WELCOME This guide will answer the most frequent questions international students have when settling in Milan. Consider it your survival guide, but remember that you are always welcome to refer to your International Students Office team at MIP for support and guidance. Also, you can find step-by-step guides for obtaining important documents at the International Students Office (ISO) website, or at the International Students Intranet site. We are here to make your life in Milan easy! International Students Office Sara Cuko and Xixi Fan Tel Cell wwww.mip.polimi.it/iso Intranet: International Students Welcome 2

1. GETTING SETTLED ACCOMMODATION The ISO provides support for finding accommodation prior to your arrival. If you have not secured accommodation yet, here you will find some tips. How can I find a room or a small apartment in a student friendly facility? You have three options which include residing at one of MIP s agreed residences, securing private rental or trying at one of Politecnico di Milano Campuses (Polimi), although here availability is low as most places are assigned to low income students. Depending on your needs this could be a long term or a short term solution. Within 15 minutes from MIP, on public transport: Campus Certosa (rooms and apartments); Italian Short Rent (rooms and apartments); Residence 2Gi Ajraghi (apartments); stanzesingole.it (rooms and apartments); UNIPLACES (rooms and apartments). Within 30 minutes from MIP: Italian Short Rent (rooms and apartments); Place4You (rooms in apartments); Residenza Porta Volta (apartments); Sigieri Residence; Stanzesingole.it (rooms in apartments); Residence Galileo Galilei (Polimi) ; UNIPLACES (rooms and apartments). Within 45 minutes from MIP: Campus Monneret; Italian Short Rent (rooms and apartments); Stanzesingole.it (rooms in apartments); Casa dello Studente (Polimi); Campus Martinitt (Polimi, also short stays); Place4You (rooms in apartments); UNIPLACES (rooms and apartments). How do I book accommodation at MIP agreed providers or at Politecnico Campuses? Ask the ISO for updated accommodation list and procedures. Can I have guests in my room at MIP agreed accommodation or at Politecnico Campuses? No, as a general rule this is not allowed, however you should enquire within. Student campuses sometimes have short stay rooms for relatives and friends at a cost varying from per day. How do I go about finding an apartment or a cheaper room? Ask about our Private Rental Guide with useful websites and tips. It is a useful and resourceful guide on finding private accommodation, but unfortunately the ISO cannot help you in your search! You can also refer to one of the several real estate agents across town. They will usually charge a fee for their services (usually equal to one month rent). Outside Milan: renting outside Milan can save you a lot of money. Make sure the town you select is on the urban or regional train line, with easy access to either Bovisa or Villapizzone. The ideal travel time on these services should be around 20 minutes. Also, remember that your public transport costs will double or triple as you exit the Milan urban area. PRIVATE ACCOMMODATION Ideally, travel time from your domicile to MIP should not exceed 45 minutes on public transport. Your contract should always be registered at the Taxation Office to be valid. Be wary of landlords not wanting to sign and register a contract. Use your best judgement to avoid fraud; negotiate a low payment prior to arrival and ask for your landlord id. What are the areas close to MIP and which areas in Milan are unsafe? Areas close to MIP include: Bovisa, Affori, Certosa, Quarto Oggiaro, Villapizzone, Cadorna, Garibaldi, Porta Venezia, Centro, Fiera, Sempione, Repubblica, Stazione Centrale. Unsafe areas include: Via Padova, Pasteur, Via Varesina, Baggio and Barona. Also, some streets in the Certosa, Quarto Oggiaro, Villapizzone and Central Station area can be a bit unsafe, especially at night. 1. Getting Settled 3

2. VISA AND MIGRATION INFORMATION 2. Visa And Migration Information Your Programme Office will inform you in due time about visa requirements and provide you with the necessary document confirming your admission. As a rule, non-eu students will need to obtain a visa to study in Italy. Visa application is to be submitted to the Italian Consulate or Embassy nearest to your place of origin or to the place where you reside habitually. Students from Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway and Switzerland do not need a visa. How to apply for an Italian Visa? Visa application can usually be filed 3 months before your intended arrival in Italy. Students who start one of our masters in another EU country and hold a valid residence permit of that country, might be able to enter Italy to continue their studies without a visa (conditions apply). As mentioned, your Programme Office will give you full details and assistance on Visa application. If your intended stay is longer than 90 days, together with your visa, you will need to have your original Visa Letter validated with a stamp from the consulate. This is done at the same time as your visa. Please ensure that you have received it when collecting your visa as the original stamped document is required for the application for your residence permit, upon arrival in Milan. 4

