As the leading force in creating the Amarillo Museum of Art, she lived by her belief that there is a known need for cultural enrichment in our area... and understanding of art in all its phases. B E T T Y B I V I N S C H I L D E R S When the Childers Place Contemporary Art Collection was organized in 2007, the desire was to provide more than just an inviting home environment showcasing artwork reflecting the Texas Panhandle. The 22 pieces, largely by artists connected to the panhandle area and the Southwest, prompt varied emotional responses and provide a therapeutic element. Disbursed throughout the two-story home, the artwork invites residents, as well as their families, into community and conversation. Each piece of art was thoughtfully chosen to engage elderly viewers, including those who are visually and cognitively impaired, stimulating creative thought and reviving memories. MOVING 1

3 RODNEY CARSWELL As the Wood Turns Acrylic on Canvas, 66 x 66 Rodney Carswell is a professor at the University of Illinois School of Art and Design in Chicago. He utilizes a process of layering surfaces with a mixture of oil-based paint and wax, creating a remarkably luminescent effect. 4 GEORGE BOGART Golden Oil on Canvas, 60 x 70 Bogart was born in Duluth, Minnesota. He taught at the University of Texas, Penn State University and the University of Oklahoma, where he continued to teach art until his retirement. 5 ELAINE DE KOONING Betty Bivins Childers Oil on Canvas, 30 x 40 A visiting Professor at the University of New Mexico in 1957, Elaine de Kooning devoted much of her career to portraitism, including this portrait of Betty Bivins Childers as well as a portrait of President John F. Kennedy. The president was assassinated during the creation of the portrait, impacting de Kooning to the degree that she stopped painting for a year. 6 location 5: lower level lobby VICTORIA TAYLOR-GORE First House 18 x 24, Pastel on Paper Victoria Taylor-Gore has exhibited her work professionally for the past 20 years in Santa Fe, Taos, New York, Dallas, Los Angeles and China. 6 VICTORIA TAYLOR-GORE Two Houses Pastel on Paper, 18 x 24 Long reoccurring images in my work include the boat as a vessel of the spirit, the ladder as a means of ascent, sky and water as symbols of another world beyond this one, the house as the symbol of the self, and the road and river as a means of passage. - Victoria Taylor-Gore 8 location 7: lower level admissions suite - waiting area 9 location 8: lower level admissions suite office SAM SCOTT Violets and Lemons 14 x 18, Oil on Canvas Sam Scott moved to Santa Fe in 1972, and continues to maintain his studio there. I believe that Nature is a teacher. Like nature, I desire my paintings to slowly become beautiful and then, remain beautiful. They invite a dialogue that s ever new over time, a source of energy and meaning. - Sam Scott

7 HAZE DIEDRICH Pull Up and Away Oil on Canvas, 48 x 53 Haze Diedrich, an artist from Colorado, describes himself as an abstract painter of memories that touch on the mechanical, biological and the poetic nature of life. I work in a fashion that requires constant analysis of the visual impact of color. DEBORAH HOUSTON Gate #6 24 x 34, Mixed Media Deborah Houston earned both a master of art and a master of fine art degree from West Texas A & M University. 8 DEBORAH HOUSTON Refer to Chart Mixed Media, 18 x 24 Deborah Houston begins each piece of art with a digital print, layering it with objects she has digitally scanned. She then prints the digital image and glues the print to a panel to serve as the canvas on which she adds traditional art elements. 12 location 11: lower level admissions suite office TOM TOPERZER American Idol II 34 x 102, Ink, Paper, Soluvar Varnish Canvas Making art has been a passion for Tom Toperzer since childhood, and it continues to be the focus of this local artist s life today. In his career, he has been a curator/director for four art museums and a commercial art gallery, including the Amarillo Museum of Art. 13 location 12: lower level hallway between lobby and coffee shop

9 JIM WAID Romero Pools Oil on Canvas, 66 x 84 Born in Oklahoma and raised in New Mexico, Jim Waid s paintings often start on a table, where he uses brushes, combs and kitchen spatulas to pour, scrape, brush and smear. One of his goals is to create the sensation that the life of the painting is taking place before the viewer s eyes. 14 location 13: lower level coffee shop wall 15 location 14: employee bistro BONNIE SIEBERT Paris in the Twenties 16 x 20, Acrylic Bonnie Siebert juxtaposes the prairie and farms of her west Texas home with the streets of Paris, the gardens of England and the markets of Germany in paintings that present a magic, merry world of naive but serious hope and enchantment.

10 SCOTT FRISH Our Recovery Digital C Print with Encaustic, 23 x 31 Scott Frish teaches printmaking, computer art and fine art foundations at West Texas A & M University. He is also one of only a handful of fine artists to use the newly developed large format digital chromogenic process called Lightjet. SCOTT FRISH Tandem Verses 42 x 52, Digital C Print with Encaustic Frish combines appropriation, layering and drawing in his poetic images. 11 JOHN LADD Lillies of the Lower Gresham Watercolored Photograph, 30 x 42 John Ladd is a photographer, collector and printmaker from the Texas Panhandle. His subject matter involves the characters and landscape that make up his everyday existence. His work is known for its humor, edge and use of light. 18 location 17: upper level community room CHRISTIAN PRICE FRAZER Song 36 x 48, Acrylic and Charcoal on Canvas Christian Price Frazer is a formally trained artist and holds her degree from The University of Texas at Austin. Her art can be found in corporate and private collections across the U.S. Frazer is also co-owner of Vida Gallery and Studio, which is housed on historic Route 66 in Amarillo. 19 location 18: spa and wellness center waiting area

12 CHRISTIAN PRICE FRAZER & TOM TOPERZER Angelos 14KT, 18KT & 22KT Gold Leaf with Red Oxide Clay Ground on Wood, 12 x 144 While working together to curate the gallery at Childers Place, Christian Price Frazer and Tom Toperzer also teamed up to create a calming, spiritual yet religiously unspecific art piece for the chapel. 20 location 19: upper level - chapel 21 location 20: upper level hallway by reception desk HAZE DIEDRICH Gave Her Love 48 x 53, Oil on Canvas Art remains a storyteller s passion, and my stories are filled with passion, heartache, redemption and the paintings are the resultant struggle. I have removed the figures and the simple cause and effect story to explore how we remember an event through color and shape, texture and surface history. - Haze Diedrich

13 KENNETH HOLDER Spring Rider #4 Acrylic on Canvas, 30 x 30 Kenneth Holder, born in Heald, Texas in 1936, focuses much of his work on contemporary landscape painting. His paintings are realized through a combination of memory and a desire to locate the human presence in the natural environment. Bivins Foundation to seek out primarily current artists with the help of local artists Tom Toperzer and Christian Price Frazer. Special thanks to these two artists for their dedicated and insightful work in hand-picking each piece in this diverse and vibrant collection.
