4 I. PRELIMINARY REMARKS The information compiled in this report is from telecom companies and Internet Service Providers. This report is subject to alteration in case of any updates from the operators. Subscription in this report is defined as active subscribers that have generated revenue within three months. II. SUMMARY This is a second quarter 2013 report; it covers the period from March up to June. It includes information on mobile telephone, fixed telephone, internet, and tariff (voice call tariff, and data tariff), traffic, revenues, investment and employment. In this period under review the mobile telephone subscribers increased from 6,039,615 to 6,415,343. This portrays an increase of 5.9%. Similarly, the quarter recorded growth in mobile penetration rate to reach 60.9% from 57.3 % recorded at end of the previous quarter. This is mainly attributed to the new mobile telephone subscriptions. Fixed telephone subscriptions in this quarter under review were found to be 42,800 which represents 0.40 penetration rate. On internet data segment, the number of internet subscriptions is 1,232,389 that represents the internet penetration rate 0f This shows an increase of 27% in internet penetration rate; this increase is mainly brought about by the widespread of use of mobile data. 5 1. MOBILE AND FIXED TELEPHONE SUBSCRIPTIONS As of June 2013, the major players in mobile telephony include MTN Rwandacell, TIGO Rwanda Ltd and AIRTEL Rwanda Ltd. MTN Rwanda is still leading in terms of mobile subscribers with 56% of the market share followed by Tigo which has 30%, Airtel Rwanda has the lowest market share of 14%. EMPLOYMENT IN TELECOMMUNICATION SECTOR AS OF JUNE people are employed in Telecommunication sector, 783 are permanent staffs and 44 staffs are temporary staffs. 17% of these staff are women and 83% are men as it is shown in the following figure.
