1 Web Design Syllabus Instructor Stacie Erfle Room: 2023 Office: 2023 Objective This is an introductory class that will teach you the basics of Web Page and Web Site Design, and allow you to create several working projects along the way. This class will teach you the hard skills tools to create pages and dynamic sites, and the soft skills the know-how and way-ofthinking to approach and solve problems, to interact with others, be self-driven, etc. Skills and Prerequisites The class does not require any prior knowledge or experience in web page or site design. It expects the basic ability to work with a computer: word processing and typing, files and folders, naming and renaming, copy and pasting, etc. It expects students to be familiar with saving and opening files, navigating the internet and web sites, and downloading files. We will make sure to go over these things at the beginning to refresh the class and ensure we re all on the same page. Materials Most of the work will be done on a computer in class and there will be a few assignments for home. Some of the take-home assignments may require access to a computer; please talk to one of us if you don t have easy access to one. You ll also need a notebook or if you prefer a binder with lined paper to take notes. Course Outline This is a semester long class composed of several modules. Additionally, we will have Focus/Culture Topic Days within each module to add some variety and bring up other interesting aspects of computers/the internet/etc. We may vary from this outline. Module Length Title: Description 1 6 weeks Introduction to the Internet and HTML: Basic formatting of pages and organization of pages into sites. 2 5 weeks Style Sheets Week 1: Intro to the Internet Week 2: Formatting and tags Week 3: Hyperlinks Week 4: Lists & Colors Week 5: Images & Tables Week 6: Tables.

2 Week 7: Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) Basics Week 8: CSS Details Week 9: CSS Layout Week 10: Assignment/Project 3 1 weeks Javascript 4 2 weeks Personal Project 5 3 weeks Team Project Week 11: Intro to Javascript Week 12: Javascript Details This will be a web site that you design, create, and own, with weekly checkpoints, followed by a demo/presentation that you team deliver to the class. This will be a larger web site that your team of 3-4 people will plan, create, and present Grading This course will be thought in this computer lab and consists of lectures, assignments, quizzes and a final project. You will be evaluated on: 10% Attendance and class participation o Stay on task, answer questions & join the discussion, and you should have no problem getting most or all of these points. 30% Assignments/Small Projects o Homework and in-class assignments. 20% Quizzes (expected to be one per module) o These will be open notes. 40% Projects o Ample time provided in-class, but will likely require outside work. Most of your assignments will require a computer and are designed to fit in class time. Some of the work on your big projects will be outside of class time, though you will be given time in class throughout the semester to work on it. You will have some assignments that don t require a computer, usually as homework.

3 Course Policies: Honesty o Cheating will not be tolerated, school policies apply in full. If caught copying someone else's work you will receive 0 on that assignment or quiz. Looking at information online is OK Brainstorming with a friend is OK Having your friend teach you a new method is OK You MUST write all your own HTML and Javascript code You MUST be able to explain anything you have written You CANNOT copy a classmate s work Violations here will also be reported to the administration o All content you create text, images, etc. must be school appropriate. You will receive 0 on an assignment that violates this policy. o All content you use must be your own work, public domain, or properly linked to the source or quote a source. If you are not sure, ask your instructors. Assignments/Projects and Quizzes o One day late assignments will lose 20% of the grade; two day late assignments will lose 50% of the grade. Assignments later then that will not receive any credit. o Assignments that are not homework will be checked in class by one of your instructors/tas. An assignment must be checked by end of class unless otherwise specified. Please raise your hand or call us when you are done with an assignment and we ll come by. o Students are expected to be present for all quizzes. Make-up quizzes will only be given in the event of an emergency, and only if the instructor is informed in advance. Failure to notify the instructor prior to missing a quiz will result in a zero for the quiz. Make-up quizzes will be given during lab time. Courtesy and Behavior o Computer lab policies apply in this class. No food and drink are allowed around the computers. Please take care of the equipment; it is here to allow you and others to learn. o No phone use in class. Turn them off, or they will be confiscated and checked in with the office (you ll get them back at the end of the day). o No headphones, except during individual work time on projects or specific assignments. o During lecture time, eyes/ears are on the instructor. o Questions are encouraged in this class; don t hesitate to ask at any time. o Please be respectful and courteous to your fellow students, your instructors, and your workspace. Seating and Absence Policy You are expected to be in class every day. The class moves pretty quickly and your attendance is not only mandatory, but essential for you to do well. If you are sick or otherwise must be absent, make sure you get notes from classmates or talk to one of the instructors. For days you miss, you ll be given appropriate time to catch up and turn in projects/assignments (typically one day for each day missed).

Students who demonstrate proficiency of the college course competencies with a B (3.0) or better grade, may be eligible to earn college credit through the Tech Prep program. The college competencies are below. During the semester all of the college competencies will be covered in. Students must register online using the statewide enrollment and reporting system and also are required to pay a non-refundable $46 annual consortium fee to earn college credit through the Tech Prep College Connections program ( Students MUST register for Tech Prep college credit while they are enrolled in the high school course. Students learn how to locate, access, and retrieve a variety of media including text, images, audio, and video, and how to develop Web resources using HTML. Enforced Prerequisite: DMA 107. DMA 160 replaces WEBMM 110. Either DMA 160 or WEBMM 110 may be taken for credit, but not both. After completing this course, students should be able to: Explain and apply the features and elements of the Web HTML editing tool. Design Web pages with clean HTML source code using HTML editors. Apply Web tool libraries and templates to achieve a uniform look to the Web site. Create, edit, and format text. Import and customize images Edit and maintain the Web site using the site-management tools. Create and edit tables, frames, and forms. Using coding, behavior, and dynamic animation tools to make the Web site dynamic. Customize the Web tool.
