1 CURRICULUM VITAE Donna L. Russell, Ph.D. Assistant Professor Learning Technologies Curriculum and Instructional Leadership Educational Research and Psychology Teacher Education School of Education University of Missouri-Kansas City Kansas City, Missouri, USA (office) Ph.D. in Educational Psychology with Emphasis on cognition and technology, University of Missouri- St. Louis Masters of Education Degree in Curriculum and Instruction, University of Missouri- Columbia Current Projects Medical Simulation Grant I am working with nursing professors at UMKC College of Nursing to develop an NIH grant that will develop a 3D virtual simulation for training nursing students. Virtual training for Preservice Teachers Grant I submitted a New Media and Learning grant that would develop a virtual training program for the preservice teachers in the Institute for Urban Education. Book Chapter I am a co-author with Diane Hui of a chapter in the book, Information Communication Technologies for Enhanced Education and Learning: Advanced Applications and Developments. Our chapter is titled, Understanding the Effectiveness of Collaborative Activity in Online Professional Development with Innovative Educators through Intersubjectivity. Geoworld s Grant
2 I am Co-PI on a Kaufman Foundation grant that creates a high school geoscience program in Second Life. My focus is on problem-based learning and assessment of learning. This program is designed to teach urban students advanced geosciences concepts using a series of virtual worlds that allow them to engage in collaborative activities and respond to simulations based on four geosciences worlds. I will also implement a research study using cultural historical activity theory. Presentation at E-Learn Conference in Canada, October I presented on the Geoworlds project and the potential to use AI bots in Second Life environments designed to simulate problem-solving scenarios. Studies of MMPOGs I am working with professors in three other universities to design a study of their collaborative course taught in Second Life, a Massive MultiPlayer Online Game. This 3-D collaborative virtual learning environment will be the location of a virtual campus that will use the multiple learning objects and collaborative online forums to aid in developing advanced student learning processes. Our studies will focus on the use of Artificial Intelligent Agents in the development of problem-based learning environments. Problem-Based Learning and Creativity book chapter I wrote a chapter in the upcoming book, Problem-Based Learning and Creativity. My chapter is titled, Using Cultural Historical Activity Theory to Understand how Group Collaboration Impacts an Online Problem-Based University Course. Virtual Instructors Pilot Research Group I am a researcher in the Virtual Instructors Pilot Research Group (VIPRG) which is part of the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Learning Technology. I am a member of the research team on the VIPRG Human Behavior, Instruction, and learning Committees and the Learning Technology Sub-Committee. We are developing modular learning environments based on research in multiple fields of expertise. New training program for the Nelson-Atkins Art Gallery I designed a new training program for the Nelson to aid in the preparation of their staff and volunteers for the opening of their new building.
3 I am co-pi on a NSF grant titled ARROWS: Achieving Recruitment, Retention & Outreach With STEP Written in conjunction with Dr. Odom of School of Education and the School of Computing and Engineering (SCE) dean, I am in charge of the research and professional development for the high school teachers including the design of problem-based learning modules. Study of Online Group Problem-Solving I am currently engaged in data structuring for a study of an online problem-based course I designed and implemented winter 2006 semester. The course, The Development of a Technology- Based Program in Education (EDCI 573) has students working in online groups to design and implement a plan of action to address problems in a technology-based educational program. I used cultural-historical activity theory as my methodology to design the study and social language theory to analyze the text data to understand the level of interactions in the groups. AERA 2006 (American Educational Researchers Assoc.) Two of my students (one doctoral and one masters level) and me presented at AERA in the Post-Secondary division. I presented on the problem-based learning unit during which the students designed their presentation on their dialogic analysis of a university course taught online collaboratively with a university in the US and a university in Sweden NECC 2006 (National Educational Computing Conference) Two of my students and myself presented a presentation on a problem-based learning course that resulted in their presentation of designing curriculum and professional development for educators implementing handhelds in the classroom. Book Chapter I have written a chapter for the book Cases on Global e-learning Practices: Successes and Pitfalls. My chapter will be the case study of an educational setting and is titled Online Professional Development for Educators: A Case Study Analysis using Cultural Historical Activity Theory. The book will be published by IDEA Group, USA and be available in October 2006.
