language level at St Giles San Francisco (24+ weeks) or Vancouver (16 weeks) Application assistance provided during the course. Qualified students will receive a conditional offer from a St Giles university/ college partner. 6 ST GILES/INTO PATHWAY PROGRAMMES UK & US ENGLISH COURSE WITH ST GILES Students will take an International Semester Course (ISC) of 24+ weeks at any St Giles Centre in the UK or US in order to reach the required English level for an INTO Pathway Programme. They will be required to take an IELTS (UK)/TOEFL (US) examination preparation module during their course and can also select the following modules: Cambridge English Examination Course English for University Studies (UK only) English for Academic Purposes (USA only) For more information, please see our Course Dates and Prices 2016 brochure. UNIVERSITY PATHWAYS WITH INTO INTO centres have a range of programmes to suit students with many different educational backgrounds. In the UK, most international students will require an International Foundation Course which leads to the first year of an undergraduate degree. Although, some students may qualify to join the International Year One Course which leads to the second year of an undergraduate degree. In the US, students can choose either Standard/Accelerated Pathway Admission or Direct Admission. Admission to a Pathway programme allows students to start their undergraduate degree with a slightly lower GPA and TOEFL score, yet still earn university credit toward a degree and receive a higher level of support and academic preparation by INTO. There are also courses suitable for students who need to prepare for Master s level degrees in the UK or US, details on request. Most INTO Pathway Programmes have two or three start dates per year, all of which lead directly on to further study at the university or college of choice. Pathway Programme Content To prepare students to succeed in further undergraduate study, these programmes combine: Intensive language study Academic skills development Academic coursework INTO s partner network of leading universities offer more than 1,200 different degrees across all fields of study. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS The student s academic transcripts (incl. translations) will be assessed at the time of application. Minimum language level at the start of ISC course at St Giles UK US week International Semester Course (ISC) IELTS 4.5* TOEFL 45 or IELTS 4.5* 36 week International Semester Course (ISC) IELTS 4.0* TOEFL 40 or IELTS 4.0* * Equivalent testing scores may be considered at the time of booking, subject to level testing. NB: The minimum language level required to start an INTO International Foundation Course in the UK ranges between IELTS The minimum level required to start a Standard Pathway programme at a US partner university ranges between IELTS or TOEFL Higher levels will be required to enrol on shorter courses. 6

10 FAST-TRACK UNIVERSITY PATHWAY PROGRAMME - ST GILES SAN FRANCISCO The University Pathway Programme in San Francisco is a fast-track pathway option for students taking an International Semester Course (ISC) of 24+ weeks. On successful completion of this course, students can be placed at a range of 2-year community colleges in the USA. COURSE CONTENT Students on this fast-track programme will take an International Semester Course of 24+ weeks, and should select the English for Academic Purposes module to prepare themselves for university life. Topics covered will include: Academic writing including note taking Study skills Exam Techniques Introduction to the local culture. All students are offered academic counselling throughout their programme, and we help students with the application process for a twoyear Associate Degree at a St Giles partner college, or any other college of their choice. KEY FACTS Entrance Requirements C1 (Advanced) level of English for a period of at least 6 weeks prior to admission to a St Giles partner college some partner institutions may consider B2 (Upper- Intermediate) level. 12 FAST-TRACK UNIVERSITY PATHWAY PROGRAMME - ST GILES VANCOUVER The University Pathway Programme (UPP) is a 16-week course available at St Giles Vancouver, designed to help students succeed at a university or college in North America. COURSE CONTENT Throughout this University Pathway Programme, students will be guided through useful projects and studies, and will also attend speaker lectures. The course combines the following components: English Skills Development of reading, writing, listening and speaking skills as needed for successful university study Academic Skills Note taking, essay writing, presentation skills, research techniques, exam strategies, time management, critical thinking Exam Preparation IELTS and TOEFL preparation to ensure students are ready to meet the university entrance requirements, and to help master exam techniques KEY FACTS Entrance Requirements Students are required to be at one of the following levels: B2/C1 (Upper-Intermediate / Advanced) IELTS 5.0 TOEFL 55 Minimum Age 16 years Maximum Class Size 12 per class Lessons per Week 28 Lesson Length 50 minutes Volunteer Projects Example projects include: city cycling safe scheme, community kitchen, forestry tree planting, film making, charity fund-raising or assisting seniors Throughout the University Pathway Programme students will receive regular feedback on their work, individual academic counselling, career guidance and assistance with applications to universities. INTO s Pathway Programme fees for 2016/2017 will vary according to the INTO Centre chosen, but will range between 11,500-18,000 in the UK, and US$15,500-US$48,000 in the US. VISAS If you need a visa, St Giles will provide you with support and advice when applying for it. In the UK, a Short Term Study Visa is sufficient to take an English course of 6-9 months at St Giles. All non-eu passport holders will need to apply for a Tier 4 General Student Visa in their home country after completing their English course before starting an INTO university preparation course. Our UK Centres are listed by UKVI as sponsors with Tier 4 Sponsor status and are licensed by UKVI to issue CAS documents to assist with visa applications. In the US, students who are studying with St Giles on an F1 Student Visa can extend their visa while in the US. Our US centres are authorised under Federal Law to enrol non-immigrant international students. In Canada, St Giles Vancouver is able to provide students with documents to support their Visa application, as a member of Languages Canada. 14