3. DECLARATION OF VALUE Prior to arrival, you have to start the process for obtaining the Declaration of Value (Dichiarazione di Valore). This document officially attests the validity of your degree in Italy by comparing it with our education system. It is issued by Italian Diplomatic Authorities, printed on their headed paper, stamped and signed. This is obtainable at the Italian Embassy, Consulate or Italian Cultural Institute responsible for the area of the city where you obtained your university degree. The legalized document will enable you to officially become a Politecnico student and enjoy all the associated privileges. Please refer to the Italian Consulate or Embassy for the list of required documents. We recommend that you start the procedure months in advance of your arrival. 3. Declaration of Value 5

4. DOCUMENTS FOR YOUR LEGAL STAY IN ITALY 4. Documents for your legal stay in Italy PERMIT OF STAY (Permesso di soggiorno) As a rule, NON-EU students will enter Italy on an Italian D type visa. Those students who have started their masters in another European country (typically France or Spain) may enter Italy on their valid residence permit obtained in that country, and do not need to obtain an Italian visa. If you are a non-eu citizen, within 8 days of your arrival in Italy, you will be required to complete an application kit to apply for a permit of stay. How do I get my Permit of stay? Obtaining your permit of stay is a 4 steps process: 1. Ask for the KIT (yellow striped envelop) that is available at all post offices bearing the Sportello Amico sign (meaning Friendly Counter ), and fill out form 1 contained in the kit. 2. Ship the KIT at the post office with copies of the following documents inside: - Copy of your passport with visa and personal data page; - Copy of the MIP Visa Letter validated by the consulate with a stamp (if you enter Italy on an Italian visa) - Copy of your French or Spanish residence permit and visa (if you enter Italy without a visa) - Bank statement proving that you have 5,800 for a one-year stay or a proof of scholarship (if you enter Italy with your French or Spanish residence permit) - Copy of your Enrolment Contract (if you enter Italy with your French or Spanish permit of stay) - Copy of your health insurance policy to cover you for the whole period of your stay in Italy, written in Italian or English. If you do not have health cover, you can purchase the Generali Italia S.p.A. insurance ( 98 for one year) at post offices. After submitting your application, at the post office you ll receive a receipt (Assicurata) and an appointment letter with time and date at a local Police Station (Commissariato). 3. Go to your appointment at the police station with the original documents, 2 passport size photographs and an Italian mobile phone number. At the appointment they will check the documents and take your fingerprints. 4. Later, when you will receive a text message from the Police on the number you have provided at your police appointment, you go and collect your permit of stay card. The ISO assists you in completing the form and checking all the documents. When and where do I collect my permit of stay card? You will receive a text message with details of when and where you can collect your card. It will usually be at the same Commissariato where you go for your appointment. Please note: The date indicated on the sms is the first available date you can collect your card. Police Stations have allocated days and time for collection. Ask the ISO for opening days and hours. If you do not receive a text message within one month, check the status of your permit application online. Where can I check the status of my application? To check the status of your application you can access to the immigration portal at: Select Area Riservata Stranieri at the 6

bottom right of the page, and log into the section with your user ID and password on your permit of stay receipt (assicurata). Can I work with my permit of stay for study purposes? Yes, you can work part time up to 20 hours per week. Can I travel outside Italy while waiting for my permit of stay? Yes, students with a study visa can travel throughout Italy and within the Schengen area within the first 90 days of their entry. Can I travel in Italy and Europe with my permit of stay? A permit of stay allows you to stay in Italy for the period covered by your permit and travel in all countries within the Schengen Area. On your Italian permit of stay, you can stay in another Schengen country for a maximum of 90 days during a six-month period, for tourism only. When do I have to renew my permit of stay? If your studies are longer than the duration of your permit of stay, you will have to renew it close to its expiration. The law states that applications for renewal must be filed within 60 days before expiry date. The procedure is similar to the application for the first permit of stay. You will need to provide proof of adequate financial means (around 6,000 for a year, or 500 per month), a Politecnico certificate, obtainable from the Politecnico master office and a certificate with grades of your exams, obtainable from your Programme Coordinator. May I travel in the Schengen area whilst awaiting my renewed permit of stay card? No, you may not travel the Schengen Area with the postal receipt of application and an expired permit. You may travel to your country of origin and re-enter Italy, but transit in a Schengen country is not allowed. How can I convert my permit of stay for study into a permit of stay for work? You can convert your permit of stay for study into a permit of stay for work when you receive a job offer. The conversion must be completed before your permit for study has expired. After graduation, with a valid study permit, you would be eligible to take up a job offer in Italy outside the migration quota system. The migration quota, the annual number of non-eu workers that can be hired in Italy, is designed to limit migration, but students graduating in Italy, holding a valid permit of stay, have the right to be hired regardless of the quota. If you do receive a job offer in Italy, but you do not hold a valid permit of stay, you will be able to accept it so long as the quota places have not all been taken. The procedure is divided into several steps, 4. Documents for your legal stay in Italy 7

