1 welcome to gr3000 Welcome to the Level 3 German (GR3000) course offered by Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu. overview of gr3000 Your language learning will follow various themes, such as German people, events, stories, media, creative arts, modern life and history. This course follows level 8 of Learning Languages in the New Zealand Curriculum. It also revises some of the content of level 6. The course prepares you to gain 19 Level 3 credits for your National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA). You may also gain five additional Level 3 credits if you wish to complete the conversation assessments for Achievement Standard German 3.3. You can gain nine of the 19 credits from the internally assessed activities in this course. The rest of the credits come from externally assessed activities. This course can be endorsed with Merit or Excellence if in a single year you gain 14 or more credits at Merit and/or Excellence within Level 3 German. At least three of these credits must be from externally assessed standards and three from internally assessed standards. German is a subject that can count towards University Entrance. German is also a Scholarship subject. Te Kura is offering no separate preparation course for this, but your teacher will give you advice on what to revise and prepare in case you want to sit the German external Scholarship exam. 2 GR3000CA

2 getting started how this course is delivered GR3000 is a print-based course, with course material and supplementary material accessed from the online teaching and learning environment (OTLE). Dual enrolled students are expected to access material from OTLE. Other enrolled students may request printed materials to be posted, accepting there will be a delay between enrolment and receiving the first posting. You will receive an explaining how to log in to OTLE. This includes a link to set your password if you have not logged into the OTLE before. You can access OTLE by clicking on It is recommended that you bookmark this site in your browser. This will take you to a page with links to your courses. Your username and initial password is your Te Kura student ID number. You will be asked to set a new password when you first log in. After that, if you need to reset your password you can click on the Forgot password link on the OTLE login page. If you have difficulties logging in, please [email protected] organising your study Plan a regular time to study. Some people learn best from frequent short sessions while others do better with fewer, longer sessions. It is important to have a plan or a timetable and to keep to it. There is a suggested course plan in the back of this guide to help you plan your programme of study. You may wish to consult with your subject teacher to help you decide on your plan. Getting your study underway is very important. Your first return of work should be two to three weeks after you received your initial work. If you have any issues returning your work within this time, please contact your subject teacher. For more information on how to study successfully, refer to the Student Guide to Years ( resources you need Te Kura booklets and supplements Te Kura writing portfolio pack optional: Te Kura conversation portfolio pack Te Kura audio files (on audio CD or on OTLE) Te Kura video files (on CD-ROM or on OTLE) CD player or computer that can play audio and video files the ability to record audio files in.mp3 or.wav format (for example, computer with audio software and microphone or mp3 player), telephone. Oral activities can be submitted either on a USB stick (flash-drive), a CD or by (as an.mp3 or.wav file). A computer with internet and access is highly recommended. NZQA no longer accepts cassette tapes, so spoken work for achievement standards must be sent to Te Kura in digital form. Cassette tapes cannot be accepted for achievement standard assessments. GR3000CA 3

getting started You also need a dictionary. This can be an online dictionary (for example, Google translate) or a paper one. The Collins Paperback German Dictionary is recommended in that case. A very small dictionary is not helpful, because it can t give you enough information and may sometimes give you the wrong meaning. A grammar reference is a good idea. We recommend the following: Schaum s Outline of German Grammar by Elke Gschossmann-Hendershot (McGraw-Hill, 1996) which contains clear outlines with practice activities. choosing topics and standards NZQA advises that a one-year course should lead to credits. You may only wish to study for some standards. For example, you may want to do only internal standards for this course. You should look carefully at the course outline and make your choices. It is important to consider how well this will meet your learning goals (such as gaining enough credits to achieve your NCEA Level 3, or whether you are working towards course endorsement, or meeting the entry requirements for your tertiary course or any future study). To be awarded University Entrance you must have: NCEA Level 3 Three subjects at Level 3 or above, made up of: 14 credits each, in three approved subjects Literacy 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of: 5 credits in reading 5 credits in writing Numeracy 10 credits at Level 1 or above made up of: achievement standards specified achievement standards available through a range of subjects, or unit standards package of three numeracy unit standards (26623, 26626, all three required). To see the list of approved subjects refer to: To see the list of standards which count towards University Entrance literacy refer to: To see the list of standards which count towards University Entrance numeracy refer to: level-1-requirements/lit-num-subjects/ You should discuss your options with your learning advisor and/or your teacher. 4 GR3000CA

