2 4 5 Dental Hispanic Student Dental The Hispanic Student Dental (HSDA) is delighted to share our mission discuss our latest chapter activities. Our mission is to provide service, education, advocacy, leadership for the elimination of oral health disparities in Hispanic communities. The Hispanic population is one of the largest fastest growing populations with more than 50.5 million people identified as Hispanic (00 U.S. Census). And untreated decay is nearly twice that of non-hispanic people including adults children. The population size is great but the disparity need for oral health care is far greater, which is what HSDA hopes to accomplish, eliminate oral health disparity. last years! Last year, we recruited a record number of student membership that has led to a total of 6 active student members, an average of 4 outreach events per year, strongly compete in national conference demonstrating our community involvement, gained more recognition popularity among faculty students. These recent events activities would not be possible without our very active enthusiastic student members, so a mucho gre gracias (very big thank you) to all participating students! UCSF HSDA is evolving rapidly still needs help from active passionate students to help carry on our mission to successfully eliminate oral health disparities in Hispanic communities. Although, we are very proud of the improvements growth made these past couple of years we are very excited to see what the coming years bring! Our organization would also like to take this opportunity to remind students that we wholeheartedly welcome help from all people regardless of racial/ethnic background. If you have any questions or concerns about our organization, or would like to learn more about how you can participate join, please feel free to contact us at [email protected]. 3 4 5 Dental American Student Dental ASDA chapter at UCSF has been keeping busy all quarter both on off campus Our active board of officers has dedicated a lot of time effort into engaging our members in organized dentistry developing exemplary leaders in ASDA. This quarter, our members have enjoyed numerous lunch n learns on a variety of topics, fun community service events with children, the ASDA National Leadership Conference in Chicago, District meeting in Los Angeles, our rd Annual IDP Applicant Day at UCSF. We are excited to continue spreading the ASDA spirit inspiring our members to embody ASDA s core values: community, engagement, integrity, passion. ASDA is the nation's largest student-run association for dental students, representing more than 0,000 students attending U.S. dental schools. That's approximately 89% of the dental students in the country. Some of the benefits of membership include free $50,000 in life insurance $,000 in disability insurance, subscriptions to ASDA News Mouth, discounts on products services to help students through dental school. ASDA members also receive automatic membership into the ADA. This membership allows students to attend the ADA conventions for a discounted rate, receive publications regularly, such as the Journal of American Dental, discounts on airfare car rentals, opportunities for credit card loan programs. The $75 membership fee is paid only once each year. Dual ASDA ADA membership is a worthwhile investment in the student's career. It combines a single voice with those of the professional student colleagues to create a more powerful statement. -Tiffany Hsu, 5 ASDA Chapter President Picture above: ASDA s 0-04 Board Members
4 Dental Community Dental Clinic CDC Continues 0-year Legacy By: Mindy Li (D) This year, 0, marks the 0-year anniversary of UCSF Community Dental Clinic (CDC). Starting off in 99 as an adjunct to the UCSF Homeless Clinic with UCSF School of Medicine, dental care capacity has transformed from a small dental chair in the MSC Homeless Shelter to a self-sufficient 6-cubicle operation at the UCSF Dental Center. CDC is proud of its strong history, excited in continuing its efforts to provide free quality care to the community. October marked a new year for UCSF's Community Dental Clinic. As UCSF School of Dentistry ushered in the dental class of 07, CDC also welcomed in a fantastic new group of D Coordinators: Brian P Lee, Caitlyn McGue, Jasmine Manubay, Jeffrey Delgadillo, Jeffrey Proniloff, Ruth Yan, Sepi Shafa. The CDC legacy continues with these bright dental students as they plan for a fundraiser the annual toiletries drive. Our current CDC Director, Heather Wong (D), has high hopes for CDC. Working with the UCSF Endodontics specialty this past summer, she scheduled additional sessions to include Endodontics treatment. Traditionally, there have been fewer Endodontics sessions over the summer, but by increasing CDC's care capacity, more patients can have their pain relieved move along in their treatment plans. CDC works with multiple homeless shelters in San Francisco to take care of patient's dental needs. These patients are screened selected to be seen at CDC with the purpose of full-mouth rehabilitation. Patients begin with a diagnostic comprehensive oral evaluation, within the course of 8-0 appointments, all their acute general dental needs are addressed as best as possible. For example, Patient A comes in with dental pain receives a needed extraction, Endodontic treatment a crown, a cleaning, carious teeth restoration, a stay plate designed to restore the patient's smile. With this system, CDC sees about 0 patients at a time, all at various stages of their treatment plan, as soon as one patient's treatments are