4 Administrative History Sharon Brown was first connected with Habitat for Humanity in early 1986 when she attended a talk by Millard Fuller at Eden United Church of Christ when Fuller was promoting Habitat for Humanity International. When Millard Fuller came to Muncie his speeck inspired Brown and four others to go to the work camp in Americus, Georgia which was the headquarters of Habitat for Humanity International. A task force was assembled to discuss the possiblity of developing a affiliate in Muncie, Indiana. Then on July 20th, 1986 group of 23 residents were at the dedication in Lafayette Indiana which President Jimmy Carter attended. They choose on their board and slate officers on September, Since its inception in 1989, Delaware County Habitat for Humanity has partnered with local families, helping them achieve the dream of home ownership. Habitat home ownership is based on the need for housing, the ability to repay a mortgage, and the willingness to partner with Habitat. Many of the partner families are second- and third-generation Delaware County residents who live and work in the community, but are being squeezed out of the housing market. Community partnerships are critical to our success. These include: churches and other organizations participating in group builds; contributions from local businesses, individuals, organizations, and corporations; hundreds of local volunteers who help build homes, serve on committees, support our ReStore, and join in our mission of providing decent, affordable shelter to families in need; City and County government officials who support our mission. The Delaware County Habitat for Humanity ReStore is located behind the Habitat for Humanity offices at 305 Curtis St. in Muncie, Indiana. Open to the public, the ReStore provides affordable materials to families for home repair and renovation, and accepts donations from individuals and businesses. Our ReStore received the 2008 medium population market ReStore of the Year award from Habitat for Humanity International. Their affiliate received the Good Neighbor Award from the Ohio Self-Determination Association in Delaware County Habitat for Humanity participates in Habitat International`s tithe program. Through this program they have funded the construction of more than 30 homes in Guatemala, Armenia, Madagascar and Bangladesh. Scope and Contents This collection includes newspaper articles about Delaware county Habitat for Humaity's work in Muncie and abroad. Photographs and negatives contain pictures from the new homeowners in Muncie from the creation and dedication of the formation of the Greater Muncie Habitat for Humanity. There are several Millard Fuller books that contain many stories of new happy homowners with Habitat for Humanity - Page 4 -

5 International and Delaware County Habitat for Humanity. These books give more insight about the role that Christianity has played in the development and life of the organization. Because of the nonprofit nature of the organization there are a lot of publicity flyers for construction services/supplies and brochures that were regulary sent to the director to Habitat for Humanity from The greater Muncie Habitat for Humanity change into (as it is now known) the Delaware County Habitat for Humanity is shown in the scrapbooks which are mainly focused on the Muncie affliate. They contain articles on the Mucie Habitat, pictures from Blitz construction for Muncie projects, pictures with President Jimmy Carter, and Habitat letters and documents within the organization.
