1 INSTRUCTOR NAME: INSTRUCTOR COURSE FORMAT: Jyoti Chandra Online COURSE OBJECTIVES: As objectives of the course we shall: be aware of historical computer developments, learn computer terminology (hardware & software), learn to use selected application software packages, learn operating system fundamentals, apply critical thinking and problem solving to projects, and understand what impact computers have on society. Successful student will: 1. Explain the activities of the components of a computer system such as: CPU, memory, ports, buses, input/output devices and component development. * 2. Demonstrate the fundamentals of computer-based operating systems and utility programs. 3. Describe and demonstrate application software programs such as: word processing, spread sheets, database organizational concepts, entering and querying a data base, and presentation software. * 4. Compare and contrast communication and networking concepts including local area networks (LAN), metropolitan area networks (MAN), wide area networks (WAN), topologies, wired and wireless media approaches, network connectivity issues and methods, general and firewall security. 5. Describe the information systems development approach, including system development life cycle, analysis, design, implementation and support. 6. Identify and discuss computer ethics, crime, privacy and other social implications. 7. Use the internet and library resources to research topics and use . * Student Learning Objectives ATTENDANCE: Since this is an online class, attendance in the class will be evaluated based on the Assignments uploaded and Tests taken. If you have problems meeting any deadlines in the course, let me know via , and I will try to help you out. Otherwise you may be dropped from the course if there is no assignment or assessment activity for over two weeks. You MUST complete a Class Survey by due date to stay in the class. NOTE: MAC users will need to have access to Office 2013 for Windows to complete SAM projects, Office for MAC 2013 CANNOT be used. 3. Internet connection 4. Office 2013 Program for PC. Do not use Office 2010 or 2007 since it will not have all the functionality. Office 2013 should have Word 2013, Excel 2013, PowerPoint 2013 and Access 2013 programs. NOTE: As a student, you can buy Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013 from Foundation of Community College: for $ You will need to verify your student status by sending them your class enrollment information. COURSE EVALUATION: WEIGHT: GRADES: Discovering Computers (BlackBoard) 90% & up - A Tests 50% 80% to 89% - B 70% to 79% - C Office 2013 Assignments (SAM) 60% to 69% - D Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint <60% - F SAM Projects 25% SAM Exams 25% Total Points 100% GRADES: Discovering Computers chapter test and Group Activity grades will be available on BlackBoard. Office 2013 training, projects and exams grades will be available in SAM. Training will be for practice and learning purposes only and will not be used in final grade. Following formula will be used in calculation of final grade: FINAL GRADE = 50% DC Test + 25% SAM Project + 25% SAM Exams At the end of the semester SAM total % will be moved to BlackBoard for the Final Grade calculation. CLASS INFORMATION: For this course we will be using two textbooks and two websites. Instructor has the right to change the schedule or assignments if needed, and these changes will be announced online. To get good grades, you must keep up with the class schedule regarding assignments, tests etc. Use C:\CSG130 folder to save all your work. SAM: This is a special website created by the Publisher which will be used for Office 2013 (WORD, EXCEL, ACCESS and POWERPOINT) training, projects and exams. Review SAM Student Manual on BlackBoard (SAM Information link) for details about using SAM. To use SAM, you should do the following: o Buy the SAM code with bundle package from the GWC Bookstore. o Register for the course using the Institution code: T o Section to join: Chandra-CSG Fall2015 o After you join, you be able to access SAM assignments. Discovering Computers 2016 (lecture textbook) READING ASSIGNMENTS: You will be required to read the material presented in the chapters Because this is a broad survey course, you will be exposed to many related data processing concepts in a business-oriented context. Review PowerPoints for each chapter available on BlackBoard. TESTS: All the chapter tests will be in BlackBoard. Check syllabus and BB for due dates. Use Study Guide at the end of each chapter to prepare for the test. Extra training will be available in SAM or chapters Each task will have introduction, Observe and Apply tabs at the bottom. Use observe to learn about topics and Apply to practice matching terms with definitions. You can access the tests using Discovering Computers (DC) Tests link or Weekly Tasks on BlackBoard. All tests will have 25 multiple choice questions, will be 25 points and you will have 40 minutes to finish the exam. Complete the exam in one sitting. MUST complete by due date. Enhanced Office 2013 Introductory (lab textbook) SAM ASSIGNMENTS: 1. Use how to videos accessible at sam.cengage.com to learn about SAM assignment submission for training, project and exams. 2. You will be completing the online training, projects and Exams for Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint chapters using SAM website which will display date available and date due for each task. 5 3. MUST complete by due date. SAM activities will be graded as soon as you submit. 4. You will be completing following activities in SAM: a. Training: Use training to learn the skills needed to complete the SAM projects. It is for LEARNING purpose only and will not be used for grading. You will use online simulated Office 2013 environment. You are allowed unlimited attempts. b. Project: Download project instructions and data files to CSG130 folder. Complete the project using your copy of Office 2013 program and then upload to SAM. DO NOT SHARE your project files with another student; it will be flagged as cheating and both parties will get zero. For Word, PowerPoint and Excel, you will complete projects for chapters 1-3. For Access you will have projects only for chapters 1-2. You will be allowed five attempts for each project. c. Exam: You will use online simulated Office 2013 environment. Exam will be task based, similar to training. You will be allowed five attempts for each task. Each exam can be repeated twice. SAM Exams will be for Word, PowerPoint and Excel chapters After you complete the projects, you can check your results using SAM Reports link. 6. You are allowed to repeat the SAM assignments for better learning and grades, but must be completed before the due date: Training Unlimited Project five times Exams two times COURSE COMPLETION: The last day for a drop with a refund is 5-SEP-15. The last day to drop this class without a "W" is 6-SEP-15. The last day to drop this class with a "W" is 14-NOV-15. These options are handled through Admissions and Records and are the responsibility of the student.
