Reference Material The 7 Habits of Highly effective teenagers, Sean Covey [SC], Franklin Covey Co, 1998 (handouts will be available related to material from the book). A Fireside Book published by simon and Schuster Baccalaureate Student Hand Book Course Objectives: All freshmen students must take University 100. This course will help students to make the best use of their years of the university study at FC College (A Chartered University). This course will allow students to explore and practice the various skills necessary to succeed in a liberal arts university. The students will get sufficient practice in using English language, note-taking skills, observing rules against plagiarism, applying principles learned in one area to another, asking questions and thinking critically, and following the core values of FCC (A Chartered University). Course Requirements: Attendance is REQUIRED according to the university policy. Students must arrive at class on time and those coming after 10 minutes won t be allowed unless there was an emergency and instructor was informed before the class. Students should remain in class for the entire class period and could only leave if there is an emergency but instructor must be informed in advance. If there is a genuine reason for coming late and not possible to inform the instructor then please stay outside, lecture briefing will be given. Inside the class room Mobile phones will be turned off and no one will sleep. Students will be assigned reading and writing assignments. Late submission of assignment will result in deduction of points for the assignment. All students are expected to do their own work on all assignment. Academic dishonesty or plagiarism/cheating will result in zero points (grade F) and will be referred to AIC (Academic Integrity Committee) at FCC for necessary action (Refer to Page 39, Baccalaureate handbook). Learning Outcomes: On completion of the course, the students will be able to:

2 1. Value the liberal arts education including the general education. 2. Appreciate the importance of punctuality, being present and engaged in all classes, meet-ing deadlines for assignments. 3. Take effective and efficient notes while listening to a lecture and reading a text. 4. Read on a topic from different sources and collate in own words what the authors are try-ing to convey. 5. Do his/her own work and exhibit principles of academic integrity, especially citing refer-ences appropriately. 6. Use the library effectively and efficiently to search for information in both print and elec-tronic forms. 7. Set realistic goals for self and manage time appropriately. 8. Ask questions reflecting critical, creative, and analytical thinking. 9. Follow and live by the core values of the university at all times. 10. Make presentations that reflect major skills learned. Course Content: The contents is devided into five main sections: 1) Introduction to the university experience which will focus on the one hand on the nature and purpose of liberal arts, emphassizing the value of general education; and on the other on attandance, puncuality, participation, assignments, assessments, and pride in one's work; 2) Language Skills which will focus on reading for understanding, note-taking skills while reading and listening to a lecture, presentation skills, creative and analytical thinking; 3) Academic Survival Skills which will focus on knowing and following university procedures, time management, setting goals, active listining, using the library, and being involved in critical, creative and analytical thinking; 4) Academic Integrity which will focus on doing one's own work, methods of citations and referencing, and avoiding plagirism and 5) Core Values which will focus on understanding the Shared Commitment document, and integrating FCC's core values in all aspects of one's life. Course Evaluation: In Class Activities 40% Out of Class Writing Assignments(2 of 2 pages each) 20% Reflective Journals (Weekly feedback) 20% Reading logs/records 10% Presentation (1) 10% Class activities include written and oral assignments, class participation, simulations, discussions, and group work. Reflective journals entries every week and will be checked 4 times in the semester. Assignments submitted subsequent to the designated due date, without an appropriate reason will result in the subtraction of 5 unit points from the total number of points for a particular

3 assignment for each late day. All work on the assignments must be computer generated, no hand written work will be accepted. All students are expected to do their own work on all assignments. Academic dishonesty or plagiarism will result in the assignment of F'' for that assignment.
