1 A presentation and proposal for the member libraries of Nassau Library System in Uniondale, New York for a customized mobile application from Capira Technologies, LLC. Overview This presentation will provide the member libraries of the Nassau Library System with an overview of proposed functionality and design for a custom built consortium mobile application. Contents Include: Sample application launcher icons Proposed functionality and description of each application menu

2 Application Launcher Icon The application launcher icon is found on the springboard and applications menus of Apple and Android devices. The following launcher icons are proposed samples based on feedback from the NLS Goods and Services Committee. Graphical Design When a user first downloads and runs the NPLM Mobile application on their device, they will be prompted on the first screen to choose their home library. Choosing their home library will cause the application visuals to change predefined resources for that specific library including background color, banner image, and toolbar colors. There will be approximately 9 different color themes for member libraries to choose from as their specific app theme.

3 Menu Overview The NPLM Mobile application contain the following menus: Choose Your Library First Time Setup Main Menu Search the Catalog Search Collection / Find Movies / Find Audiobooks / Find Childrens Books / Find Video Games Scan ISBN My Account Programs & Events Online Services Museum Passes Research Library Information Connect With Us Some of these menus will be nested inside others. For example, Search Collection is a child menu of Search the Catalog. Choose Your Library

4 Choose Your Library When a user first downloads and runs the NPLM Mobile application on their device, they will be prompted on the first screen to choose their home library. Choosing their home library will cause the application visuals to change predefined resources for that specific library including background color, banner image, and toolbar colors. An I don t know my home library link will be provided for users who may not have a library card and are unsure to which library they may belong. This will link to a page hosted on Nassau-e with information about finding which library a patron may belong to. There is a generic NPLM theme which will be used for this menu since the user has not yet picked their home library. First Time Setup

5 First Time Setup After a user chooses their home library, the remaining application menus will change their visuals based on the theme colors chosen by the library, and that library s banner image. On this menu, patrons can provide their barcode and PIN to verify their library record information. This process uses the PATRONAPI for authentication. If a member library is standalone, the app server will forward the request to the appropriate ILS for authentication. If a user authenticates successfully, they can access advanced app functionality such as Digital Library Card and Check Notifications. Users who do not have a library card, or who do not want to fill this out have the option to Skip this screen and go to the main menu. Notes: Users can access this screen at any time in the future under the My Account menu and selecting Set Up Mobile Account A Please call us if you have problems message is displayed at the bottom. The phone number provided will change based on the library selected. Main Menu

6 Main Menu The Main Menu is the screen which is displayed after a user has chosen their home library and completed/skipped the First Time Setup. This is the central point from where users can access all other application menus and features. This menu will be the default displayed when a user launches the NPLM application for each additional use. The Theme and Colors will already be set based on the users choice of Home Library, they will not have to choose again each time they use the app. Museum Passes button will push users to a page on the chosen library website with information about reserving museum passes. Research button will push users to a page on the chosen library website with information about research tools and online databases. My Account icon will be a smaller version of the chosen library s physical library card Search Catalog

7 Search Catalog Search Catalog is the screen is the launching point for users to search for items in the library catalog. Users can choose between the following screens: Search the Collection A Keyword search of all materials in the library catalog(s). Find Movies Keyword Search limited to DVD, VHS & Blu-Ray materials Find Audiobooks Keyword Search limited to Book on CD/Book on Tape. Find Childrens Books Keyword Search limited to searching children s items in the collection, provided there is a material/itype to limit by. Find Video Games Keyword Search limited to searching video games in a library s collection. If a library does not circulate Video Games, this option will be hidden on the menu. Scan ISBN Will prompt the user to provide an ISBN to look up in the catalog. ISBNs can be entered by hand or by using the device camera. Search the Collection

8 Search the Collection Search the Collection is where users will search for items in the catalog. Users can change the values of 4 fields: Keywords to search by, Search Type (keyword, author, title), Material Type, and Search Library. Material Type is optional, the default value is ALL. Search By defaults to Keyword. Search Library will always default to whichever one the user has chosen as their home library. They may change it to search any other library, or All Libraries at any time. Keywords are required to search, it cannot be blank. Pressing the Search button will launch the in-app browser to the Encore service. Depending on the library chosen, it will be the ALIS Encore instance, or an Encore instance from a standalone library. My Account