4. Documents for your legal stay in Italy and you must do it in accordance with your employer. Ask the ISO for the document with general guidelines for converting a study permit into a work permit. STAYING IN ITALY AFTER GRADUATION Following graduation at the Politecnico, you will be eligible for a one-year permit of stay awaiting employment. This will give you the opportunity to stay in Italy another year, even if you have not found a job yet; however you can only request this additional permit if your previous one has not expired. How can I obtain my Fiscal Code (tax file number)? The fiscal code is your social security number and tax code in Italy. All students need to have a Fiscal Code (Codice Fiscale) in order to enrol at the Politecnico. It is also needed to sign a rental contract. The Fiscal code is issued by the Tax Authority (Agenzia delle Entrate) by providing the completed form, copy of your passport and copy of your visa. I am an European student, what am I required to do to legalise my presence in Italy? European students must formalize their presence in Italy by registering into the General Registry of the Council of Milan, 3 months after arrival in Italy. You will need to collect documents and fill out an application form, then send it via to the municipality. Among the documents required there are: enrolment certificate, your European health insurance card (EHIC), fiscal code, your i.d. and, importantly, a regular housing contract (registered at the taxation office). The ISO will provide you with detailed information and necessary forms. How do I obtain residency in Italy? All residence procedures are done at the Comune di Milano. The City Council has several offices, the main one being located at Via Larga, 12 (MM1 Duomo). Some procedures can be started online. Visit the Comune di Milano website at If you have an Italian passport you can apply for residency at the AIRE office (the register of Italians living abroad) at Comune di Milano, Via Larga, 12. Documents required to start the procedure are: Copy of your passport (the two main pages) Your passport If you are a European citizen the procedure is the same as for registering into the general registry. You will need a private health insurance for this purpose as your European health card is not accepted. If you are a non-eu citizen you can first elect residency in Italy after you have received your permit of stay card. You can take an appointment online at the website of the Comune di Milano, the Municipality of Milan, under Residenza Stranieri or you can send your application via . Documents required to start the procedure are: Fiscal code Passport and visa Permit of stay Can I obtain an Italian identity card? Once you have obtained residency you can request an Italian identity card (carta d identità). Documents required are: 1. passport 2. 2 passport photographs (in colour on white background) The Italian identity card is not valid as a travel document for non-eu students. You will still need your passport and permit card for travelling Europe. Can I drive with my driving license? Non-EU driving licenses will allow you to drive for a period of one year. However, your license must be accompanied by a certified translation of it. The translation has to be done by an official at your Consulate or by a certified translator at the Court of Milan, while the certification is done by the Prefettura di Milano at Via Servio Tullio, 4, Milano. If you have an international driving license, i.e. you had your license converted before you left your country, you do not need the certified translation. 8

EU driving licenses will allow you to drive with no further obligation. Make sure you have a valid license for driving in Italy. How do I open a bank account? Which documents will I need? You can open a bank account here in Milan, and this could even be cheaper than withdrawing from your account back home. The Politecnico di Milano has a preferred bank, the Banca Popolare di Sondrio, which offers students several different and cheap banking options. If you are an EU student, your fiscal code, passport and domicile address are required. If you are a non-eu student, your permit of stay card is required as well. If you have not received it by this point, you will need to provide further documents, which may not be acceptable by some banks. Banca Popolare di Sondrio will accept your postal receipt of permit application, together with a MIP attendance certificate or your admission letter. If you are interested in this bank option, you can write to the ISO and we will provide you more details and assistance. For renewing your permit of stay you will need to provide a bank statement proving you have enough funds to sustain yourself (calculated at around 6,000 for one year). The amount must be expressed in Euro. How much cash do I need to take with me? You should organize financial arrangements so that you will have enough money to cover living costs. Credit cards are widely accepted at many businesses and shops, with exception to government buildings and small retailers. Only some of the student residences accept credit card payments. Traveller s cheques are hardly accepted anywhere in Italy. Due to a recently introduced law, it is illegal in Italy to make cash payments exceeding Additionally, it is illegal to deposit in a bank account sums exceeding For this, bank transfer is the required method. 4. We remind students that they may access the multi-faith room only during class breaks, since their absence during class times cannot be justified. Opening hours: every day from midday to 5:30 pm.
