COURSE DESCRIPTION The purpose of this course is to introduce you to the fundamental concepts, principles, and application associated with the planning, designing, and managing a sport facility. It is a general sport facilities course covering a broad variety of topics ranging from maintenance and security operations to sport facility design principles. This course was developed with the purpose of providing you with a general overview of the planning, designing, and managing of sport facilities issues you are likely to encounter in your professional careers. COURSE OBJECTIVES As a result of successfully completing this course, you should acquire a knowledge and understanding of the various facets of administrating, planning, and designing sports facilities including: 1. program development, operation, and assessment 2. facility management, including planning, const5ruction, use, and maintenance of indoor and outdoor sports, physical education, and recreation facilities
2 3. facility marketing 4. facility law 5. facility financing from construction through operations 6. facility construction and renovation 7. facility operations 8. the responsibilities and duties of a facility manager including managing personnel 9. the role facilities play in revenue generation 10. facility changeover and other maintenance and preparation related concerns 11. crowd management and patron relations Describe and discuss the diverse forms of community, public, and media relations BLACKBOARD practice and COURSE how such STRUCTURE programs can generate revenue for sport organizations You will navigate throughout the course by using the menu found on the left hand side of the screen. You will get an announcement from me each Monday delineating the course objectives and assignments for the following week. You will also receive all course announcements to your JSU account. I will also post upcoming exams and assignment deadlines on the My Calendar box. You will be responsible for keeping up with the course announcements and calendar entries. 3 JSU Library This is an active weblink that will take you directly to the JSU library page where you can request assistance from a JSU librarian. In this course, you will be relying heavily on the online research databases and other research resources offered at the JSU library. The JSU librarians are a great resource. Take advantage of their expertise and willingness to assist you getting the information you need to succeed in this course. COURSE INSTRUCTION The instruction for HPE 567 will be done via a combination of readings, course notes, discussions, virtual meetings, and exercises aimed at providing an introduction to the fundamental concepts, principles, and application associated with the planning, designing, and managing of sport facilities issues you are likely to encounter in your professional careers. TEXTBOOKS Required textbook: Title: Managing Sport Facilities Author: Gil Fried Publisher: Human Kinetics; 2 edition (December 15, 2009) ISBN 10: *available in ebook format from the publisher ( Recommended book: American Psychological Association. (2001). Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5 th ed.). Washington, DC. COURSE PERFORMANCE EVALUATIONS 1. Exams Your knowledge of the contents of the textbook and any supplemental readings will be assessed in three exams. Exams will involve a combination of multiple choice and essay questions. Exams will be open book and will be posted for six days when they can be taken at your convenience. There will be a time limit for each exam. 2. Discussion Forums Periodically I will post topics for class discussion. Topics may include current magazine and newspaper articles on any given course related issue or a question that may require you to do some research on a given area. You are to read that information and post a thoughtful comment on that given topic or answer a specific question. You will be evaluated on the thoughtfulness and insightfulness of your comments. In addition, given that discussion forums serve the purpose of generating class interaction among students, you are expected to post thoughtful questions and/or comments to your classmate s responses.

Sport Facility Plan On this course culminating project, you will create a sport facility plan that involves the design and the operations of a sport facility of your choice (e.g., collegiate athletic program, professional sport franchise). I will post specific instructions for this assignment on Blackboard along with a rubric I created to evaluate your paper. GRADING BREAKDOWN Exams (total) 30% Discussion Forums 20% Sport Facility Plan 50% Grading scale: A = % B = 80 89% C = 70 79% D = 60 69% F = < 60% Incomplete: As per the Graduate Bulletin (p. 38): An instructor may award an incomplete grade to a student who is otherwise passing and who, for legitimate reasons, is unable to complete the prescribed work. An incomplete grade must be removed within 12 months. It is the student s responsibility to contact the instructor and complete the required course work within the specified time period. The student will be notified in writing by the Registrar s Office as soon as the incomplete has been removed. In extenuating circumstances, a student may be granted an extension. Such a request must be approved by the instructor, the department head, and be submitted to the Dean, College of Graduate Studies, for a final decision at least three weeks before the time limit expires. This Incomplete Grade Extension Request form is available from the office of the College of Graduate Studies, 320 Bibb Graves Hall, or online at If the grade of incomplete is not removed within the prescribed time period, the incomplete will be converted to a grade of F with zeroquality points. There are legitimate reasons for an incomplete. If you think you have a legitimate reason for not being able to finish this course you will have to, in writing, explain to me the extenuating circumstances which prevented you from completing the course. Your request needs to be submitted at least one week prior the end of the semester. If I judge your reasons legitimate and approve your incomplete status I will have you sign a statement that will describe what you need to do to complete the course and a reasonable timeline for finishing any unfinished coursework.

When you click the link above you will receive instructions on how to join the virtual meeting. PLAGIARISM Plagiarism is the act of passing off the ideas, works, and writings of another as one own. Its most blatant form consists of copying verbatim the work of another without citation. This most obvious type of plagiarism requires a degree of premeditation and careful planning, but plagiarism can be the result of carelessness, negligence, or ignorance of acceptable forms of citation. Any act of plagiarism is a serious act of academic misconduct. In order to avoid violations, a student must realize that any ideas, words, or material from another source must be acknowledged. It is incumbent on each student to learn the proper forms of citation and to exercise due caution in the preparation of papers and assignments and should any confusion arise, it is far better to err on the side of caution than risk leaving source material uncited. In other words, when in doubt, cite your source. (Vanderbilt University, The Honor System Handbook, , p. 7). I will be using the SafeAssign software to check the originality of your work. The policy section dealing with plagiarism is the following: Plagiarism 1. Plagiarism: 1 st Offense A student who intentionally (deliberately) plagiarizes will receive a failing grade ( F ) in the course. In addition, the student will be required to complete a remedial seminar on plagiarism. Failure to do so will result in an automatic 2 nd Offense.

Plagiarism: 2 nd Offense A student who intentionally (deliberately) plagiarizes a second time will be dismissed from the program of study, and will not be allow to enroll in any other program in the College of Education & Professional Studies at Jacksonville State University. NOTES: 1. It should be noted that the occurrence of cheating or plagiarizing is cumulative, i.e., it carries over to any other course taught in the College of Education & Professional Studies. 2.
