3 CSUDH Library Enhancement Campaign A New Library for California State University, Dominguez Hills Primed to move forward in educating the next generation of students, California State University, Dominguez Hills is embarking upon a Capital Campaign, perhaps the most significant since the University s founding. Introducing a New Library for a New Century The library is the temple of learning, and learning has liberated more people than all the wars in history. -- Carl T. Rowan Designed to propel the California State University, Dominguez Hills Library far into the 21 st Century, the Library Enhancement Campaign will provide for the most significant infusion of state-of-the-art learning tools since the Dominguez Hills Campus opened its doors nearly 50 years ago. Providing expanded learning space, computer labs, compact shelving, archival preservation areas, group study rooms, wireless laptop access, the library will more than meet the twin library goals of maintaining topnotch modern technological resources within a traditional academic environment. No other entity on the CSUDH Campus serves the diverse needs of students and faculty as Page 3

4 much as the library. From distance learning nursing students to student art teachers, the library embodies the century s old traditions of scholarship Photo of 1910 International Air Meet held near the CSUDH campus. From the University Archives Photo Collection as well as the lightning fast changes internet technology brings to learning. Whether the future of periodicals and books are in print or on an electronic screen, the gateway to that information for CSUDH students and faculty has always been the library and its librarians. Designed to be student and technologyfriendly, the library addition will double existing library space while being dominated by windows that open up onto an outdoor garden patio. The patio will allow access to wireless computer technology and a coffee/refreshment kiosk that will serve as a gathering Page 4

5 Olympic Velodrome built for the 1984 Olympics From University Archives Photo Collection place for students. Accommodating the needs of students as well as the challenges of providing access to growing technologies, the new CSUDH library will be energy efficient and integrate enough flexibility for library growth and changes in library collections and bibliographic needs. The Current Library Built in 1970, the Leo Cain Educational Resources Center/Library is the most prominent structure on campus. The library began collecting books, various media and archival collections in the 1960s. Now, closing in on 50 years later, the library has reached its maximum capacity for handling both books and the reference needs of students. The new addition will not only improve access to all library sources, but also create the best place on campus to study, research and collate the knowledge necessary to succeed in today s marketplace. The Library has long outgrown its stack space. There are not enough chairs and cubicles for study and not enough areas for computer labs, group study or bibliographic instruction. The University Library has nearly half a million volumes serving the needs of students, faculty, researchers and local residents. In addition to Page 5

6 standard reference and circulation services, the Library has extensive offerings of electronic journals, microforms, graphic materials, sound recordings, video recordings and film materials. The library subscribes to over 1900 serials. The library s bibliographic instruction program offers students classes in use of electronic databases and other research tools. Despite movement toward an electronic environment in today s library, the services provided by the Dominguez Hills Library revolve around a basic premise: information is the key to success for today s students. The 21 st Century Library at Dominguez Hills serves and will serve as the focal point for access to books, periodicals, electronic periodicals and databases, training in information competency, scholarly archival research, services to off-campus students, access for students in need of assistive technology, and access to internet sources. The New CSUDH Library CSUDH Library Extension/Addition will consist of a 140,000 square foot five story addition to the south side of the existing library. The addition and the existing library space will provide sufficient space for 12,000 students. An additional 1600 reader stations will accommodate students. Areas for three additional computer learning labs, state-of-the-art archival storage and reading areas, an events center/gallery, a multicultural reading room, and a doubling of book stacks and compact storage. The new library will have close to 250 computer workstations. A Center for Teaching and Learning will provide faculty development services in the addition. The new five story structure will be connected to the existing Leo Cain Educational Resources Center by glass bridges. The North side of the new structure will be dominated by windows providing indirect lighting for the reader stations. Between buildings a large courtyard will allow for a relaxed outdoor learning environment. Page 6

Passage between the new building and the current library will be enclosed by windows and doors that provide access and views of the library s new garden patio. The Third Floor: Periodicals Center Reading Area/Book Stacks With the CSUDH Periodicals Center, an undergraduate reading area, and extensive bookstacks, the Third Floor will be connected to the current library via a glass bridge and will greatly Page 7

This floor will be connected to the main building by an open air bridge. room, multicultural collection reading room, and a reading area that will convert into a Community Events Center. The University Archives and Special Collections Department has been collecting materials since the late 1960s. The Archives collection consists of CSUDH records, local history collections (South Bay, Compton, Dominguez Family) and the Glenn Anderson Congressional Collection. The Archives is also the site of the California State University System-wide Archives. The Community Events Center will host receptions and library lectures. 9 recognition for major donors contributing over $25,000. Artists s conception west view Recognition of Campaign Contributions The arrival of a new library on the Dominguez Hills campus presents a wide variety of opportunities for recognizing special contributions to the Campaign for Library Enhancement. Among the unique funding opportunities are technological advances needed for the Grand Reading Room, appropriate environmental controls for preserving Providing space for students to study together and work on team projects will be group study rooms ($7,500 each). Students, faculty and staff needs will be assisted by new meeting and work rooms ($10,000-$25,000). One wall of the new library will be dedicated to recognizing donors to the Campaign. All contributors of at least $250 will be recognized by name. All contributors to the Campaign, regardless of gift amount, will be listed in an official Roster of Donors which will be permanently bound and maintained by the library. Meeting the needs of students and faculty as well as building a library of significance that CSUDH historical collections in Archives and Special Collections, appropriate lighting in the public gallery and meeting space, and state of the art compact shelving, traditional wall shelving in the Diversity Collection Room and the meeting room in the Archives. More characteristic of a library are rooms and floors dedicated to study, teaching and research at CSUDH. Many of these rooms are available for Artist s conception of Garden Level Page 9

10 Students in 2nd floor group study area of current library incorporates new technology will require support from private sources. The Citizens of California have generously funded construction of the library through Proposition 55. While this funding from Californians is significant, it is insufficient to fully fund the facility and amenities envisioned for the library. The Campaign for Enhancement being conducted over the next two years by the University Library and the campus seeks to fulfill essential needs not covered by construction. The objective is to raise $4,000,000 in gifts from individuals and business organizations throughout the state. Architectural Firm To double the size of the library within a relatively small parcel of land and to create a beautiful and energy efficient building, CSUDH sought out architects with library experience and design excellence. The new addition is being designed by the eminent architecture group Carrier Johnson. They have designed university libraries throughout the Western U.S. These include libraries at San Jose State, UC San Diego, CSU San Marcos, and the University of Utah. Other major projects include the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice at the University of San Diego. Carrier Johnson has designed and overseen the construction of over twenty million square feet of space since Page 10