9 My Account My Account is the screen is the launching point for users to view their library record and access account related features/services. Users can choose between the following screens: View My Records Will push the user to the appropriate Patron Login page on the ILS web server in the in-app browser. Depending on the users Home Library, this will be on alisweb.org or on a standalone PAC page. Digital Library Card Will allow authenticated users to generate a digital, scannable version of their library card. This option will be hidden for those libraries who do not want it enabled. Set Up Mobile Account Same as First Time Setup, except there is no SKIP button, only a back button. Check Notifications Will provide notifications about items on hold, fines owed, and card expiration via the PATRONAPI. Pay My Fees Pushes users to the appropriate web page hosted on the PAC to log in and pay fines on their account using the in-app browser. Get a Library Card Pushes users to a page on the users home library website with information about applying for a library card. Libraries who do not have this page on their website will need to create one. Digital Library Card

10 Digital Library Card Displays a digital, scannable version of an authenticated users library card. It will display a barcode along with the patrons barcode number. Digital Library Card background is a scan of the chosen home librarys physical cards. Programs & Events

11 Programs & Events Users can choose between the following screens: Calendar of Events Allows the user to view a list of events coming at the library. If a user does not have an events calendar service like Evanced, Eventkeeper, etc, then it will push to an events information page on the chosen library website. Newsletter Pushes users to a PDF version of the users home library latest newsletter. If the library does not provide a PDF version of their newsletter, it will push users to a page on their chosen home library website with latest news information. Additional Services Pushes users to a page on the users home library website with information about additional services they may provide. Libraries who do not have this page on their website will need to create one. Calendar of Events

12 Calendar of Events Calendar of Events displays upcoming events happening at the library by pulling data from a feed. This feed will come from an Events Service used by the library such as Evanced, EventKeeper, etc. Users will have the capability to search the list of events for their chosen library by keyword. Event listings will display the event name, date, time, location and a brief description based on data available from the events service feed. If the Event Calendar service used by the chosen library supports online registration, a Register button will be provided. Online Services

13 Online Services Online Services will display a list of digital services provided by the chosen library. If a specific service is not offered by the chosen library, it will not show up in the list. Users can choose between the following screens: Nassau Digital Doorway Allows the user to browse the Overdrive catalog. It will prompt the user to download Overdrive Media Console on their device if they have not done so already. Freegal Allows the user to browse the Freegal catalog. It will prompt the user to download Freegal on their device if they have not done so already. Zinio Allows the user to browse the Zinio catalog. It will prompt the user to download Zinio on their device if they have not done so already. Tumblebooks Pushes the user to the library Tumblebooks page Live Homework Help Pushes the user to Tutor.com for the chosen library. Learning Express Pushes the user to the Learning Express site for the chocen library Mango Languages Allows the user to browse the Mango Languages service. It will prompt the user to download Mango Languages on their device if they have not done so already. Library Information

14 Library Information Users can choose between the following screens: General Information Displays basic information about the library including address, operating hours, and more. Directions Provides directions to the chosen library. Will use Google Maps app if available on device. If the chosen library has branches, users will be prompted to choose which branch they want directions to. Contact Us Allows the user to call or the library. Library Board Pushes the user to a page on the chosen library website with information about the library board of trustees. Policies Pushes the user to a page on the chosen library website with information about the library policies. Be a Library Advocate Pushes the user to a page on the chosen library website with information about the Friends of the Arts or Donation information. Connect With Us

15 Connect With Us Connect With Us is a menu that provides links to basic social media services provided by the library. Users can choose between the following options: Facebook Displays the chosen library s Facebook page. If the Facebook app is available on the device, it will be used to display the Facebook page. If not, it will be displayed in the in-app browser. Twitter Displays the chosen library s Twitter feed. If the Twitter app is available on the device, it will be used to display the Twitter page. If not, it will be displayed in the in-app browser. Pinterest Displays the chosen library s Pinterest page using the in-app browser. Other Social Media Pushes the user to a page on the chosen library website with information about other social media services the library has subscriptions for. Additional Features Push Notifications Push Notifications are built into the mobile application by default. On Apple devices, users are prompted as to whether they want to receive them or opt out. On Android, there is no opt-in/out, it is automatic. A web based console is provided to push notifications to users. Each member library director will get their own log in for the web console. Users will receive push notifications for their chosen library only. Additional Features Google Mobile Analytics Google Mobile App Analytics captures mobile app-specific usage data and integrates it with a Google Analytics account for Nassau Library System. Google Mobile Analytics provides a suite of reports provides the tools and metrics you need to analyze and evaluate the NPLM app performance, including: The number of installations Devices and networks used to access app The geographic location of visitors Customized tracking of special content, like searches and events The number of screens seen per use, and the order in which visitors move through these screens