getting started self-assessment Many activities are self-marked. You ll find an Answer guide in each resource. Use these answers to mark your own work and make corrections where necessary. Self-marking is important as it gives you instant feedback on how well you understand the ideas, concepts or information that have been covered. assessment Students are required to send in their self-marked and teacher-assessed work. Teachers return student work with feedback and advice in preparation for NCEA internal and/or external assessments. Internal assessments/assessment for this course are: writing portfolio activities (for example, GR3001Y1) optional conversation portfolio activities (for example, GR3001Y3) a spoken presentation (GR3006Y3). The detailed criteria for Achievement Standards will be given in the relevant resources. They can also be found by searching the subject and level in the NCEA part of the NZQA website (www. nzqa.govt.nz) and then finding the relevant standard(s). AS91552 German 3.5 is the writing portfolio achievement standard. You will write a number of different texts as you work through your booklets and your GR3000W portfolio pack. You then choose which ones you would like to include for your portfolio, and let your teacher know. Your teacher will guide you on which pieces of writing show your writing ability in a variety of texts and are the best to submit. There is no further assessment opportunity, or a resubmission option, for this achievement standard. AS is the optional conversation portfolio achievement standard. If you intend to enter for this standard you need to let your teacher know. Your teacher will then send you the GR3000C portfolio with all the relevant tasks. AS is the spoken presentation achievement standard. You will receive this with booklet GR3006. External assessment preparation includes: working through your booklets to develop your listening and reading skills practice with previous external assessments Te Kura practice examinations. GR3000CA 5

getting started time commitment There are six booklets in this course. Each booklet indicates how many study hours it is likely to require. For example, booklet GR3001 may take approximately hours of work to complete at the normal pace, representing about two to four weeks of work at five hours per week. If you are to achieve at Excellence level, it is likely that you will have to study substantially more than the suggested guideline. Before deciding on the pace of learning, read through this Course and assessment guide and ask yourself the following: How much time can I set aside for study each week? Will I be attempting both externally and internally assessed standards? Will I be able to keep a steady pace of five hours of study each week? Do I intend to sit the external examination at the end of the year? Do I need specific external or internal credits for next year s study or work? normal pace of learning As a guide, expect to do at least five hours work per week in this subject. This means completing about two booklets each term so that you complete the course before the external examination at the end of the school year. flexible pace of learning If you have less than a year because you start later or need to finish earlier, you can decide the pace at which you work. You could still complete the whole course by devoting more time and effort to it. Your teacher can ensure that you receive the resources you need in time to do this. cover sheets The back cover of the booklet becomes the cover sheet for your work. Fill it in, sign it and attach it to the front of your work before sending it back to Te Kura. If applicable, your supervisor also signs the cover sheet as part of our authenticity requirements. All students are encouraged to submit as much as possible of their work online via the OTLE Dropbox. When work requires authentication, students will follow the instructions provided in OTLE. te kura codes Your course code is: GR3000. GR is the code for German and 3 refers to Level 3. GR3001 refers to a booklet that covers a particular learning topic in the GR3000 course. GR3001Y1 refers to the first assessment for an Achievement Standard (AS91552) for GR3000. AS is the code for Achievement Standard. queries about your work It is important to contact your teacher if you have any queries about your work. It helps to have your ID number, booklet code (for example, GR3001) and the activity or question number when you contact your teacher, but it is not essential. 6 GR3000CA

You can your digital files to your teacher or burn them onto a CD and send the CD with the rest of your written work. 12 GR3000CA

6 assessment information standards GR3000 offers credits from Achievement Standards which count towards NCEA Level 3. Please refer to our Student Guide to National Certificates or Te Kura and New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) websites for more information about National Certificates of Educational Achievement and assessment: internal assessment GR3000 offers five Achievement Standards that are internally assessed. This means that your teacher sets and marks all assessments that count towards credits gained for these standards. If there are two assessment opportunities for a topic, one is called Y1 and the other is called Y3. For example, a writing portfolio assessment for AS91552 is coded GR3001Y1. A conversation portfolio assessment is coded GR3001Y3 to distinguish it from a writing portfolio assessment. There are no further assessment opportunities for either of these standards. For Level 3 German, the spoken presentation standard is the only one that has a second assessment. GR3006Y3 is the first assessment for AS91549 and there is a further assessment opportunity in GR3006Y4. external assessment External assessment means that an external examiner marks your assessment work. This may be through the NZQA examinations at the end of the year. You will be able to complete practice assessments and Te Kura practice examinations for external standards. te kura practice examinations You should complete the Te Kura practice examinations for any external standards with an end of year examination you have entered. It is important that you complete all practice external assessments and examinations. If for some reason, such as illness, you are unable to sit the NZQA examinations at the end of the year you will only be eligible for consideration for a derived grade (compassionate consideration) if you have completed the Te Kura practice examinations. resubmissions for internal assessments If you have made mistakes in your standard assessment activity, your teacher may offer you one resubmission opportunity. This means you have made errors that you are capable of discovering and correcting by yourself. A resubmission allows you to correct your errors and improve your result. further assessment opportunities for internal assessments For some standards, you may be able to complete a second assessment called a further assessment opportunity to improve your results. These standards are indicated in the assessment summary. You should take this opportunity where it is available. GR3000CA 13

