2 What is Achieve Texas? Achieve Texas is a state education initiative that has been implemented to prepare secondary students and their parents to make informed educational choices. This initiative utilizes 16 federally designated Career Clusters as a foundation for schools to arrange their instructional programs. At TSTC, Achieve Texas Advisors promote technical education to participating high schools under a Title V Grant and utilize the Achieve Texas Plans (also known as Tech Prep Programs of Study or Six-Year Plans) to guide students into a technical program at Texas State Technical College.

4 The Goals of Achieve Texas Create a seamless transition for students from secondary to post secondary education and beyond. Promote Career Clusters and Achieve Texas Plans/Tech Prep Programs of Study (POS) Redesign curriculum and instruction to be active, hands-on, and project based Provide access to extended learning opportunities. Promote career preparation for high skilled, high wage, or high demand occupations, with a realistic well designed plan for the future.

5 Role of the Achieve Texas Advisor Promote college readiness by providing information to parents and students about career possibilities, post secondary education, college admissions and financial aid. Facilitate career exploration through online resources, Achieve Texas information sessions/presentations Meet with counselors Achieve Texas Plans/Tech Prep Programs of Study. Introduce TSTC technical programs by providing learning activities, coordinating demonstrations, and distributing general information. Promote early college credit by encouraging participation in Tech Prep, Dual Enrollment, and/or other articulation programs. Coordinate a Summer Math & Technology Camp targeting Tech Prep Students, where students will re-take their Math Accuplacer portion and visit it technical programs on campus.

The Tech Prep corporation (Tech Prep RGV) started in 1992 and is a partnership of Business leaders Education leaders Community leaders working together to produce a workforce prepared to meet the challenges of the future The corporation operates many programs beginning with College Tech Prep programs All programs managed by Tech Prep RGV provide a real world approach to education

17 College Tech Prep Programs Tech Prep programs combine academic courses that are needed for success in college and technical courses that begin to prepare students for a career. Students begin their course of study in high school and continue in a communityortechnicalor technical college. Students in Tech Prep programs can earn college credit through statewide articulated courses, locally articulated courses, dualcredit credit, concurrent enrollment, andcollege Board Advanced Placement (AP) courses.

18 Earning College Credits in High School Dual Credit Student receives a grade (and credit) for both high school and college course Student receives a grade on a college transcript at the time the course is taken Articulated Credit Student receives a grade for high school course College credit is banked until the student enrolls at the college
