REQUIRED TEXT & SOFTWARE: Understanding Health Insurance, twelfth edition, by Michelle A. Green and JoAnn C. Rowell, ISBN 13: ADDITIONAL COURSE MATERIALS: 1. For writing papers for assignments, you will need word processing software. You may use WordPad, which is a word processing program that is installed as a part of your Microsoft Windows operating system. To locate WordPad, click Start, All Programs, and Accessories. It should be the last item in the menu list. Alternatively, you may use MS Word and save your documents as.rtf files. 2. You may need Adobe Acrobat Reader to read some of the linked web pages. Adobe Acrobat is a free download. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course introduces fundamentals of medical coding, billing, and insurance. Emphasis is placed on the medical billing cycle to include third party payers, coding concepts and form preparation. Upon completion, students should be able to explain the life cycle of and accurately complete a medical insurance claim. PREREQUISITE: None GENERAL EDUCATION COMPETENCIES: 1. Demonstrate effective communication skills using listening, speaking, reading, and/or writing. 2. Utilize basic computer and technological skills. 3. Employ critical thinking skills to analyze problems and reach logical conclusions. 4. Recognize and demonstrate appropriate social or professional behaviors within the discipline.

2 GOALS/STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES (Students will be able to demonstrate competency in the following areas): Course Syllabus (cont.) Plan Prepare 1. Understand and demonstrate the use of CPT and ICD-10 codes in billing for a medical office. 2. Understand and demonstrate the correct Produce Practice completion of the CMS-1500 form and the critical importance of this task in a medical office. 3. Demonstrate how to problem solve in dealing with insurance companies in reducing the number of denied insurance claims and how to prevent the future denial of insurance. MAJOR COURSE GOALS AND ASSIGNMENTS: Reading each chapter in the required textbook. Discussing issues and/or cases with classmates on the discussion board. Completing "Chapter Review assignments. Completing seven module tests. Completing a final exam. METHODS OF EVALUATION: Regular attendance is required to pass this course. If the student misses more than 20% of the class (3 weeks) or fails to make contact for 2 consecutive weeks, he/she will be dropped. If you cannot resolve your password issues on your own, please contact the 24/7 helpdesk at Course Attendance: Course attendance of 100% is expected. Since this is an online course you are required each week to complete all assignments in Moodle. Non-activity for one week (failure to complete assignments) in Moodle will be counted as an absence. NO EXCEPTIONS. If contact is not made prior to the 10 percent point of the course, then the student will be dropped from the course with a grade of NA. If absences exceed 20% of all scheduled contact hours, the student will be dropped from the course with a grade of W or WF depending on the official withdrawal date. If absent from class for two consecutive weeks, the student will be dropped from the course with a grade of W or WF depending on the official withdrawal date. Please be aware that just logging into Moodle and viewing course information and lecture material does not count for attendance. See the college catalog for current policy concerning class attendance, tardiness, drop / add periods, etc. 3. Course Assignments: All submissions must be made through the appropriate Moodle links unless instructor specifies differently. No attachments or paper copies will be Late assignments will be accepted at the discretion of the instructor. However, no late assignments will be accepted during final exam week. The student will be responsible for completing and saving assignments in the specified file types. Any other format will not be 4. Course Quizzes and Exams: Quizzes, tests, and exams must be taken on the scheduled date; otherwise a grade of zero will be assigned. Any exceptions to this policy must be the result of a documented emergency or prior arrangement with the instructor. Do not wait until the last scheduled date to take any quizzes, tests, or exams in case of computer or technical difficulties. In the event you are locked out or bumped out while taking your exam, you must immediately the instructor. Alternative arrangements must be made to take a different exam, which may include taking the exam on campus. Tests will be posted for a minimum of two days each. Please see the Course Schedule for a list of all due dates and test dates. All assignments and tests will be submitted and/or completed online. Instructions for each assignment/test are posted under each Module. Scores will be posted in the Grade Book in as timely a manner as possible. On any assignment or test where there are essay questions involved, the instructor must go in and manually grade the essay portion of the assignment/test. Page 3

4 Therefore, it may be up to 10 days before you see your actual grade for the assignment test.
