As publishers of print and online media most of our positions are connected to the areas of journalism, advertising sales and graphic design and production; also, software programmers and developers connected to our web property work. In each of these areas we look for people with a suitable base of training in the respective area, attention to detail, and strong communication skills. 2. What are the characteristics of your most successful employees? A strong work ethic. Drama-free attitude. A person equally capable working under supervision, both independently and as part of a team. An energetic attitude that contributes to their strong drive to learn, improve their skills and to succeed at any task assigned. 3. Are there any specific career tracks within the organization? In other words, what can a typical entry level employee expect to be doing in 2-5 years? Entry level can advance to team supervisors and, eventually, to department managers and senior management. 4. How would you describe the organization s culture? Progressive; energetic; vibrant; concerned with social justice; values creating a positive, fun and progressive workplace for its staff. A gay positive work environment that is not limited to gays and lesbians; we have many straight people that work within our offices. 5. Are there any opportunities for ongoing training through your organization? Professional development programs vary from department and year to year. 6. Do you recruit on a continual basis or only at certain times? Continual, though usually only when there are existing openings. It is good to hear from people that support the work we do who are interested in future employment.

2 7. Does the company have any specific plans for the next few years? Continued growth. Increased focus on web publishing and our internet properties. 8. This full-time position is an ideal entry-level career opportunity for a new or recent graduate of advertising studies. Any internships or work related experience in sales (of any type) or customer service are an asset. You relish the challenge of making a sale. As the ideal candidate, you understand that success in advertising sales results from increased revenue through ongoing account development. You can generate and implement ideas and have excellent organizational and follow-up skills. Your computer knowledge includes working with spreadsheets, contact management programs and databases. 6 FREELANCER HARD NEWS REPORTERS Xtra, Canada's premier gay and lesbian news source, is looking for freelance hard news reporters for our newspapers and website, Xtra.ca. With the support of an editor, your primary duty will be to write fearless but thoughtful news stories about Toronto's local gay community. Additionally, you may be assigned national and international news and feature pieces that are of high interest to our readers. As the ideal candidate you are an avid Xtra reader who supports our work. You have a solid background in journalism, strong writing skills and knowledge of editorial standards and libel law. You are a well-organized stickler for detail and you never fail to meet deadline. You have a strong interest in, and understanding of, sexual politics. You are often skeptical of what you read in the mainstream press and will seize every opportunity to explore our issues from unique angles. Ideally, you have some familiarity with Toronto's gay and lesbian communities and their politics, though it s not essential. There is also the opportunity to produce online video to complement your stories, so video and editing experience are an asset.