completed, a new patient will be brought in for their full mouth restoration. With this method, all patients receive the dental attention they need leave UCSF CDC with a rehabilitated smile. In 0, CDC was awarded the ADA Bud Tarrson Dental School Student Community Leadership 0 Award, receiving $5,000 for their efforts in serving the community. The money has been allocated to help continue CDC's operation in serving the homeless population's dental needs. Along with the award, the Bud Tarrson Award benefactors visited UCSF School of Dentistry on November, 6, 0 to tour the dental school CDC clinic. The Dean's office prepared a warm UCSF welcome for the distinguished visitors, as they toured the CDC clinic, they were able to see how CDC is run meet some of the patients receiving treatment. This quarter has been a strong continuation of collaborative efforts by coordinators, faculty, student providers assistants to treat the underserved homeless population in San Francisco. Our hopes for the future of CDC is to continue providing quality comprehensive care as well as exp our sources of funding to maximize the amount of free dental care we provide to the community. The CDC family would like to thank the UCSF dental community for all their contributions to CDC. Happy Holidays! 4
5 Dental Dental Cosmetics Club The Dental Cosmetics Club is dedicated to exploring the realm of cosmetic dentistry through lectures, guided instructions, social events. Cosmetic dentistry is not yet a dental specialty, so the specialized techniques, materials, procedures done by cosmetic dentists different than those done by a general dentistry are left up to the dentist themselves to learn. The Dental Cosmetics Club aims to streamline this information provide students a resource to discover an array of cosmetic procedure utilizing multiple specialty skills including prosthodontics, orthodontics, others. American of Women Dentists The UCSF American of Women Dentists (AAWD) chapter is off to a great start in our third year as a recognized campus RCO. With approximately 5 members the support of numerous female faculty, we were proud student representatives at the 0 National AAWD conference. On campus we organize lunch learns, social events outreach opportunities. This past quarter members presented to middle school students at an Exping Your Horizons conference geared towards interesting young females in science related professions. We have also connected female alumna with current students to discuss practice management career development from a women's perspective, last year we hosted an informal discussion on women in research. This winter our focus is on women in academia! Overall, we've attracted significant interest from the female male dental students on campus are excited to grow as an organization. However, we are only as strong as our members rely on mentors for ideas experience. If you would like to become an involved part of our chapter please the current AAWD president at [email protected]. 5
6 Dental Dental Students Students Inaugural Inaugural The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) hosted our first Lunch n Learn lunch seminar on Oral Surgery Complications presented by Dr. William Choi. The speaker was charismatic knowledgeable, which was well-suited to convey the wide range of procedures available to a general dentist with proper training. In fact, it appears that Dr. Choi left a lasting impression on multiple attendees as they were surprised that Dr. Choi was a general dentist not an OMFS graduate. More important than the 50 attendees who have attended our meetings, is the 50% increase of returning attendees compared to our first general meeting (Figure ). This suggests growing interest from dental students in learning more about AGD what it has to offer. With a relatively even distribution of attendance between D, D, D s, the AGD at UCSF is working to discover the interests of soon-to-graduate D4 students in order to increase their participation in the future (Figure ). Academy of General Dentistry Figure Figure Smiles for Seniors Smiles for Seniors is an organization at UCSF dedicated to serving the needs of the elder population in the San Francisco Bay Area. Third year dental students Jessica Woodson Nina Mohazzab started the organization in the Spring of 0 after noting the large underserved population of senior citizens throughout the Bay Area. Numerous outreach groups existed at UCSF but there were none solely dedicated to the needs of the elderly. Sensing a need, Smiles for Seniors was born began the process of establishing itself as a resource for the senior community. Getting a new organization going is always tough but after seeing the way the senior community has responded to the outreach has motivated Smiles for Seniors to continue to grow exp. No one has been more grateful than the seniors who have attended each event. These seniors care deeply about their oral health come loaded with questions comments about their hygiene habits. Past events include oral health talks at local seniors centers, senior health fairs serving lunch to the senior community. Each event has been more successful than the last the members of the organization have found it to be something truly rewarding to be a part of. There are future plans for screenings other activities at many local senior centers throughout the coming year. Smiles for Seniors is always looking for friendly faces to help improve the lives of the elderly community! Please contact us at [email protected] for more information on how to help! 6
