Quarantine Network for Specialised Equipment. Using Remote Desktop to get data in and out of the quarantine network V1.2 It is now possible to connect through a gateway or terminal server to PCs connected to specialised lab equipment which have been added to the quarantine network. If you require this kind of access speak to your supervisor and ask them to log a call with the service desk giving the machine name to which you require access. You will no longer require a USB memory stick to transfer data to and from these PCs. PCs which have been connected to the quarantine network can be identified by the orange network cable connecting the PC to the network point. The quarantine network is designed to provide network connectivity whilst providing a level of isolation for PCs which, for operational reasons, may not be fully up to date with security patches, anti-virus or operating system updates. This increases security whilst adding convenience when working with specialised equipment. This document outlines how you can connect from your office PC to the PC connected to the equipment and transfer data. It then describes how you can connect back from the PC in the quarantine network and transfer data back to your O: drive or research data store.
Moving data from your normal UoB connected PC to the quarantine PC. Moving data from a quarantine PC to your normal UoB connected PC. Moving data from your normal UoB connected PC to the quarantine PC. You will need to remote desktop to the terminal or gateway server from your normal PC and then in turn use remote control on the terminal server to connect to the quarantined research equipment. On a Windows 7 PC click on Start and then select Remote Desktop Connection (On an XP machine you will have find this under Start- All Programs- Accessories- Communication) In the box next to Computer type the name of the terminal server you are going to connect to- in Engineering this server is called its-zequar.cse.bris.ac.uk Click on Show Options Enter the terminal server name its-zequar.cse.bris.ac.uk in the box next to Computer: In User name type your normal username. (If the machine is not UoB joined then prefix your UoB username with uob\ e.g.uob\cecth Check Always ask for credentials, if unchecked then it will try and connect with local accounts that don't have access to the terminal server. (Windows XP - Do NOT check Allow me to save credentials)
Windows 7 Windows XP Click on Connect on the General tab Once connected to the quarantine terminal server you will then connect on to the quarantine PC: click on START select Remote Desktop Connection Click on Options Enter the computer name in computer field. This is normally the same as the service tag of the machine followed by the suffix quar.bris.ac.uk. The name will thus be something like ITxxxxxx. quar.bris.ac.uk where ITxxxxxx is the service tag of the PC. (Use this link for how to identify the service tag of the PC: ) In some cases this may not apply- it is also possible to identify the name of the PC by right clicking on My Computer, selecting Properties and then the Computer Name tab
Click on the Local Resources tab and then the More button at the bottom of the tab.
You will then be able to expand the Drives section and select your O: drive. This will be viewable as the area to move data from when the connection is made. You can then move data thus avoiding the need to walk information around on USB sticks which are vulnerable to loss and viruses.
Back on the General tab enter the local user name on the quarantine machine prefixed with.\ This will normally be user so type:.\user (If in any doubt as to which user name and password you should use please speak to your supervisor) Click Connect When prompted enter the password for the account. If you have been told that the user account has no password then this remote connection will not work and you will receive an error saying Unable to log you on because of account restriction. This is by design; for security reasons you will only be able to login remotely if a password has been specified for the account. (Please contact your supervisor to confirm the password)
The first time you connect you receive the prompt below. As we trust this connection we can click on Yes to complete the connection from the terminal server on to the quarantine PC Once you are logged on to the PC connected to the specialist equipment you can run My Computer or Windows Explorer and view your O: drive in addition to the hard drive of the remote PC. This will allow you to move data from your O: drive to the remote PC thereby avoiding the requirement to use a USB stick to walk the data to the lab. The O drive is shown as O on ITS- ZEQUAR (this is the same as your normal O drive) and the hard drive of the PC connected to the equipment is also visible. These are both highlighted below.
Moving data from a quarantine PC to your normal UoB connected PC When logging on to the PC which is connected to the specialised equipment you will be using a local account rather than your normal UoB user name. It is likely you will be logging on to the PC with an account called User. If in any doubt confirm this and the password with your supervisor. There is a Remote Desktop shortcut on the desktop of the User account called Transfer Files Remote Desktop which can be used to transfer files from the hard drive of the PC connected to the equipment and on to your O: drive. These are both highlighted below.
Alternatively the notes below can be used to configure a connection Double click Transfer Files Remote Desktop Click on Show Options Enter the terminal server name, which in Engineering is its-zequar.cse.bris.ac.uk In the User name box you need to prefix you UoB username with uob\ e.g.uob\iswch Windows XP - Do NOT check Allow me to save credentials
(On Windows 7 check Always ask for credentials, if unchecked it will try and connect with local accounts which don't have access to the terminal server). Windows XP Windows 7 Click on the Local Resources tab Click on the More button in Local devices and resources
Check the local drives (normally C:) that you want to see when connected to the terminal server Example: if need to copy data from Local Disk (C:) then check the box next to the disk as shown below Click OK
Click Connect on the General tab Viewing local disk of the research equipment on the Terminal server Once connected you will be able to see the local drive(s) of the quarantine machine: Click on the START button Click My Computer Expand Computer in left navigation or click on Computer in left navigation and you will be able to see the local C drive of the PC you see when looged on to your normal PC (see and you will see the drive(s) available on the quarantine machine. You can then move data from the local hard drive of the PC connected to the specialised equipment to your O: drive or other suitable research data store. This data will then be accessible from your normal UoB PC. In this case we selected the C drive on the quarantine machine. The C on IT is the local C: drive on the quarantine computer which is called IT You can open this and display the contents of the drive, and copy the data from here to either the O: drive (My Files) or to one of your Network Places such as the Research Data Store. These are both highlighted below.
