2 Why study at FedUni? With choices ranging from TAFE qualifications, three and four year undergraduate degrees, and a selection of internationally renowned graduate programs, FedUni is your pathway to a successful career in engineering. A common first year of study for all undergraduate engineering programs allows you to sample each of our civil, mechanical, mechatronic and mining specialisations, providing you with greater flexibility and choice for your study and career direction. Our hands-on TAFE programs feature a strong focus on manufacturing technologies, ensuring you re ready to step into a skilled position. Alternatively, you can take advantage of our established pathways into an undergraduate degree. If you wish to pursue further study, our graduate engineering programs are renowned in the resources industry, both in Australia and abroad. FedUni offers on-campus and online study options, meaning our graduate programs can be tailored to suit your needs. Three and four year engineering degrees at FedUni With a four-year degree, you will become a professional engineer and work at a theoretical level to isolate and define a required engineering outcome. You will then identify one or more potential solutions. The professional engineer will conceptualise ways to ensure the desired outcome is met and will then work closely with an engineering technologist or other professionals, to determine the best solution. You will oversee and potentially contribute to the construction process. As an engineering technologist with a three-year degree, you will work with a professional engineer to put predetermined theory into practice and assist in identifying which solution will best deliver the required outcome. You will work in a hands-on role in the construction process. Professional Recognition Many of our programs are accredited by national professional bodies including: Engineers Australia all of our higher education programs (bachelor and above) are recognised by this peak professional engineering body. AusIMM Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy graduates of our mining engineering programs are eligible for membership of AusIMM. For current Year 12 students this means that, provided you have met the prerequisites of your chosen program of study, your achieved ATAR is not a factor in our decision to offer a place. Your study scores will indicate your eligibility for a place when you receive your school results in December. Open Access eligible programs are indicated throughout this booklet. For information about Open Access visit federation.edu.au/openaccess Matthew Cook Bachelor of Civil and Environmental (Honours) Graduate Structural Engineer I am a graduate structural engineer at Deery Consulting. We are located in Inverloch, but work in many locations spanning from Phillip Island to Warragul and Melbourne. I enjoy learning about how structures behave under different loading conditions. I recently designed a waterpark structure and completed computations using a 3D model in an advanced program. To be the principal engineer (with guidance) of such a structure is a good feeling. I enjoy my job as every day I learn something new. There are rewards of continually learning on the job. I attended a structural steel workshop in Melbourne, which was great as it refreshed my memory on everything I had learnt at University. By attending these workshops, I am able to consolidate skills I am learning in the workplace. University has developed strong foundations that apply to many aspects of my job which range from the computations through to dealing with clients. With so much of our work revolving around communication, the value of teamwork developed during my degree has definitely helped with how we work through each job in the office. 19 Liam Robertson Bachelor of (Civil) (Honours) I have always been interested in how things are constructed and I enjoy problem solving, so Civil was a good fit for me. I have really enjoyed learning about the built environment, which is all around us, and why things are the way they are. I have also thoroughly enjoyed the analysis, design and management skills taught within my course. Master of Technology (Civil/Mechanical/Mining) Entry requirements include: Candidates must possess a three year Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Technology or Bachelor of degree to be eligible to enrol in the Master of Technology program. Duration: 2 years FT or PT equivalent Note: You apply to enrol only in a stream (or discipline) which matches the stream (or discipline) in which you obtained your Bachelor degree/s. This is stipulated by the regulations set by the accrediting professional body (EA). As a civil engineering graduate, you will have developed advance skills together with the knowledge and appreciation of the environment, sustainable development, social and political aspects that impact upon the work of the civil engineer. As a mechanical engineer you will apply the principles of physics and mechanical science to the design and construction of all forms of mechanical systems. As a professional mining engineer you will oversee teams of engineering technologists and skilled trade staff to construct the designs that you have created. You will work at a theoretical level to isolate, analyse and define a required engineering outcome. Having a 12 week placement embedded within the course has been fantastic. It has given me the opportunity to gain practical experience and to put into practice what I have been learning throughout my course. I completed a 12 week paid industry placement at the end of my third year, and am now working part time with Butler Excavations here in Ballarat, while I finish my final year. The small class sizes at FedUni have really suited my learning style. Coming from country NSW, I didn t know anyone when I first arrived in Ballarat, and living on Res was a great introduction to Uni life. I have made life-long friends, and really enjoyed all the social activities here. Attending the Uni games in Adelaide and the Gold Coast have been highlights which I will remember for a long time. I recommend that everyone comes to Open Day. It was a great introduction to the Uni for me, and my first opportunity to meet the lecturers and other staff who have been so helpful to me. Stuart Cilia Bachelor of Mechatronic Systems (Honours) I was able to follow the pathway into the Bachelor degree from TAFE at the Yallourn Campus. Although I didn t originally intend on going into Mechatronics it presented a good way of moving into a career and it seemed to fit with my strengths. A major factor was the pathway into Federation University at Churchill Campus, as I didn t want to travel far or commute to the city. I am really happy with my choice and that I will have really good employment prospects when I graduate. The subjects are challenging but that s all part of the experience and personal development. What s great about the campus is that you can be in contact with as many or as few people as you want at a time, I have access to my lecturers and the Mechatronics lab is like my second home during the semester! As I am learning to work in a field at the cutting edge of technology, when I graduate there will be new developments. At this stage I would really like to be one day working in the robotics field.
