Internationality as Regional Network Institute International Student Body: Executive Committee Meeting 1 April 2010 Paper 6.2 (c) Our full time MBA intake has students from 10 countries which include Thailand, India, Uzbekistan, Myanmar, South Africa, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh and Cambodia. We currently have dual degree program students from India, UK, France, Germany and Poland. These students complete 2 semesters of the entire program in SOM AIT. SOM has received 15 exchange students from Asian and European partners. The International Executive MBA program in Vietnam enrolled 138 new students in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Dongnai and Vung Tau. The professional Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) is being conducted in 5 countries namely Vietnam, Sri Lanka, India, Taiwan and Thailand. Currently 93 students have enrolled in this program in the different centers. No new intake of students in 2009 as no student has graduated yet. With an increasing diversity in student and faculty bodies, the School of Management has been able to recruit students more from regions that have not been traditionally 1

2 represented, such as South Africa and new countries in East Europe such as Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, whereby increasing interaction among nationalities represented in a class. III. Excellence and Relevance in Education and Outreach AIT-SOM is preparing an internal assessment report for EFMD-EPAS accreditation. The school is planning to achieve the EFMD accreditation for the MBA program. SOM is able to build and strengthen its relationships with the professions by developing strategic partnerships with both public and private sectors through its Executive development and research projects. Also an increasing number of SOM s adjunct faculty for its Executive development programs are from the private sector. Branding and International Network Promotional visits and activities The school plans to actively participate in several education fairs internationally and in Thailand. SOM is trying to focus on emerging Asian markets like China and India and new places in Africa (Nigeria and Kenya) to strategically market itself as a regional hub for management education and capacity development. SOM Marketing plan outlining the planned activities of 2010 has been finalized and the plan is being implemented. 1. Thailand: Team from SOM participated in the International Education fair organized by The Office of the Civil Service Commission of the Government of Thailand. SOM will evaluate education fairs and participate in the future as well. AIT-SOM placed advertisements in MBA magazine and Dr. Barbara Igel was interviewed by the magazine as part of their special issue to profile International MBA programs in Thailand. 2. China Team from SOM participated in the QS World Grad School Tour in Guangzhou China. This was the first time SOM participated in the QS tour. 3. India SOM will participate in the Times Education fair in Pune India in April Kazakhstan SOM will participate in the QS MBA tour in Almaty Kazakhstan 3

4 5. Kenya and Nigeria SOM will participate in the QS MBA Tour in Nairobi Kenya and Lagos Nigeria. 6. Advertisements were placed in Newsweek. 7. In March Dean Igel accompanied by Dr. Do Ba Khang, SOM Faculty participated in a workshop organized by Yamaguchi University, Graduate School of Innovation and Technology Management (MOT) Japan on MOT Education & its Curriculum for Working People from Asian Perspectives. The workshop brought together representatives from leading Universities of China, Korea, Vietnam and Japan, which provide MOT education. Strategic Partnerships MoU and MoA signed with the following academic institutions: o Discussions with the South Asian Institute of Management Nepal and the Nepal Bankers Training Institute focused on identifying common areas of interest. AIT has also entered into MOU with the 2 institutions. o Draft MoU is being finalized between SOM-AIT and the University of Economics and Business (UEB) of the Vietnam National University Hanoi for collaboration on a unified BBA-MBA program. o A renewal of the MoU with ESCP Europe is now in process. Discussions with Industry Partners: Accompanied by the Vice President of Resource Development, Dean Igel and Prof. Nazrul Islam, SOM Faculty held discussion with representatives of the Thailand Science Park. The discussion was very fruitful and identified areas in which AIT-SOM can help by providing professional training for the human resource of the Science Park and the tenant companies. SOM had promising visits and discussions with the Director of HR and Director of Procurement of CP Group (True Corporation Public Company Ltd.) in working together with SOM in co-teaching in MBA courses (Supply Chain Management), obtaining case studies for teaching, company projects for MBA students with direct interaction and feedback from the company. SOM faculty have been encouraged to increase involvement with the corporate sector in delivering courses and MBA student projects. Similar discussions were held with the DHL Express Private Ltd., Manager for Thailand and Indo-China operations. DHL agreed to deliver presentations on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to support SOM in emphasizing and integrating business sustainability issues in its curriculum. 4

5 Discussions with UN organizations: Within the framework of the ongoing MoA between AIT and ESCAP, SOM and ESCAP/ Asian and Pacific Centre for Transfer of Technology (APCTT) in New Delhi, India are exploring the possibility to jointly recruit students for the Professional Masters in Technology Management (PMTM) program. ESCAP/APCTT is interested in the specialization of Knowledge and Technology Transfer for SMEs as well as National Innovation Systems. Collaboration proposals were received from the following universities/educational institutions: Mr. Mahadeo Jaiswal Dean of MDI Gurgaon visited SOM to discuss the possible extension of MoU and proposal of a Dual Degree Program between MDI and AIT, SOM. Mr. Kiran Dongol, Principal of Modern College Nepal and AIT alumnus visited SOM to discuss possible areas collaboration such as the option of Unified Bachelor-Master s program. Dean Igel and Dr. Khang had meetings with the Vice President, Vice-Dean, Director and faculty of University of Economics and Business (UEB) of Vietnam National University in Hanoi to finalize issues related to the unified BBA-MBA program. SOM faculty members are reviewing the course syllabus of the BBA program at UEB to assess its compatibility and that it sufficiently covers topics in required courses of SOM. On-going discussions about possibilities to launch the Masters in European Business (MEB) Degree - AIT Track initiated by ESCP France. The proposed structure of this MEB degree program is for the admitted students to start their first semester at SOM; then continue their study during the beginning of January semester until February/March at AIT. The total study period of this program is 1.5 years (18 months) and the students will be awarded MEB degree from ESCP Europe at the end of the study. 5

6 V. Development and Resource Management In November 2009, SOM concluded its 6th Advisory Board Meeting chaired by Dr. Ajva Taulananda, Vice-chairman of C P Group in Thailand. The SOM board welcomed new board members: Mr. Herbert Vongpusanachai, Country Manager of DHL Express in Singapore; Ms Do Thi Thu Hang, Chairwoman, President of Sonadezi Board of Management, Bien Hoa Industrial Zone in Vietnam; and Ms. Arunporn Limskul, Assistant Vice President, PPM and Corporate Brand Management of AIS in Thailand (Mr. Vongpusanachai and Ms. Limskul are SOM alumni Batch of 1991 and 1992 respectively). The SOM Advisory Board continues to play an important role in the development of SOM. Matters discussed in the meeting included the performance of SOM in 2009, the efforts to involve industry experts in co-teaching, SOM efforts for accreditation and briefing by the AIT president on the new proposed financing model for AIT. The board members have expressed their commitment to support AIT-SOM in the future activities.
