3 Why Study IBML? Domestic saturation, rapid diffusion of ICT and a hypercompetitive and rapidly changing environment. Senior managers must be able to conduct their business effectively in international and global markets. Detailed understanding of business theory and practice, the skills to adapt to diverse international business practices and the knowledge and ability to be sensitive to differences in culture and language.

4 Aims of the Course Equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to develop a career in an international business environment. Equip students with fluency in a modern language and knowledge of the political, social, cultural and economic environments of those countries. To provide a supportive learning environment within which students have the opportunity to fulfil their academic potential. Equip graduates with the knowledge and skills needed to undertake further study in Management or in related disciplines.

5 Achieving the Aims Research-informed teaching Academic staff who teach on modules are research active in each of their respective field of interest. Diverse range of teaching modes and methods Large and small group teaching, computer assisted learning, industry visits, guest lectures, modules taught in study language. Placement experience Apply knowledge to a real-world setting and reflect on practice(s) in final year.

19 Entrance Requirements A-level AAB + GCSE Mathematics grade B. For French option: normally A-level French grade B or AS-level French grade B. For Spanish option: normally A-level Spanish grade B or AS-level Spanish grade B or GCSE Spanish grade B or evidence of linguistic ability in another language. Note: if the language is studied at a higher level then the grade required at that level must be achieved.

21 Should English Be the World s International Language? If English is the world language, it could burn away the cultural differences that make our world so interesting Our entire concept of everyday reality is shaped around language. If you speak multiple languages, you start to see things in many more shades because some concepts just cannot be translated, directly or indirectly. According to studies by Bruck, Lambert, Tucker (1974), Hakuta (1986) and Weatherford (1986), children enrolled in foreign language courses demonstrate stronger cognitive skills, particularly in the area of creativity. An added bonus: those with competency (not necessarily fluency) in more than one language tend to have higher intelligence scores on standardized tests. Language, more than anything else, defines a people. You can t fully understand a culture without first learning the language. (Dipp, 2008)

22 Should English Be the World s International Language? Foreign languages are also important to those working in business, communications and nearly every other career track. Even if your potential clientele speak English, there isn t a better way to understand their needs and cultural desires than to learn their language.
