The pioneer in hospitality education recently inked an articulation agreement with Hotel and Tourism Management Institute Switzerland and International College of Hotel Management, Australia in February and May respectively. These agreements allow for credits transfer into selected programmes in the universities. These 2 universities are the latest additions to existing articulation partners in Australia, New Zealand, UK and USA. Please refer to our website for the full list of articulation partners. 4 SHATEC Takes On a New Look A pioneer in hospitality and tourism education, SHATEC has seen more than 30,000 graduates pass through its doors in the last three decades. The Singapore-born icon has produced several prominent alumni whose names are well-known in their respective industries both locally and internationally. SHATEC recently underwent a $3 million upgrade of its 65,000sq ft campus at Bukit Batok to provide an even more conducive environment for students. 6 WSQ Best Trainer Award 2013 Winner The WSQ Best Trainer Award recognises adult educators who have passionately walked the WSQ journey with their trainees to help them boost their skill levels and employability. We caught up with this year s winner, Mr George Koh to hear him share his passion in bringing out the best in people. 1. How do you feel about winning the award? I have seen many people winning the award through the years, but I never have the intention to participate. One day, my colleague Chef Niwaz just came to seek my permission to submit my name for the WSQ Best Trainer category and I agreed. The win was a pleasant surprise but to me, it is never about myself as I have already fulfilled my dream in my more than 3 decades of teaching career. In fact, I feel happier for SHATEC as this will add to her long list of awards and accolades, especially when the school celebrates its 30th year anniversary this year. 2. Describe your typical day at work Currently, I am a part-time trainer at SHATEC. Despite being part-time, I still work every day but enjoying every moment of it. My previous appointment as a Vice Principal (Institute of Culinary Skills) was taxing and I had little opportunities to engage my colleagues at a personal level. But now I have more bandwidth to mentor and coach fellow trainers. I now see things from a different perspective and can communicate with peers better. 3. What are your best memories at SHATEC? I started working for SHATEC since 1984 at the Nassim Hill campus. The school then shifted to Mount Sophia and finally moved to our existing campus at Bukit Batok. My fondest memory was to work under the guidance of SHATEC s founder, Mr Parkir Singh, a visionary man who earned immense respect through his work and achievements. I remembered that there was this mischievous student who vandalised a classroom and gave problems to classmates and trainers. He looked like someone who will drop out of the programme anytime but I persisted to counsel and coach him. He eventually graduated. The best thing about being an educator is knowing that you make a difference in people s lives and they succeed in their careers. This problem student is now a regional chef managing a chain of restaurants in Malaysia! Mr George Koh Trainer, SHATEC 4. Do you have any advice for trainers? Being able to manage one s emotions and not letting it affect your work is very important. Be confident and lead by example to inspire others to do likewise. Mr Pakir Singh never reveals his emotions even when things are not smooth sailing. Actions speak louder than words for what he has done for SHATEC and the Singapore Hotel Association, which makes him a role model for all of us.
