COURSE DESCRIPTION: BUS 205 Human Resource Management course introduces employment, selection, and placement of personnel, usage levels and methods, job descriptions, training methods and programs, and employee evaluation systems. The course includes procedures for management of human resources and uses case studies and problems to demonstrate implementation of these techniques. 2. PREREQUISITES: Although no prerequisites are necessary for this course, Blackboard knowledge is helpful. There is an online tutorial and class orientation available. Proficiency using Windows operating systems (95/98/2000/XP), word processing, , and web browsing. Access to a personal computer, either at home, office, or school, capable of providing graphical access to the Web via a high-speed modem (preferably 56K or higher), plus appropriate software (Webmail, Outlook, Outlook Express), and Microsoft Office products (Microsoft Word, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat.) Important! It has been determined that neither AOL nor COMPUSERVE is reliably compatible with Blackboard. If you use AOL, after login to AOL minimize the window and launch Internet Explorer and login to Blackboard. Some of the features of Blackboard do not work with Netscape. COURSE OBJECTIVES/COMPETENCIES: The BUS 205 course has several specific goals; among those goals are: to enable students to explain how effective administration of human resources (a) contributes to organizational effectiveness, (b) directly affects the profitability of the firm, and (c) ensures compliance with legal requirements; expose you to the key concepts, principles, and best practices for managing and enhancing human resources; to provide a forum for you to discuss personal experiences as they relate to human resource management in organizations; to provide students with an opportunity to apply the knowledge acquired in class to special issues facing human resource management; and To assist in the development of your leadership and interpersonal skills through experiential exercises, discussions, and presentations. Details and due dates about all assignments in Blackboard course. Below is the list of assignments without details. Weekly Assignments: Study and complete assignments and projects as scheduled in BB. Course Outline displays list of chapters for each week along with the due dates. Writing Assignments: Although you can work ahead, check the Weekly Assignments at the beginning of the week (in BB Assignments). Submit all writing assignments in Blackboard Digital Drop Box. Reading Assignments: Read the assigned chapter's Learning Objectives at the beginning of each chapter from the textbook. Read and study the entire chapter until you master these concepts. Be sure to also read the Summary of Learning Objectives, go over Review Questions, Discussion Questions, and Incidents and Exercises at the end of each chapter. 3 Discussion Board (DB): Read ALL Discussion Board messages under General Questions section, which may answer some of your questions. Join weekly discussions in BB Discussion Board as required. Post weekly DB assignments as indicated (minimum 3 postings over 3-days) by due date/time (Sunday 5 PM). Quizzes/Exams: Take the assigned chapter Quizzes and Exams as posted in BB. Chapter quizzes and exams (midterm & final) are for credit; however, study quizzes can be taken multiple times for study, not for grade. Prepare to take ALL assessments as scheduled and CLOSED BOOK; you may use two-pages of your hand-written or typed (not Xerox copied) notes. Chapter quizzes are available until end of assigned week. Exams are available for three-days and to be taken in NORFOLK TESTING LAB. Term Project: Creating a Business Plan is the term project. It is an individual project, not team-project. DUE date is indicated in BB course. Group Project: A case study may be discussed. Group leader to summarize and submit a report. This assignment may be omitted! Article Reviews: Two recent articles to be reviewed and submitted. Article abstracts are to be two-page, MLA style (excluding title page & works cited page), TYPED abstract of a current article (up-to six-months old) from the list of publications as indicated in BB. Skill Boosters: An interactive Internet activity. Free CODES will be provided; if not, this assignment will be cancelled. Visit Skill Boosters Web site at 6. HOW TO SUBMIT ASSIGNMENTS: Unless otherwise indicated, all writing assignments will be submitted using the assignment s link within the weekly assignment folder/item. Your submissions via will not be accounted for; receiving attachments may be unreliable due to the size of file, ISP's rules (attachments are deleted before they even get to my account due to virus alerts), etc. Follow these steps to properly submit assignments: Create your writing assignment in a word-processing program, such as Microsoft Word. Save your file as.doc (or.rtf if using another program besides MS Word; files with.wps extension are not accepted!) Open your course BB and go to Assignments (Weekly folder) Click the link of the assignment. Please label the submissions in its Comments box, as the following. Any assignments not labeled properly lose 10-points! 