1 opportunities for EXHIBIT SUPPORT and CORPORATE SPONSORSHIP HELEN REDMAN The Other Side of Birth A mother speaks to her children through generations. - Terry Tempest Williams Art Gallery
2 The Other Side of Birth, Helen Redman s series of paintings and drawings on motherhood ( ) will be shown at the San Diego Mesa College Art Gallery, March 10 - April 14 and then "rebirthed" with new selections as Through a Mother's Eye at the Women's Museum of California, Liberty Station, San Diego, April 23 - May 31. The consecutive shows are designed to show the magnitude and variety of a prodigious journey to the other side of birth. Spanning six decades of art, each painting is a lifeline that pulls the artist and us through pregnancy, the sudden death of a young child, the birth of two more children and, later, the arrival of three grandchildren. Through colorful portraits, we witness each child grow and transform as the artist documents their pastimes, their passions, and their imagined and re-imagined identities. Motherhood calls us into an ecstatic celebration of life. It also pulls us into terrifying confrontation with fragility and loss. Rarely are we asked to face birth and death and to honor both with equal reverence. To get a glimpse of the vast array of material the shows cover visit the Children and Grandchildren galleries at: Green Emotion, oil pastel, 43 x 30 inches, 1964
3 We are seeking financial and/or in-kind support to ensure the success of The Other Side of Birth and Through a Mother s Eye, as well as a variety of related community receptions and educational programming scheduled throughout the three-month run of these two shows. Thousands of people will visit the Women s Museum of California at NTC Liberty Station in Point Loma and San Diego Mesa College Art Gallery in Linda Vista during the length of these two exhibits in March, April and May. Exhibits and corresponding programming will be attended by families, students, artists, historians, tourists, and community leaders. We have a targeted marketing campaign to attract media attention and recognition. It is the mission of Mesa College Art Gallery to enrich and engage the student community through art. The Women s Museum of California educates and inspires current and future generations about the experiences and contributions of women. This important exhibition honors six decades of Helen Redman s work devoted to daughters and sons and the continuous creation of what it means to become a human being. Please consider a level of partnership appropriate for you or your organization and for which we sincerely thank you. We look forward to seeing you at our opening events at both the Women s Museum of California and San Diego Mesa College Art Gallery. 4 ABOUT THE ARTIST: Helen Redman is an internationally exhibited figurative painter, mixed-media artist and educator whose work spans six decades. Since the early 1960s, Redman has been creating, teaching and presenting art from a female perspective that explores body image, personal identity, and life cycle experience. Reoccurring subjects include pregnancy, mothering, loss, various stages of her children's growth, gender identity, menopause, and aging. Redman s work is included in the permanent collection of the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, New York; the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, Colorado Springs, Colorado; and the Rose Medical Center, Denver, Colorado. She has taught at the University of Colorado and the University of Iowa and has been an active force for women in the visual arts since the 1970s, when she co-founded Front Range Women in the Visual Arts in Boulder, Colorado. After moving to California, she became the first president of the San Diego Women s Caucus for the Arts in 1990 and received their Honor Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Visual Arts in Redman received her MFA from the University of Colorado in Helen Barchilon Redman resides in San Diego with her husband, author/musicologist Kenny Weissberg. She is the mother of Paul Barchilon and Nicole Barchilon Frank, and the grandmother of Shira, Issac, and Ethan Frank. In honor of her first child Paula Barchilon ( ), Helen helps women through the grief process as a co-facilitator of the Families Helping Families Mom s Support Group at the Jenna Druck Center, San Diego. The art is in compressing attention to each little and big blossom of the tree of life. --Marge Piercy Helen and Paula, photo by Arnold Gassan, 1963
