3 What is STAAR? The State of Texas Assessments of Readiness (STAAR) are new assessments that will focus on increasing college readiness of high school students and help to ensure that Texas students are competitive with other students both nationally and internationally. 3

4 College readiness means the level of preparation a student must attain in English language arts and mathematics courses to enroll and succeed, without remediation, in an entry level general education course for credit in that same content area for a baccalaureate degree or associate degree program. 12 What if I met the minimum score? Meeting the minimum score does give you those points for a cumulative score Retest is highly recommended as you are behind on points 9 th Grade Year, you should score as many points as possible because the difficulty of the test increases each year. The highest score you have will be what is used to calculate the cumulative score (in other words, you will not lose your scores if you retest and you score lower) 12

13 Transfer Students For students who transfer to a school in Texas from another state, testing is not required if the student received credit for a course This is determined based Student received credit for English I and will not take English I Writing and Reading tests. on your transcripts from If a student attempted but did not receive half or full credit and will earn that credit at a school in Texas will have to test in that subject your previous school! 15 Minimum Recommended Distinguished Achievement IMPORTANT: Graduate on Recommended or Distinguished Achievement Plan, if at all possible. Implications for admission into 4 year public universities if graduating on Minimum Plan. ( and athletic scholarships at stake, too, if graduating on Minimum Plan.) 15

22 December 2012 Retakes for EOC The STAAR EOC Retakes for December will be on the following dates: December 3 English I Writing December 4 English I Reading December 10 Algebra/Geometry December 11 World Geography/World History December 12 Biology 22

23 To test or not to test Student who did not meet the minimum score are required to retest. If you have met the minimum score on any EOC exam, it is highly recommended that you retake that exam to obtain a higher score. The state takes the higher score overall if the score is lower it won t matter. If you choose not to test, you and your parent will need to obtain and have a waiver signed prior to testing (available in the front office). Return this form to the front office ASAP. 23

24 Testing Procedure If you have been notified you need to test, you will need to check the library windows to find your testing room the morning of testing. You will need to report to your assigned room before 8:45 am with your student ID. Please leave all person items (books, bags, electronic devices, etc) at home, in your locker, or in your car until testing is done. If you bring personal items, you are required to turn them in to the test administrator upon entering the testing room. If you are caught with an electronic device, you will be dismissed from testing and your test will be voided. Once you have finished testing, you will be release to go to class. Report immediately to that class. 24
