1 Management 341 Organizational Behavior - Management Spring 2015 Syllabus and Course Schedule INSTRUCTOR INFORMATION Gukdo Byun Office: Rehn 219 Hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:00 10:30 (and by appointment) Office phone: *** gukdo.byun@siu.edu*** CLASS INFORMATION Tuesdays and Thursdays 11:00 12:15 Building: Lawson Room: 101 Course Description The study of behavioral issues in management, including analyses of individual, group, and intergroup relations under a broad range of organizational settings. Includes discussion of theory, cases, and managerial applications. Prerequisites: MATH 139, ACCT/MGMT 208, MGMT 304. Restrictions: College of Business majors or minors, junior standing; or departmental approval required. Course Overview This course is designed to introduce theories and principles of individual and group behavior typically faced in today s organizations. This course seeks to enhance your understanding of why some organizations are able to motivate their members to achieve greater success while others fail in the same competitive environment. In addition to the basic problems of employee motivation, leadership, and decision-making, emphasis will be given to issues such as diversity and individual differences, attitudes and behavior, job satisfaction, interpersonal communication, stress and coping, group performance, power and politics, and overcoming resistance to change. The course format primarily includes lectures, small group discussions, exercises/activities and video cases. Objectives To develop and demonstrate a basic understanding of major concepts, practices, and theories of organizational behavior. To successfully apply major concepts, practices, and theories of human behavior to the resolution of individual- and group-level problems within organizations. To identify, acknowledge and evaluate your own assumptions, attitudes and beliefs about organizational behavior. To enhance your awareness of a wide range of potentially biasing factors that can influence perception, attribution, attitudes, judgment, and decision-making, and increase your ability to either minimize the influence of such factors or use them to your advantage. To develop an appreciation for the promises and pitfalls of groups and teams, as well as an understanding of strategies for getting the most from group situations.

ISBN COURSE POLICIES Class Participation/Preparation This is an experiential learning class. You are expected to be prepared each day to actively participate, not only in class, but in your small group s discussion topics and exercises as well. Participation and communication are important skills in any organizational setting. You must be able to effectively share your ideas to be successful. Students who do not make substantial contributions to group discussions and decisions, and to the class, will receive reduced participation points. Attendance You are expected to attend all sessions. Your participation in class discussions and group decisions are an integral part of learning for this course. Successful work depends largely upon regular class attendance and small group participation. Daily attendance will be documented using group rosters. Each group will be provided an attendance roster during every class session. Absences will be evaluated on an individual basis. To receive an excused absence, you must present appropriate documentation to support the required absence. If an absence is expected, notify me the day before the absence, via an message (for documentation purposes) using the proper address. If you are aware of a planned absence ahead of time, let me know, but also provide a courtesy reminder via (for documentation) the day before the class. Unexcused absences = LOSS of your ACCUMULATED GRADE by 5 POINTS EACH MORE THAN 6 Unexcused Absences = Automatic loss of one letter grade at the end of the semester. An unexcused absence means you are placing your assigned group s grade in jeopardy through your non-participation. This policy will be strictly enforced. Anyone who signs on behalf of other students in the class for the attendance sheets, once found, will get all his/her own attendance scores revoked.
3 Sleeping, Texting, Laptop, Game Playing, or Leaving Early If you are observed sleeping, texting or game playing in class, your participation grade will be reduced. Laptop, tablet, smartphone and other devices are not permitted to use during class, excepting only when instructor gives a permission to use some devices for study. If you are observed leaving class before being dismissed without prior approval, you will be given an unexcused absence, even if you have signed the attendance roster. Absences on Exam Dates Exams: Exams may be made up for excused absences only! Proper documentation is required. Advanced notice is preferred, if possible. Exams missed due to an unexcused absence may not be made up; therefore, you must take the Exams including final. SIU Online You are expected to check SIU Online often for new information. Some assignments may be submitted via SIU Online. I will use SIU Online to send mass information. Assignments Ignoring a due date will jeopardize receiving the maximum points available for the assignment. All assignments must be turned in on the date/time assigned, AND in the manner specified for the assignment. This includes the medium (hard copy or electronic) and the format (see Papers below).. Late assignments, or missed presentations will result in a lower grade. Additionally, please be on time for class. Attendance is taken at the beginning of each class. Papers All papers are expected to be well written, clear, concise, free from grammatical errors, thorough, and well documented. Papers are to be turned in on the assigned due date. They will be MS Word documents, DOUBLE-SPACED, with one-inch margins, using font size 12 and Times New Roman, unless otherwise specified. All assignments MUST BE ATTACHED AS WORD DOCUMENTS. Plagiarism/Cheating/Academic Honesty You are responsible for the authorship or your papers and/or oral presentations. Therefore, you must uphold the principles of academic honesty and adhere to those guidelines. Papers that show signs of plagiarism and/or improper documentation of sources, you will receive a failing grade. If you are caught cheating, you will receive 0 points for that assignment. GROUPS Students will be assigned to groups of 4-6, depending on the final class size, and based on psychological preferences for small group discussions and class exercises. All members are expected to participate in his/her assigned group to the fullest extent.

Each will consist of 50 multiple choice questions (2 pts each). Exam 3 =Final (100 points) Final will consist of 50 multiple choice questions (2 pts each) that cover all class topics. Assignment (50 pts): All assignments including in-class and take-home potion Group Video Presentation (50 points) Students in their teams will show a seven to ten minute video clip, which illustrates some aspect of organizational behavior, leadership, or introduces an individual the student feels represents a leader and lead a discussion which relates to concepts we have covered in class. This should be no longer than 20 minutes. A 2~5 pages paper outlining the content will be submitted with bibliography. Group Discussion (30 pts) and Self/Peer Appraisal in group (20 pts) Group Discussion (30 pts): Group will be evaluated by group activities (discussion, group activities, teamwork, group presentation, group participation, group debate, group assignment).
5 All group members in each group will be given the same points based on their group performance. In every class, instructor will evaluate each group s performance and will finalize in the end of semester. Self/Peer Appraisal (20pts): You will rate your personal participation in your assigned group, as well as reflect on the participation of your group member using the SELF/PEER PARTICIPATION AND APPRAISAL form. Note: The Self/Peer Participation Appraisal form requires thoughtful and detailed analysis of performance and participation of each individual group member (including self). Failure to provide such will result in your grade being reduced in this area for lack of acceptable feedback. Self/peer evaluations will be supplemented by instructor observation and assessment. Class Attendance and Participation (50 pts each) Attendance is through class attendance as documented on class attendance for each period. (See Absences) The class participation is participation in class activities. BONUS POINTS Extra credit/bonus points can be earned through voluntary individual participation in class activities OR during an authorized research project. Other extra credit/bonus opportunities may be offered throughout the semester. Subject to Change Clause This syllabus is subject to change at the discretion of the instructor to accommodate instructional and/or student needs. Students will be informed of changes either verbally or in writing.
