1 ucl.broward.edu University / College Library Annual Report PRIMO goes prime time a joint-use facility for Florida Atlantic University and Broward College August 8 was our cutover date for the unveiling of the new ExLibris catalog interface known as PRIMO. More than two-thirds of all state colleges in Florida (22 of 28) are now providing the Primo software-based version of LINCCWeb to their students. The UCL librarians did extensive testing of the search results before recommending the cutover. The change took place during the extended break between the end of summer and start of the fall 2012 term. New and improving... Coffee Shop is still in the works as we await the opening of a Dunkin Donuts in the remodeled southwest corner of the first floor. The doors to the FPL room on the exterior of the building were replaced since the old ones were deteriorating from water damage. The bid was awarded for the refurbishment of the elevator in LRC. Work to start in January The former microform room (160) has been repurposed as a quiet study area with the addition of some wet tables and display cases for some of the museum collections. New printer on - provided wireless printing for direct printing from student laptops
2 Annual Report As I come to work each day I am reminded of a phrase on a poster I saw many years ago We are living in a world of permanent change. The irony of the oxymoron struck me at the time, but the reality of the sentiment resonates in me now. Changes in libraries continue at breakneck speed. Our mission to provide access to information remains the same; how we do it changes. This year we enhanced our selection workflow so that our librarian selectors can do more electronically, eliminating paperwork. As e-book options improve, we evaluate and opt for e-versions for example, most of our reference titles are now ordered in e. We expanded our leisure collections to include DVD and audiobook titles to rave reviews! We added a new scanner with state of the art touch interface. We virtualized in-house support applications for statistics, time clock, calendars, and deep freeze. We hired an adjunct librarian to work with online and international students in their virtual environments. As a joint-use venture, we continue to adapt systems and access so that all students and faculty from the College and the University benefit from the vast resources and student-centered services we provide. Jackie Archives... lessons in American history to be learned from what happened right here in Broward County... a great opportunity to demonstrate to students the value of archives, and that not everything can be found online. This story can fit words. The subject matter that appears in newsletters is virtually endless. You can include stories that focus on current technologies or innovations in your field. You may also want to note business or economic trends, or make predictions for your customers or clients. If the newsletter is distributed internally, you might comment upon new procedures or improvements to the business. Sales figures or earnings will show how your business is growing. Some newsletters include a column that is updated every issue, for instance, an advice column, a book review, a letter from the president, or an editorial. You can also profile new employees or top customers or vendors. DSpace Video Repository Palm Beach State Librarian Susan K. Setterlund was a volunteer in U/C Library Archives & Special Collection during summer 2012 to fulfill her requirement for the University of Arizona Library Science Capstone project. Susan piloted the DSpace Video Repository a collection of historic Broward College videos created by the college Publicity Department. The project was a collaboration between several U/C Library departments, includ- ing Archives & Special Collections, Library Automation, and Technical Services. This project served as a pilot for the Institutional Repository to collect, preserve and make accessible the historic electronic output of the college. Page 2
3 ucl.broward.edu Literary Feast Our 4 nd Annual Literary Feast hosted by the University/College Library was held in the new Visual Arts Building on the Central/Davie Campus on November 1, The purpose of the event continues to be to provide an awareness of the talent and creativity of the professors who teach at BC and FAU as well as to provide an opportunity for students to interact and engage with professors as scholars outside of the classroom. Professors who participate are available in an informal setting to answer questions from students, staff, and faculty about their work. Every year this event grows: the 3rd annual drew 20 participants and 273 attendees. Information Literacy Faculty Librarians have developed several unique information literacy sessions: SPN 1120 & 1121: unique because it is taught entirely in Spanish. Spanish resources such as WorldBook Hispanica, Mango and Informe Revistas are presented. APA Boot Camp: the Basics (1-3 times a semester): open to all stu- dents, staff and faculty who wish to learn the basics of APA Style. Embedded Librarian: an Ethno botany class assignment gives the librarian the opportunity to foster critical thinking skills about the materials the students are required to use for their sources. RN to BSN Nursing: two 1-hour sessions a day with each cohort. The first hour focuses on research; the second covers APA style. Englishlanguage learners: English language learners familiarize themselves with the library during at least two sessions for an introduction to the concept of academic library in the United States and then for hands-on practice to search and find library resources. Welcome New Staff Simone Williams, Adjunct librarian Patrick Nunez Rauber, Faculty librarian Celia Roberts, LRC Tutoring Lab Manager Yogesh Paghdar, LRC Evening Supervisor Johnathan Faubert, LRC ESL Lab Manager Page 3
