2 Intent Funded by HEB and housed at the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce; the intent of SA Works is to grow and enhance the existing career and technology programs currently in place throughout the community to meet specific high skill workforce needs
3 Mission Modeled after the Private Industry Council (PIC) in Boston MA, the mission of San Antonio Works is to create a best in class industry led experiential learning program to serve students and employers in the city of San Antonio and Bexar County

5 Accomplishments 9,000 annual jobs for high school youth (3,000 with private industry, 6,000 in public jobs) 90 percent of PIC graduates go on to 4-yearcolleges More than 346 employers participate in summer jobs Mayor as champion SA Works

8 Key Functions of SA Works Intermediary: Outreach New accounts Onboarding Logistics Curriculum Development Nonprofit and other communitybased organizations partnering with School to Career programs Workforce Solutions Alamo and P16 Plus Council of Bexar County providing Data and Evaluation City of San Antonio and Bexar County as Champions
9 Goals To create awareness of the multiple career pathways that exist for students in San Antonio To cultivate integrated and long term partnerships between key employers and the multiple school districts as well as institutions of higher learning in the San Antonio area to create programs that help fulfill a specific workforce need or gap; To educate teachers and administrators at all levels on the evolution of career and technical education to serve a diverse student population; To provide meaningful workforce experiences for students that will enhance skill development, and, ultimately, lead to industry recognized certification, preparedness for additional post secondary education, and/or employment in our knowledge based economy; and To reduce the current dropout rate on participating campuses while simultaneously increasing both college readiness and employability for students.
10 Additional Goals Improve and coordinate career advising across K12, higher education, workforce and community-based systems Explore one or more career high schools for career advising and adult education Support teacher and leadership professional development around Project-Based Learning (PBL) Partner with nonprofits expanding existing soft/essential skills programs and support youth while completing internships or other Work-Based Learning (WBL) Develop a regional partnership with Jobs for the Future/Pathways to Prosperity supporting strengthened career pathways and middle skill opportunities in San Antonio
11 San Antonio Works Staff AVP of Talent Development: Liaison to participating businesses and school districts. Oversees recruitment, program design and development Work with businesses to identify areas of critical need and skills gaps Work with school systems to identify meaningful partnerships and enhanced curriculum opportunities Michelle Hendrick, AVP of Curriculum Development: Instructional specialist with deep expertise in STEM education and CTE. Works with each business to develop curriculum specific to meet detailed learning objectives Provide information about CTE opportunities to community members (parents, students, educators) via a website and mobile app.
12 Year 1 Targets for SA Works Establish a coalition of at least 10 major employers who are willing to serve as founding partners Recruit a minimum of 250 students for inaugural SA Works internship class December 2015 deadline Get commitment from partner employers to offer internships for them Lay the groundwork for expanded apprenticeships and university co-ops Long term 20,000 experiential learning opportunities by 2020 (4,000 per year) SA Works! 12

14 Employer s Menu of Options by Grade 7 th and 8 th grade Citywide Career Fair to be held in late January or early February for students and parents awareness of career pathways and industry 9 th grade SA Works Speakers Bureau, Employer representatives giving classroom presentations to students 10 th grade Industry-led Tour Sites or Job Shadows 11 th and 12 th grade High school internships during school time for 6 to 8 weeks and/or summer internship opportunities Technical and Associate s Degree students participate in Apprenticeships 3 days on designated site, 2 days in the classroom 4-year College students in University Internships or Co-ops during the summer or for 6 months at a time Teacher and Counselor Externships focused on project-based learning (PBL) in the summer presenting lesson plan at the end of the experience
