Online Program The program is available online at Overview Parallel sessions The parallel sessions are composed of five different session types. AFFILIATED SOCIETY SESSIONS feature presentations that were selected and arranged by one of the three societies which join ETS each year: the Adventist Theological Society, the Evangelical Philosophical Society, and the Near Eastern Archaeological Society. DISCIPLINE SPECIFIC SESSIONS are composed of presentations that were submitted by ETS members and rated by a panel of scholars who served under the direction of the program chair. These presentations have been grouped into basic disciplines: Old Testament, New Testament, Systematic Theology, Church History/Historical Theology, and Practical Theology. PROGRAM UNIT SESSIONS are a combination of invited papers and proposed presentations which were selected by the program unit steering committees. ETS has three types of program units. Consultations are new program units which are responsible for 1 session of invited papers at the meeting. Study Groups are narrowly focused groups which require active, collaborative participation by the group members. ETS encourages study groups to publish the results of their work. Study groups are responsible for one session of invited papers at the annual meeting. Sections are broadly defined groups that represent general areas of interest. Responsible for one session of invited papers and one session of papers drawn from member submissions, the sections offer the most access for unsolicited papers. THEME SESSIONS are composed of presentations submitted by members, which address the conference theme. These presentations were evaluated by a panel of scholars under the direction of the program chair. The theme presentations have been arranged into cohesive sessions based on texts, topics, and methods. CAREER SESSIONS are special sessions that are designed to help ETS members in their careers. These sessions include discussions of the academic job market, publishing, interviewing and other significant career development topics. 67 th Annual Meeting // Marriage and the Family 3
3 LETTER FROM THE PROGRAM CHAIR Welcome to the 67th Annual Meeting of the Evangelical Theological Society The theme of this year s conference is Marriage and the Family. With the recent Supreme Court decision about what constitutes marriage, our focus could not be more timely. Such a pragmatic topic needs rigorous academic and biblicallygrounded examination. The issues related to marriage, family, sex, gender identity, and the like have seen almost unbelievable redefinition via political and social engineering in just the last few years. Thoughtful, grace-and-truth imbued articulation from a thoroughly Christian perspective is desperately needed in our post-christian world. I stand in awe of our sovereign God s design of having this theme at ETS this year, since the themes are planned out years in advance. ETS is the right venue for this topic because the issues touch everyone s life and the best answers to today s troubled conundrums must come from those with a high view of scripture and a heart for people. We have four plenary speakers at this conference who will address a variety of topics related to our theme. Each of the following scholars were chosen because of their expertise on their assigned topics. Dr. Everett Worthington, of Virginia Commonwealth University, will speak on forgiveness in marriage, a much-needed topic in light of the divorce rate among believers. Dr. Myrto Theocharous, at the Greek Bible College in Pikermi, Greece, will address the sex trade and what believers can do to help rescue these girls from their enslavement and bring them to Christ. Dr. Wesley Hill, Trinity School for Ministry, will discuss what the Church s relation to the homosexual community is and what it should be. Dr. John Trent, at Moody Theological Seminary, will address raising Christian children in a post-christian world. As expected, hundreds of significant, stimulating, and erudite papers on the main theme as well as scores of other topics are also on the program this year. We anticipate rich academic fellowship, irenic yet profoundly engaging dialogue in a sola scriptura community, edification of heart and mind, and much to meditate on at our conference in Atlanta. Thanks are due to the ETS Executive Committee, program unit committees, and the many volunteers who culled through a myriad of proposals for this conference. Without the labors of these folks, the annual meeting would take on a haphazard, amateurish hue. We are especially indebted to Mike Thigpen, the Executive Director of ETS, his wife Bonnie, and their hand-picked team of dedicated servants who work out the extraordinarily complex logistical details, weaving them into an orderly, efficient tapestry. Mike is responsible not just for the annual program, but for the administration of the Society year-round. He is the unsung hero of the continued growth and success of ETS. Atlanta, here we come! I look forward to seeing you all there. Daniel B. Wallace Senior Professor of New Testament Studies Dallas Theological Seminary Executive Director Center for the Study of New Testament Manuscripts 4 67 th Annual Meeting // Marriage and the Family
