Today, this supply chain needs to organise its logistical operations to be faster, cheaper, more effective and more aligned to the strategy and goals of the company. Developing the professional skills to analyse and improve an organisation s logistics and supply chain will surely have a profound impact on the organisation and individual. 5 Course overview Logistics and supply chain management practice firstly provides an overview of trends and role-players, showing how the modern supply chain needs to be more integrated and effective. Creating a value chain where role-players are all connected in a causal loop is theoretically and practically explored. The course investigates international logistics and supply chain management trends like lean thinking and the Kaizan philosophy, showing how the adoption of a more effective value chain will help to eliminate the seven wastes and ensure profitability. The management of the logistics and supply chain is also unpacked, with a specific focus on the importance of maintenance management. Financial management information like analysis, costing, budgeting and reporting adds to the logistics and supply chain management skill set. The course is aimed at the practical application of information to the learner s own professional environment, giving ample opportunity to practise logistics and supply chain management tools and techniques in the professional environment. Target audience Professionals who work in the logistics and supply chain environment, whether producers, manufacturers, wholesalers or retailers. Weekly course modules Each week, for a period of eight weeks, you will be tasked with navigating your way through one module per week: Week 1 Module 1: An Introduction to the Supply Chain Environment. Week 2 Module 2: Strategic Alignment Between the Organisation and its Logistics and Supply Chain Environment. Week 3 Module 3: The Value Chain. Week 4 Module 4: Tools and Techniques for Logistics and Supply Chain Management. Week 5 Module 5: Lean Thinking. Week 6 Module 6: Optimising the Value Chain. Week 7 Module 7: Managing Logistics and the Supply Chain. Week 8 Module 8: Financial Management of Logistics and the Supply Chain. During week 9, you are given study time. During week 10, you will write your final examinations. 8

9 Overview of modules Module 1: This introductory module explores the supply chain and shows how role-players in the supply chain are influenced by global trends that require more effective collaboration and deeper levels of integration. Module 2: The organisation s goals and overall strategy is linked to the manner in which its logistics and supply chain is managed. By learning to do a SWOT analysis and utilising strategic alignment tools, the overall performance of the organisation can be improved. Module 3: This module shows how primary and secondary activities are joined together in a value chain, where each roleplayer is connected and aims to add value to the chain of activities that make up the logistics and supply chain environment. Module 4: Tools and techniques like statistical analysis, inventory management, scheduling and decision trees are discussed in greater detail, showing how role-players in the logistics and supply chain can use these tools and techniques to improve its effectiveness. Module 5: Lean thinking philosophies like Just-in-Time and Kaizan are discussed, showing how this sort of thinking can have a positive impact on the value chain, and eliminate the seven wastes. Module 6: To optimise the value chain, a lean thinking gap analysis and lean thinking cost benefit analysis are discussed. 9

10 Module 7: The principles of effective management of the logistics and supply chain are discussed, with special reference to the importance of maintenance management. Module 8: This module explains financial terms and concepts, costing, budgeting and reporting, as they pertain to the value chain. Course pre-requisites Grade 12 or matric certificate (or equivalent) is required. In the absence of this, recognition of prior learning will be considered on a case by case basis. You do not require prior knowledge of logistics or supply chain management to register for this course. This course is presented online, so you will need: Access to a computer with Internet access (with working webcam). A current address. Access to Microsoft Word. PDF-reading software. To be able to watch videos presented in this course online. All course material is in English and all assessments are delivered in English. This online course enables you to divide your time between work, family, friends and study. You must set aside five to seven hours weekly to complete each module over eight weeks of the course. 10

11 Course delivery This course is delivered fully online. No matter where you are, you can simply log into the DigitalCampus online learning portal and continue with your course. We release one module per week. Each module consists of several topics. During a typical week, you must read the topic s content and watch the videos and animations. You will also have the option to answer progress check questions. At the end of each module, you are expected to: Log into the Discussion Forum and participate in a discussion focusing on the module. Complete an assignment related to the module. At the end of the eight weeks, you are expected to study and complete a final examination. If necessary, Denise will refer your question to the lecturer, Dr Dennis Laxton. Dr Laxton will also monitor the Discussion Forum and contribute where necessary. 11

12 Assessment and award of certificate We have integrated a formative (continuous) assessment into each of the modules. These assessments, referred to as progress checks, will enable you to evaluate your own progress and grasp of the content. These progress checks do not count towards your final mark. In addition to the progress checks, you will also be expected to participate in the learning activities set out below. All these activities count towards your final mark and will be weighted as follows: Accomplishment Participation in Discussion Forum Activities 5% Assignments and Knowledge Quizzes 35% Final Examination 60% Weighting You must achieve a combined final mark of 50% to receive the Certificate of Competence from Wits University.