assessment information authenticity Authenticity means that students complete and submit work that is their own. When you submit work to Te Kura, you sign an authentication declaration that the work you are submitting is your own work and was done under the required assessment conditions. Where applicable, your supervisor signs to confirm this declaration. When submitting work online via the OTLE Dropbox, if it requires authentication, students must follow the instructions provided in OTLE. derived grades (compassionate consideration) If for any unexpected reason you are not able to sit your end of year examination or to submit final work towards an external standard (portfolios or projects), you may be eligible for a derived grade. Please refer to the Student Guide to National Certificates and contact your teacher or learning advisor as soon as possible to find out more should you feel this is necessary. appeals You have the right to query an assessment result if you want further clarification or disagree with the result. If you are still not satisfied, you may appeal. Refer to the Student Guide to National Certificates for more information. You can also appeal any other decisions, procedures or policies about assessments. Contact your teacher or learning advisor if you wish to appeal. Further information and a form that students can use to appeal is available on the school s website in the Student toolkit area ( and go to Student toolkit). new zealand scholarship New Zealand Scholarship examinations are designed to extend very high achieving Level 3 NCEA students. 17 7 how to get the best from the course booklets The booklets are yours to keep, so you can be really active in your use of them make notes, highlight things you want to remember, write your corrections on the page so that you can learn from your mistakes, add things you hear on the CD that aren t in the booklet. audio files Listen to the files as many times as you want. If you don t get something the first time, go over it until you do. Almost all the German you hear is spoken by a German speaker, so the more you listen and use it as a model for practising aloud, the more your brain will absorb and remember the sounds, the rhythm and the tune of real German. You will need a quiet room where you can listen to the files and practise speaking out loud. checking You will check most of your own work in the answer section at the back of the booklet. This gives you immediate feedback so that you can learn from your mistakes. It is important that you do this carefully. Compare your answers with the model answers. If your answers are different, go back to your booklet and go over the explanations so you know where you went wrong and how to improve. Then correct your answers in a different coloured pen. Writing out the corrections helps you remember them better and if done in a different colour you will be drawn towards them when you do your revision. If you are still unsure after doing this, ask your teacher for help. revision When you are speaking or writing a foreign language, you can only use what you can remember, so it s important to learn as you go and revise frequently daily, weekly, monthly. Revising a little bit often is more effective than a big chunk of revision less often. written work and special german characters Hand-written work is perfectly acceptable, but you are welcome to use a computer if it s more convenient and if you have a German keyboard or know how to use the special German letters: Ä Ü Ö ä ü ö ß. Below are different options on how to create the special German characters on the computer. If you re doing a lot of word processing, you might like to create your own shortcut keys. In Microsoft Word on your computer (a PC or a Mac) you can do that by going to the toolbar and clicking Insert and then Symbol. In the box that pops up, check that it says normal text in the font box. Click on the letter you want and then click on Shortcut Key and follow the instructions that pop up in the new box. Check in the bottom left corner where you are making the changes (you can make them for only one document or for everything you type on your computer). Don t forget to press Assign key before you leave that box. If you don t want to create your own shortcuts and you don t want to go to the Insert menu every time, you can access the special letters using combinations of keyboard keys. In Microsoft Word on a PC, for the Umlauts, press Ctrl + Shift + ; simultaneously and then the letter you want. For the ß, press Ctrl + & simultaneously and then s. GR3000CA 15

how to get the best from the course In Microsoft Word on a Mac, for Umlauts, press Option + u simultaneously and then the letter you want. For ß, just press Option + s simultaneously. Another alternative is the international code for special characters, which also works with programmes. You need to use the numbers on the right hand side on your keyboard and you need to make sure that the Numbers Lock key above those numbers is switched on. Keep the Alt key pressed down while typing the numbers. ä = alt Ä = alt ö = alt Ö = alt ü = alt Ü = alt ß = alt german and the internet Your teacher may send you additional information on what and how you can access additional German materials online. The Goethe Institut has a lot of good material online. The website is: If you want to search for other websites, go to a search engine and type in German lessons. If you are searching websites in the German language, remember that most of them have the ending.de (Deutschland), for example, Berlin.de Remember that you can also use online dictionaries and language tools. A good example is: contacting your teacher Ring the free phone number of Te Kura and ask for your own teacher. If you don t know your teacher s name, ask for the senior teacher of German. To your teacher, the address of Te Kura teachers follows the format: [email protected] Most teachers have a Skype account as well. You might need to exchange Skype details via before you can Skype your teacher. When you contact your teacher, give her/him your name and your ID number. If your call is regarding specific course work, say which booklet of the course is the basis of your phone call. overseas students Please contact your teacher or the senior teacher by , rather than phone. 16 GR3000CA

8 year planner: ncea level 3 german Here is a suggested one-year plan. The suggestions are based on the assumption that you are going to be enrolled for a full-year course at the beginning of the school year, study all the content and attempt all the standards offered. However, you may enrol with Te Kura part way through the year and continue your studies the following year. You may choose to select only some of the topics and standards depending on your circumstances. Feel free to discuss your individual programme with your subject teacher who will be willing to adjust the programme to suit your needs. You should send work in every month. If we don t receive work within two months at any time of the year, you will be withdrawn from the course and cannot be re-enrolled during the remainder of that year. You also need to work through your course booklets unless you have negotiated an alternative with your teacher. Only sending in assessments is not in the spirit of the standards and you won t be able to gain credits if you don t do your course work.