4 7. TIPS FOR SUCCESS: Announcements/ Read announcements and check student 3-times/week. Timely Submissions: Submit assignments as scheduled. Follow the suggested format in writing assignments. See Course Policies and BB for details. Make-up work: Make-up work may be available for partial credit, ONLY with proved proper/formal excuses. Student Handbook: Students are responsible for being aware of policies, procedures, and student responsibilities contained within the current edition of the Tidewater Community College Catalog and Student Handbook. Pay Particular Attention to the Following (Also See Course Policies): Tutorial Services, Important Dates, Student Registration, Class Rosters, and attendance of classes, Accommodating Students with Special Learning Needs/Disabilities, Instructor policies: Attendance, tardiness, late assignments, class participation, make-up work, cell phones & beepers. 8. EXCEEDING TIME LIMIT: Quizzes and exams are timed. Please DO NOT exceed the allotted time. Remember! You should study before taking the quiz -- looking up for answers takes time! In addition, I would like to remind that quizzes/exams are CLOSED BOOK! You may use your notes (2-pages limit). 1-point will be taken off for each minute exceeded, up to five-minutes. 2-points will be taken off for each minute between 5-10 minutes. I hope you won't exceed more than that and let me do these complicated calculations :) 9. INQUIRIES ABOUT QUIZ/EXAM QUESTIONS: If you feel a quiz/exam question is faulted please do not post a message regarding it in DB, simply because other students may have not completed the quiz. Instead, what I would like you to do is to start a file (in Word or Notepad) and enter the followings: 1. The question and possible answers (as appears in Quiz/Exam) 2. Your answer and correct answer according to Quiz/Exam 3. Explanation why you think it is wrong. 4. Textbook reference that proves this question is wrong (page number, paragraph number) You can send your questions as they come up (via SUBJECT: Quiz Questions/Your Name/Class Info), which may take a while to respond. If you keep this Word file through out the semester and send it to me immediately after you take the final exam, I will make all corrections at once. 5 10. EXTRA CREDIT & MAKE-UP OPPORTUNITIES: LATE ASSIGNMENTS ARE NOT ACCEPTED! It is the student s responsibility to arrange to allow his/her schedule to complete and submit all assignments timely. Any further extensions, due to emergencies that are documented officially, must be discussed. If you do your course work timely, you would not need any extra credit or make up; however, life is in the way even when we have the best intentions to complete our educational obligations. Follow these guidelines when you need to make up for missing assignments: If you miss the deadline for a quiz or if you could not completed due to technical issues occurred (with your home computer) you have opportunity to make up two quizzes (for the entire semester). NO RESETTING will be available; DO NOT ask your instructor to reset your quiz! Two make up labs will be provided to make up for missing quizzes, one during midterm, another during final exam. Depending on the availability, Norfolk Testing Center may be holding the make up lab. I may be holding one of the make up lab meetings myself, at Virginia Beach Campus, ATC Bldg. Information will be posted in BB Announcements. If you miss an exam due to illness, work obligations, or any other emergencies, you will have to provide an official document indicating that you were occupied during the entire exam time (usually 3-days). A comprehensive exam that covers the entire textbook will be available at the end of semester to make up for a missing exam. Make special arrangements with your instructor; you may take this exam at the Norfolk Testing Center or in the make up lab, if offered by instructor. If you miss a weekly writing assignment, you may make up by completing extra credit assignments within the following week. See BB Assignments, Extra Credit Assignments folder. Special arrangements may be considered contact your instructor timely. 11. TECHNICAL PROFICIENCIES: To succeed in an online course, you should be comfortable demonstrating certain technical competencies. See "Basic Computer/Internet Competencies" in Course Information. 12. EVALUATION: Grades will be determined based on performance on quizzes, timely submission of assignments, examinations, and overall course performance.
