Student can choose between attending Sunday service and lunch at Northridge or they may elect to read and report on the fourth required text (Seven Practices of Effective Ministry). COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is an interdisciplinary study of the application of biblical, theological, ecclesiological and missional issues in relation to the gospel, the church, and the Christian life. OBJECTIVES The student who successfully completes this course will demonstrate the following competencies: 1.) The student will be able to explain how their ministry can remain biblically faithful while reaching people for Christ in a culturally relevant manner.
2 2.) The student will be able to recognize the importance of the gospel for both believers and unbelievers. Students will be able to articulate an understanding of the gospel and will be able to implement this doctrine into their own ministry context. 3.) The student will be able to accurately analyze and evaluate the differences between various values driven models of church. 4.) The student will further their leadership capabilities by learning appropriate steps they can take when implementing philosophical and programmatic changes within their own ministry setting. REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS Driscoll, Mark. Radical Reformission (Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2004). ISBN Rainer, Thom S. and Eric Geiger. Simple Church (Nashville, TN: B&H Publishing Group, 2011). ISBN Stanley, Andy. Deep and Wide (Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2012). ISBN *Stanley, Andy. Seven Practices of Effective Ministry (Sisters, OR: Multnomah, 2000). ISBN *Reading Seven Practices of Effective Ministry is conditional. Student can choose between attending Sunday service and lunch at Northridge or they may elect to read and report on the fourth required text. COURSE REQUIREMENTS 1.) Attendance and Participation. Each student is expected to attend all conference sessions and to attend and participate in the Dinner and Dialogue with the Northridge Staff. Enrollment in the conference will include admissions to the Dinner and Dialogue with the Northridge Staff at no additional charge to the student. 2.) Reading Assignments and Reading Reviews. Each student is expected to read all textbook readings as indicated in the syllabus. A reading review will be required for each book. Each review will include the book s bibliography as well as the affirmation of your completion of the required reading (or what percent of the book has been read). The review will be no less than two pages (double spaced) and will include one page with a summary of the author s purpose and main ideas as well as your positive and negative critiques. The second page will include your reflection summarizing lessons learned and specific life/ministry application. The reading
3 reviews must be ed to Jake Kallman on or before 11:59 pm (ET) April ) Personal Interaction Paper. Students will complete an 8 page analytical paper in which they must thoughtfully reflect on the Acts 16:5 Conference, Sunday services as well as Lunch and Dialogue with the Northridge Staff and reading assignments. Students must interact critically with what they learned at the lunch and conference and how this learning can be applied to their life and ministry. In your paper, students should address a minimum of five takeaways from the conference/reading and include a minimum of three developed points for each takeaway (ex. How is this method different from what I ve used? How will I implement change? How will this be received by ministry peers or those in my ministry context?). The personal interaction paper must be ed on or before 11:59 pm (ET) April 30 to Jake Kallman (jkallman@northridgerochester.com). COURSE GRADING Reading Assignments (10%) and Reading Review (50%) due April 23. Personal Interaction Paper (40%) due April 30. The grading scale for this course is the following and is consistent with the Grading Scale found in the BBS Academic Catalog: A = B- = 87 D+ = 76 A- = 94 C+ = 86 D = B+ = 93 C = D- = 70 B = C- = 77 F = Below 70 No late work will be accepted except in the most extreme circumstances.
