2 Youth Service Training Calendar Youth Service The North Eastern Education & Library Board is a statutory organisation, funded through the Department of Education, underpinned by statute in the Education & Libraries Order 1986 to "Through direct provision and in support of Voluntary Organisations, the Board aims to ensure that opportunities are available for the personal and social development of young people within its area". The geographical remit covers 9 council areas: Coleraine, Ballymoney, Magherafelt, Ballymena, Antrim, Moyle, Newtownabbey, Larne and Carrickfergus. The key purpose of youth work is to enable young people to develop holistically, working with them to facilitate their personal, social and educational development, to enable them to develop their voice, influence and place in society and to reach their full potential National Occupational Standards LLUK Youth Work The Youth Work Curriculum A Model for Effective Practice NI, 2003 is our key guide to youth work practice. In order to help our young people grow and develop we must ensure that the adults who work with them in youth settings: are aware of the important role they hold; gain relevant, current information; and develop and apply key youth work skills. Our experienced youth service staff combine their knowledge of the needs of young people and youth leaders in their areas, with their knowledge of training resources and create a wealth of training courses-compiled in this booklet. The courses are of varied length and intensity, reflecting the diverse nature and needs of our part-time youth worker cohort. Many are mandatory training courses required by controlled sector staff, others are optional areas of knowledge and skill suitable for our part time and full time practitioners. We also aim to nurture the development of our young people by providing personal and social development focused training, progressing to leadership skills courses. To that aim, we have developed a wide range of OCNNI accredited courses for young people (see pages 5-8 for detail) in cooperation with all other Education and Library Board Youth Services. Course are provided free of charge to controlled sector young people and certification fees are charged to voluntary units. All of our training is of high quality and we offer a range of certification for adults also e.g. Open College Network NI, St John Ambulance, NEELB certification etc. provided by our own experienced staff or in partnership with excellent specialist providers. Our training courses not only improve our collective service to young people, but can be of great personal benefit to you in terms of: improvement of self confidence; networking with other local leaders/clubs; attaining knowledge applicable to a range of club/unit or life situations; gaining practical skills immediately applicable in your club/unit; and providing you with motivation to try fresh ideas for new activities or projects. Costs and charges are kept to a minimum to encourage participation and to reflect the effective and efficient management ethos of the NEELB. Courses are provided free for controlled unit staff. Where places are available, voluntary group participants are charged a proportional fee. This booklet provides you with a summary of our courses throughout the NEELB, information about our major courses and fine detail of courses held within specific geographical areas. Please select the course(s) that suits you, seek approval from your centre leader and complete the application form available from one of area youth offices (Office details on page 14) I hope you enjoy your training experience with the NEELB Youth Service and apply your learning to ultimately improve the lives of the young people with whom you work. 34 Outdoor Education Application for Outdoor Leadership Courses The appropriate forms can be obtained from:- The Warden Bushmills & Woodhall Centres 7 Priestland Road BUSHMILLS Co Antrim BT57 8QP Tel: Fax: [email protected] [email protected] Application forms must be countersigned, in the case of Youth Workers, by the Club / unit Leader and the Area Youth Officer or in the case of Teachers, by the applicant s Principal If a candidate finds, after being accepted for a course, that they cannot attend, they should inform the Centre accordingly so that the vacancy can be re-allocated. 34 Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Training Outdoor Education has long been recognised as a valuable means of encouraging the balanced development of young people. Adventure activities, which are part of this wider concept, are seen as a means of inculcating and developing in young people the many qualities which contribute to the personal and social development of the individual. Qualities of leadership, of taking initiative, learning to co-operate and be self-reliant, are all brought to the fore, and help to give people a sense of purpose and achievement. In addition to the development of personal qualities and acquisition of new skills, adventure activities should also embrace environmental and ecological caring of the outdoors by young people. Quality of leadership is seen as the key to effective, challenging and safe programmes of adventure activities. It is essential that Youth Workers & Teachers presenting these activities are equipped to do so safely, with sound judgement and knowledge. Towards this end, the NEELB provides the training necessary for Youth Workers & Teachers wishing to become proficient as leaders in adventure activities. The courses offered in this booklet, which are all part of the Board s In-Service Training Programme, follow a syllabus agreed between the 5 Education Boards in Northern Ireland. On successful completion of a course, leaders will be registered with their Board and recognised to operate out-of-doors at the appropriate level in their chosen discipline. Common Module Weekends From Level 2 upwards, participants in any discipline are required to attend two Modular Weekends in Outdoor Leadership and First Aid. Details are supplied in the information describing each course. However it should be noted that a Module Weekend should only be attended once; it is not necessary for a leader wishing to be trained in a further discipline, to repeat a Module already covered. Inter-Board Training Syllabus in Outdoor Education The Courses offered in this booklet follow a Syllabus agreed with the other Education Boards, in which four levels of training have been established. These range from Level 1, which is generally proficiency based and is not seen as an instructional qualification, to Level 4 which is appropriate for those working as tutors on more advanced courses within the Education Board framework. All four levels, but especially Levels, 2, 3 and 4 are free standing. Many users may find that Levels 1 and 2 meet their needs and therefore proceed no further. The advanced levels are provided for those wishing to operate in more difficult terrain where a higher level of expertise is necessary. Applicants for courses will only be accepted if it is clearly stated how they propose to use the qualification gained, in their youth club /unit or school in the following years. Youth Workers or Teachers who gain qualifications will have to re-register every three years. This process involves maintaining a Log Book giving details of their work with young people over the previous three year period. If the youth worker or teacher has not used his/her qualification during this period, their name may be removed from the database, and they would no longer be recognised as a Board instructor. Governing Body Awards and Revalidation Within each Syllabus, participants may be expected to take Governing Body Awards these are in no way a substitute for the training provided, but are seen as complementary to it.

43 Outdoor Education Kayaking and Open Canoeing Levels 1 & 2 This course extends over 8 residential weekends and offers candidates an introduction to kayaking and open canoeing. The first 3 practical weekends focus on personal skills, leading to assessment at BCU/CANI Two Star Level, successful candidates being recognised to assist a fully qualified leader. The final 3 weekends concentrate on leadership technique, culminating in an assessment for the NEELB Canoeing (Level 2) qualification. This is the basic level of leadership necessary to take young people canoeing and kayaking in approved sheltered water sites, from April to October. Attendance at the Leadership and First Aid Modules is mandatory unless the candidate has already attended those weekends on a previous training course. One of the 8 weekends incorporates the Foundation Safety and Rescue Training Course which is common to all our canoeing courses. Candidates will be expected to attend all sessions over the 8 weekends, both day time and evenings. Assessment will be continuous and considerable weight will be given to the final weekend. In addition to this commitment candidates will be required to maintain a Log Book recording canoeing experiences. It is expected that participants would need to practice over and above the course practical sessions to consolidate skills learnt during the course. This would typically constitute one halfday spent in a kayak and one half-day in an open canoe. Further information will be available on Log Books and course requirements following enrolment for the course. All applicants must be Youth Workers or Teachers who are able to swim a minimum of 50 metres, and who have a clear desire to use this qualification to introduce young people to either canoeing or kayaking. Successful candidates will be recognised at NEELB Level 2. Applicants should note that any BCU assessment fees are not included in the course fee below. Participants should be fit and water confident as this course is physically demanding and some previous experience of canoeing or kayaking would be expected.
